I have wonderful news to share regarding the work of the RIS Transition Team!
On Thursday, November 8th, The Karen Wyckoff Rein in Sarcoma Foundation Board of Directors unanimously adopted all of the recommendations proposed by the RIS Transition Team.
Our overall goal in the Transition plan is to sustain and expand the work of The Karen Wyckoff Rein in Sarcoma Foundation in its three mission critical focus areas: education, patient/loved ones support, and research. This also includes doubling research funding to $200,000 annually by 2016!
RIS Transition Team Recommendations:
- Approve the hiring of an Executive Director.
- Approve a transition budget of $50,000 (Set aside in 2013 RIS Budget to serve as 'seed' money for initial transitional expense.)
- Establish the formation of a transition fundraising committee to raise additional funds that support 1st year transition expense.
- Establish the formation of a search/selection committee.
Background:
We formed the RIS Transition Team in June 2011 to review the long term sustainability of Rein in Sarcoma and to bring forth recommendations to the Board. Team members included Tom Dougherty, David Ewald, Sarah Giga, Lisa Griebel, Roby Thompson and Peter Wyckoff.
Our extensive research led us to conclude that...The Karen Wyckoff Rein in Sarcoma Foundation:
- Has made and can continue to make an impact in sarcoma education, patient and loved ones support and fundraising for sarcoma research.
- Has committed stakeholders (patients, survivors, family, doctors, researchers and others) who want KWRISF to continue to expand and grow.
- Has a strong volunteer base with untapped potential capacity.

We need your help!!!
As you noted in the recommendations, we have formed 2 new committees to begin implementing our transition plan. The next 6-8 months are critical to the success of our transition and we need additional help.
If you have fundraising (major gifts or capital campaign) or human resource (search/selection) experience and are willing to donate some of your time over the next few months, we would greatly appreciate it. Please find more information about our immediate needs for these committees:
Transition Fundraising Committee: (For more information, please contact Tom Dougherty)
- Goal: Raise additional funds to support transition plan implementation by June 2013.
- Develop short/long term fundraising strategies to sustain organization.
Pre-Hiring:
- Identify key responsibilities/expectations for Executive Director
- Write job description
- Post job description
- Screen candidates
- Interview candidates
- Make hiring recommendation
Post Hiring:
- Develop on-boarding plan
- Assist with on-boarding of Executive Director
- Review goals/measures of success
