From Michael..
Old Friends is nearly ten years old. There's not a day that goes by that I'm not grateful to all of you for allowing me to spend my hours with these amazing athletes. From Gulch to Zippy Chippy and Marquetry to Rapid Redux, we are all honored to be trusted with them in their golden years. There are only three things about the work that's difficult: when we lose one of these spectacular animals, when we don't have room for a very deserving horse and asking for money.

On Breeders' Cup Saturday, an elaborate floral arrangement arrived to commemorate Black Tie Affair's wire-to-wire victory in the Classic. A cascading mixture of lilies and mums in Breeders' Cup purple and gold now sits above his tombstone courtesy of his former caretaker, Dee Poulos.  A few weeks earlier, Lane's End invited us to participate in their Fan Appreciation Day. We distributed our very popular DRF/Old Friends Scene magazine and gave out hats celebrating the Lane's End stallions. Everyone was very complimentary of Old Friends. Buoyed by the wave of support, we have a lot to be thankful for. People who visit often say that these horses are lucky and owe us a lot but it's quite the opposite. I can't believe our luck being able to see them every day and we owe them everything.

Nothing hurts quite so bad as when we're forced to euthanize a Hall-of-Famer like Precisionist or a great friend like Fortunate Prospect or when I have to put off a cash-strapped or ill owner who wants to donate a Thoroughbred and I have to explain that we have no room. That is my failure.

Now, the money part. The good news is that there is land available at discounted prices in the Bluegrass. There are many lease to own options in our neighborhood that would allow us to expand and bring several off-site horses to our central location. That would make more of our retirees accessible to visitors and reduce our cost per retiree.

Our goal is to raise $300,000 before year's end --It's our Best Friends of Old Friends Program. We will install a Friends wall at Old Friends, listing everyone who donated $1,000 or more to this campaign. This will be a permanent monument to those who stepped up at this crucial time. We'll also send out a special Old Friends thank you package in time for Christmas.

Everyone at Old Friends has donated their time and efforts toward making the farm what it is today. We've received verification from the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, so donors can be reassured that the care of the animals is first rate. Our IRS information is on-line so you can see for yourselves that the money we raise is all aimed at providing quality for the athletes.

As I said, we have a lot to be thankful for but, most of all, I'd like to thank all of you for proving that life can be better than any dream.

Old Friends Scene Collectible Magazine

An amazing tribute to our retirees! Featuring Barbara D. Livingston's evocative photographs, supplemented by works by Matt Wooley and Rick Capone. 80 color pages, lifetime pps, Jay Hovdey's column, and the dedication of the entire Daily Racing Form staff make this magazine very, very special. Thanks DRF and special thanks to Barbara Livingston, Mandy Minger, Barbara Fossum and all the wonderful people who made this happen.
