Shura Council thanks everyone who has responded to our call for purchasing Qurans for Muslim inmates across Southern California so far, especially the First United Methodist Church of Los Angeles for donating 4 copies of the Quran. We are grateful to UMC's pastor, Rev. Sandie Richards for her solidarity with us and touched by the generosity of her Church. Shura Council continues to build bridges across faith groups for the common and greater good and is proud to have partnered with UMC in its Unity in Diversity program.

We continue to get requests for Qurans, Islamic educational material, prayer rugs, prayer beads, kufis and hijabs and urge everyone to donate to support our Prison Outreach Program headed by Imam AbdulHafiz

Shura Council applauds the ACLU for successfully securing First Amendment guarantees for freedom of religion for Muslim inmates in an unprecedented federal ruling. We are proud to have served as the religious advisors to the ACLU in this landmark case.

Shura Council also thanks everyone for sharing their ideas about the title for our upcoming confernce on the life and legacy of Prophet Muhammad. We are pleased to announce the title for the March 9th conference is: Muhammad: The Prophet for Our Times. We now invite you to share what you would like to hear discussed at the conference by calling us at (714.239.6473) or emailing us at [email protected].

Shura Council congratulates the Islamic Institute of Orange County (a.k.a. Masjid Omar Al-Farouk) for launching the College of Islamic Studies, offering a two year accredited program in Islamic studies.

THE LEGACY OF DR. KING

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals." ~ Rev.Martin Luther King, Jr.

The nation pays tribute on Monday, Jan. 21st to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a man of deep compassionrestless concern and a stirring spirit calling for the betterment of humanity

More than 40 years since he walked this earth, we should stop and take stock where we are as a nation have we embraced the flood tide of love and struggle that Dr. King urged America to embrace.

The questions are "Where do we go from here?" and "How do we break the silence?" and how "Shall we overcome some day?".
