Kick-Off Meeting 2102

Kick-Off the Party!  This Tuesday evening, March 12, we'll meet at the U of Minnesota Orthopedic Clinic to begin working towards the Party in the Park.  We have a great crew of team leaders, and many exciting opportunities for you to join.  Free parking vouchers (for the Blue Lot) and refreshments will be available, so come join the fun!  This is fun with a purpose:  hosting our flagship event and helping to raise the funds that will allow the RIS mission to continue.

At 6:30 some of our researchers and doctors will be there to answer your questions and update you about what the money you are working so hard to raise will do for sarcoma research and patient treatment.  We will also have delicious treats and a time to reconnect with old friends.  At 7:00 our meeting will start.  After an introduction to the work RIS has been doing, you'll hear from each team and have the chance to attend small-group working meetings.  Registration is not required, but will help us plan.  To learn more and register, please click here.   If you can't attend, but wish to sign up for the team that interests you, please complete our volunteer form by clicking here.

Saturday March 2, Dean Katie Dusenbery convened the 4th Annual Rein in Sarcoma Mini-Medical School at the University of Minnesota. Thirty students joined researchers, physicians and Sarcoma Dogs to learn about many facets of the war on Sarcoma. It was a fascinating, informative, and exciting day for all of the RIS Class of 2013.

During the morning, we were instructed by an all-star faculty including: Dr. Logan Spector, Dr. Subramanian, Dr. Clohisy, Dr. Largaespada, Dr. Keith Skubitz, Dr. Amy Skubitz, Dr. Amy Skubitz, Dr. Gross, Dr. Modiano and Dr. Borgetti. They covered a wide range of Sarcoma issues including: sarcoma statistics, what to expect from next generation research, new bone cancer treatments, controlling pain, targeted treatments, and a major breakthrough in Giant Cell Tumors research.

It is often said that Dogs are man's best friend. At the mini-medical school we met Charlie, Buddy and Buster who along with their owners and doctors are taking part in research into sarcoma treatments that holds great promise to help both our canine friends and human sarcoma patients. Thanks and Congratulations go out to the 2013 Mud Dog Riders: Pat Bourgeois, Joel Mellenthin, Lynn Keillor, Justin Klett, Jeff Gruhlke, Dan Skallet and Jessie Steinwand for their overwhelmingly successful 235 mile snowmobile ride to Brainerd and the MnUSA Rendezvous to support RIS and keep alive the memory of Eric Skogman. They collected an amazing amount of money from the snowmobiling community.

One very touching moment was recalled by Joel Mellenthin as be passed Eric's snowmobile helmet at the Banquet for the MN Snowmobile 2013 Rendezvous.  Read more...
