Mind in the Making and Empowering Families

R2LP staffers meet with their 'executive function rock star'

On March 12, after giving the keynote presentation at the Parenting Matters Conference, Ellen Galinsky, author of Mind in the Making, came to Ready to Learn Providence to talk with the staff and AmeriCorps members who have been delivering her program to families and educators in Providence.

Ellen captured what they had to say about the profound impact Mind in the Making has had on participants of the eight-session course -- and on themselves as facilitators -- in the video above.

Ellen got a rock-star welcome at R2LP.
In a four-year program, in partnership with the Providence Public Schools, Ready to Learn is offering Mind in the Making to families of children in Pre-kindergarten to Grade 3 and to school personnel who interact with those children. (To date, more than 1,400 have completed the program.) Ellen created the MITM modules with her team at the Families and Work Institute.

"What I love about Mind in the Making is that it brings scientific research to participants in a palatable and meaningful way," Tania Quezada, who oversees the project for Ready to Learn, told Ellen. "We're not showing data with lots of bars and lines; we're presenting this material in a way that really connects with people. Mind in the Making gives participants something they can see, reflect on, analyze and actually implement."

L-r: Leslie, Gady, Chris and Maria at the Carl Lauro School  before heading to the Teaching and Learning Conference in D.C.
The day before Ellen came to Rhode Island, R2LP Director Leslie Gell joined her in Washington D.C. for a presentation at the annual Teaching and Learning Conference. Accompanying Leslie were Gady Inirio, a Providence parent of a 3- and a 5-year-old; Chris Kennedy, principal of Providence's Carl Lauro Elementary School; and Maria Renee Vargas, a first grade bilingual teacher there. They participated on a panel to discuss what Mind in the Making has meant to families, schools and educators in the city.

Gady, who currently serves as an R2LP AmeriCorps member, completed Mind in the Making last year. She told Ellen she credits Vroom, a project of the Bezos Foundation, with keeping the principles she learned in Mind in the Making alive and well in her home. Vroom gives parents tips every day, through an app on their phone or on its website, for simple activities that promote the executive function skills covered in the course.

Join our 12th team

Since our first team (at right) joined us in 2005, Ready to Learn Providence AmeriCorps members have served close to 550,000 hours improving the well-being of young children in or near Providence.

If you enjoy working with children and their families, take a look at the kind of instrumental work our members do in the community to help us ensure that all young children will be healthy and ready to learn. Our alums often tell us that serving in our AmeriCorps program was a life-changing experience.

To learn more about the program, come to an Information Session, to be held in English and Spanish, on April 9. Applications for new and returning members can also be found on that page.
