Red Flags Video-5
From"Never Heard of it" to "Got it Early" (Click on image to view)
We are excited to release our Red Flags of Sarcoma Video!  Professionally produced and donated by Paul Sanft and Tori Bahr at IdeaTap Studios, This 3 1/2 minute video is entertaining, poignant and important. View it, Enjoy It, "Like It" and forward it to all your friends, family, and contacts. Be a lifesaver!!  Our thanks to all RIS volunteers who shared their stories and to Zach Sobiech, who donated the music.

Organized by our two sarcoma scholars, Tori Bahr and Jim Stokman, a large group of medical students gathered for our annual lunch lecture on Sarcoma.  Dr. Ogilvie led off the hour with a presentation on sarcoma cancers, what to look for in a medical history and the signs and symptoms of sarcoma.  Dr. Ogilvie made the point that all physicians need to know the most common diseases and the most dangerous diseases.  Sarcoma fits into the most dangerous disease category.

The human side of sarcoma is equally important. Jasmine Baultrippe told of her brother Julian's misdiagnosis and subsequent death from sarcoma both in terms of Jullian's experience as a patient and in terms of the lasting effects on his family.  Julian saw six doctors before he was diagnosed.  Jasmine asked the students present not to be doctors 1-5, but to learn about sarcoma and the benefits of a timely diagnosis.  Jasmine was followed by Ruth Bachman, who gave a humorous and factual account of her diagnosis and treatment including deciding to choose life by having her dominant arm amputated.   Read more...
Auction 2012-4
The 2013 Party in the Park Silent Auction will be our best ever, with your help! Over thirty items already have been donated, with interest throughout the country.

You can help in two great and very important ways:
1) Join our Auction Committee!  We need many people to follow up with past donors and call on new donors to secure wonderful, useful and unique auction items. We also need help with staging, set up and many other activities.  You may share your time before the event or on the night of the Party; you may serve us for a few hours or even more.  Plan now to attend our next Auction Committee meeting, this coming Thursday, April 18th at 7 p.m. at the Perkins Restaurant on France Avenue and I-494 in Bloomington. Please RSVP your attendance to James Gottfried by clicking here or by calling 651-214-2498. Whether or not you can attend, click here for great ideas for securing auction items.

2) Donate A Silent Auction Item.  We need interesting, unique and sought-after items. How about a few days at your lake cabin, a special service, or a fine wine or liqueur?  We need it all!  For a list of auction items ideas, click here. For information on donating, including drop off locations, click here.  Thank you for joining together, to create something very big!
Rein in Sarcoma New Patient Notebook

The RIS Medical Advisory Team, under the leadership of Dr. Christian Ogilvie, is working to revise a new 4th Edition of the RIS Sarcoma Patient Starter Notebook.  They hope to have it published by this July's "Party in the Park."

The Advisory Team is interested to learn by the end of this month how sarcoma patients and loved ones who have used the current Notebook would like to see it changed  the next edition. To learn more and provide them your ideas,

St Thomas
Ruth Bachman & Heather Meeks
Rein in Sarcoma and Ruth Bachman and The Hour Glass Fund Project set a goal last fall to educate young people about the Red Flags of Sarcoma and to provide them with skills and inspiration to live constructively through the narrow spots in their lives.  Heather Meeks and the other Colleges Against Cancer students at St. Thomas University offered to pilot the program at St. Thomas.  The students did a marvelous job of organizing and publicizing the program, which took place on April 11th.

Ruth began her lecture with an activity about identifying your values and then using your core values in facing life's rough spots.  Ruth then spoke of her cancer journey, the signs and symptoms of sarcoma and her trip to Nepal with Above and Beyond Cancer.  Ruth uses an hour glass as a metaphor for life.  Experiencing life is like going through an hourglass: the sand is rearranged, but we all can survive and grow though the inevitable tough times of life.

Everyone left the lecture uplifted and inspired to make pearls out of the rough times, even on a very snowy and dreary April afternoon.  Ruth generously made herself available for this talk and would be willing to talk to other High School and College groups.  If interested, please contact us 651-486-9114 or by email. TCF Stadium
Relay for Life
In the ongoing effort to increase awareness of the Red Flags of Sarcoma, volunteers staffed a table at the Relay for Life event at TCF Bank Stadium on April 5th.  The event was organized by The University's Colleges Against Cancer chapter, a group affiliated with the American Cancer Society.

Despite snow, wind and cold weather, there were 2,258 participants!  We had conversations about sarcoma with many
already touched by cancer in some way and handed out the Red Flags brochure.

Save your Treasures
