Measure 20-222 on the November 4 election ballot asks voters in our school district whether to renew local funding for schools at the same property tax rate. The 4J local option levy funds school operations, such as teachers, programs and school days.It provides about $8 million per year, paying for the equivalent of about 16 school days or 80 teaching positions. It is not a new tax or a tax increase, but a five-year renewal of the local option levy that has been providing additional local funding for 4J schools since 2000. To vote on the local option levy, 4J residents must be registered to vote by October 14. To learn more,  click here.
River Walk Raised $16,600!!!

The River Walk was a HUGE Success.

Our students, parents and community managed to raise $16,600. We will use these funds to go towards PE equipment, field trips, technology upgrades and supplies.

River Walk participants, walked just under 6 miles from Kelly MS to Maurie Jacobs Park and back. Some students chose to walk an extra three miles as a fitness challenge called the "Cooper Challenge". When we got back all students had a community BBQ lunch staffed by many parent volunteers as well as our lunch staff!

Many thanks to every student, parent, and guardian that worked to raise money for our school.  Every dollar counts, and we greatly appreciate your hard work and generosity. A special shout out goes to the top five money earners in the school: Alexis Matthiesen-Johnson ($274), Robyn Laskaris ($250). Andrew Hoekman ($245), Olivia Frost ($230) and Kinely Jones ($230). The top three class earners were: Mrs. Maddock ($1960), Ms. Young ($1496), Mr. Malcolm ($1372) and Mr. Douma ($1295).

We are grateful to all of you who supported our students in this endeavor. Your efforts will help to ensure a wonderful year at Kelly Middle School. There were many who donated time, money and effort to making the River Walk such a success.

Thank you so much!

Common Core State Standards

You're invited:

K-12 parent information nights about the

Common Core State Standards

What are the Common Core State Standards? How are these new expectations for student learning different from the standards Oregon had in place before? Most of all, what do these changes mean for your student, and for you?

Things are changing in your student's classroom, in homework, and in assessments of his or her learning. Oregon and more than 40 other states across the country have developed and adopted shared academic expectations, called the Common Core State Standards. They are clear, consistent guidelines for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level in math and English language arts in order to be ready to graduate with an Oregon diploma, ready for college, careers and life. It's all to help students develop the knowledge and higher-level thinking skills they need for their future success.

Please join us at a parent information night this month to learn more about Oregon's changing academic standards and how together we can support your student's success in school and beyond. We'll start by sharing information for parents of all ages, then break out to different groups for parents of elementary students and middle to high school students.

Every information night will have the same information and activities for parents, so you can choose whichever time and location works best for you. Spanish interpretation will be provided at each information night. An additional meeting for Spanish-speaking families will be scheduled soon.

Fall Fest Social

On October 31, we will hold our annual Fall Fest Social for students who have behaved in a safe, responsible, leaves and respectful manner during October.  The event runs from 2:35-3:20 p.m. and features a variety of activities designed for students to practice social skills and have fun while promoting positive feelings toward school. Activities may include such things as Bingo, origami, and a dance.

If parents prefer that their child not participate, they may send a written note excusing the child from school at 2:35 p.m. to walk home. Students without a written note will not be allowed to leave school grounds. If a student has permission to leave, he/she MUST leave school grounds, as supervision will not be available during this time.

HALLOWEEN REMINDERS:

We do encourage students to dress up for the occasion if they choose. They are welcome to wear costumes to school, or dress up prior to the FEST event on this day. We ask for your help in helping your student choose an appropriate costume. In addition to the regular dress code and school rules that continue to apply on this day, the following additions are important:
- weapons or weapon-like props are not allowed
- "gang" attire is not allowed.
- masks need to be left at home.

- face paint is permitted

Office Reminders

Excused or Unexcused Absences

Each year, questions arise concerning whether an absence is recorded as excused or unexcused. An absence MAY be excused... if the absence is caused by the pupil's sickness, by the sickness of some member of the pupil's family, or by an emergency. A principal or teacher may also excuse absences for other reasons where satisfactory arrangements are made in advance of the absence." The Kelly staff primarily limits "other reasons" to doctor or dentist appointments that cannot be made outside the school day. Baby-sitting, vacations, and family social events are generally not considered acceptable reasons to miss school.

PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT OREGON TRUANCY LAWS APPLY WHETHER AN ABSENCE IS EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED. As per the law, we will be sending home attendance letters should a student be absent an equivalent of eight half days during a four and half week period. We will also notify parents, via a letter, should irregular attendance patterns persist. We do this as a means of informing parents and to ask for help in ensuring regular and consistent attendance. Call 541-790-4740 EACH Day Your Student Will Be Absent or Tardy.

If we are not notified of your child's absence, the auto dialer will contact you. When the attendance of the student becomes a concern, (whether absences are excused or unexcused) the Assistant Principal or counselor may contact parents about the school's concerns. If the attendance problem continues, the school will be obligated to refer the family to Lane ESD.
If you know in advance that your student will be missing school, please contact Mrs. Marlow, the attendance secretary. The student is responsible for contacting teachers to get work missed due to absence.
