Dear
Happy New Year! I am personally not a fan of resolutions, new year's or otherwise. To me, it's a set up. You state emphatically that you're going to do something, or not do something...then a few days or a few weeks later, you're doing it (or not doing it). Once you've broken your resolution, it's over. Oh well, try again next year. Resolutions are almost always bound to fail because they're aimed at trying to break some of our deepest ingrained habits around such vital issues as food, money, time-management, addictions and such. We don't generally spend a lot of time honing the skills that will help us to achieve these new years goals. We state our resolution, with sincere intentions, and march bravely into the new year. While I've resolved to give up making resolutions on New Years, I enjoy marking the passage into a new year with reflection and ritual. This year, as part of my new year ritual, I wrote a long list of things that I want to invite into my life for 2013. I didn't spend a lot of time on the list, just wrote down the first 30 things that came into my mind. My intention is to tuck that list away and forget about it. Then (if I remember), I intend to pull that list out next new year's and see how many of those things have come to fruition. It will be interesting to see how it turns out. Stay tuned! And, if you're more of a traditional resolution maker, and are determined to stick to your resolutions this year, yoga philosophy can offer this wisdom: It's easier to develop a new healthy habit than it is to leave behind an old unhealthy habit. Rather than trying to change what you don't like, focus on the positive things that you would like to invite into your life this year. You can also try breaking up larger goals into smaller steps and making monthly resolutions that are easier to attain, and give you a sense of accomplishment throughout the year. Whatever your new year rituals are, I hope 2013 brings you health, happiness and lots of positive change. |
