MAY: At the Shura Council annual banquet, community leaders were recognized. Imam Abdul Karim Hasan of Bilal Islamic Center received the Lifetime Service Award; Sr. Khadija Galedary of the Los Angeles Latino Muslim Association (LALMA) received the Outreach Award and ACLU-Southern California, received the Justice Award.
A federal court struck down part of National Defense Authorization Act, a controversial law signed by President Obama that gave the government unprecedented power to indefinitely detain anyone and anywhere in the world without charge or trial.
JUNE: 45 young SoCal Muslims were honored with scholarships while Muslims in New Jersey sued NYPD to protect their constitutional rights. The once invincible Egyptian is jailed.
JULY: The Islamic Center of Irvine announced the appointment of Imam Jamaal Diwan as their new resident scholar. The City of Anaheim experienced a massive uprising after two of its citizens were shot dead in two days by the Anaheim police. A leading magazine dedicated its entire issue in examining the malaise of Islamophobia in the United States. Religious Congregations and Membership Study releases its U.S. Religion Census report. AUGUST: In partnership with ACLU, Shura Council forced LA County Jails to change its policy and provide halal-meals for the Muslim inmates. Shura Council's former justice award recipient, Imane Boundlal sued Disneyland for her right to wear Hijab. A suspicious fire burned down a Mosque in Joplin, Missouri and Shura Council announced a $10,000 contribution for their rebuilding fund on behalf of Muslims in Southern California. SEPTEMBER: Shura Council announced its Prison Outreach Program and the appointment of Imam Abdul Hafiz as its Director. Shura Council received an award from the Orange County Labor Federation for its commitment toward the 'working poor' in America. OCTOBER: For the first time ever, a joint Eid al Adha prayer was held at the Angels Stadium. ICNA Relief inaugurated its Women's Shelter and the Islamic Society of Orange County inaugurated its food pantry. Shura Council welcomed the Islamic Society of Simi Valley as its new member. The Islamic Center of Temecula Valley started construction of its new center after months of controversy. SoCal Mosques opened its doors to celebrate the 11th Annual Open Mosque Day. NOVEMBER: Masjid Omar Farouk announced the appointment of Imam Mustafa Umar to its staff. The Chairman of the Islamic Shura Council, Dr. Muzammil Siddiqi is voted as the best holy person of Orange County. The student government of UCI unanimously passed a resolution demanding UCI to divest from all companies that profit from apartheid in Israel.
DECEMBER: Shura Council issued its 2012 report. Shura Council announced the Sandy Hook Children's Scholarship Fund. The United Nations General Assembly granted non-member observer State status to Palestine. We thank Allah and thank you for your continued support and we look forward working with you in 2013.
