From Michael..
Derby week at Old Friends is almost as exciting as being at Churchill Downs. At Old Friends, we realize that the Derby is the fastest two minutes in sports and all the competitors are three-years-old but their lives go on for many, many more years. In 1988, Clever Allemont was one of the winter book favorites for the Derby. Now, at age 31, he greets busload after busload of visitors who feed him carrots and scratch his back. He's deaf and only has one eye that works but he's extremely smart and extraordinarily gentle. Being at Old Friends is as exciting, for us, as winning the Derby. And, it happens every day.
Special thanks to Kim and Dr. Steve Allday who dedicated their Derby party last night to Old Friends. What a great time. Todd Pletcher, Doug O'Neill, Gary Stevens, Kevin Krigger, Charlie Pigg and dozens of others with Derby connections were among the guests. They raised a lot of money and awareness for Old Friends. On Thursday, we're all looking forward to Ferdinand's Ball at the Muhammed Ali Center in Louisville. Rosie Napravnik, who was the deserving subject of a great profile on "60 Minutes" last night, will receive the Ferdinand Award. She's bringing her whole family. University of Louisville basketball star, Peyton Riva, is the host of the party. All the money raised goes to the horses.
On Saturday, Woodford Reserve will be fixing their very, very special mint juleps at Churchill Downs to benefit Old Friends.
On Sunday, our Homecoming marks the 10th anniversary of Old Friends. It's hard to believe it's been a decade since Narrow Escape became our first retiree at Afton Farm. Nearly 200 retirees later, and a great history that runs through Hurstland Farm and hundreds of supporters and dedicated volunteers, we are in a position to do an even better job at providing dignified retirement for these deserving athletes.

Gallopalooza Ferdinand to Old Friends!

Ferdinand is coming to Old Friends!  The City of Elizabethtown, KY has graciously donated the fiberglass sculpture that was a key attraction of the 2004 Gallopalooza art exhibit in Louisville to the Thoroughbred Retirement Center in Georgetown.

The statue will make a guest appearance at Ferdinand's Ball, the Old Friends Kentucky Derby Benefit taking place May 2nd at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, before taking up permanent residence at the Old Friends farm in Georgetown.

The life-sized depiction of the 1986 Kentucky Derby winner and the 1987 Horse of the Year was handcrafted by artists Lisa Bickford and D'arry Jone Frank. It was purchased at auction by the Elizabethtown Tourism & Convention Bureau, Jim & Helen Fugitte, and the Hardin County Chamber of Commerce following Louisville's 2004 Gallopalooza and he has been welcoming guests at the Tourism & Convention Bureau ever since.

At the request of longtime Old Friends supporter Janet Penick, the owners recently donated the Ferdinand statue. "We have been blessed to house him here at the Tourism Bureau for all our visitors to enjoy. But now is the time for him to have his own stall where horse lovers from all over the world can enjoy him," said Tourism and Convention Bureau Executive Director Sherry Murphy.

"We are overjoyed that Gallopalooza Ferdinand will be permanently retired to Old Friends," said Old Friends president and founder Michael Blowen, who adds that the sculpture will be on display for fans. "We're grateful to the wonderful citizens of Elizabethtown for allowing us to display this magnificent statue."
