The seven skills all children need
 |
We're currently offering the new MITM course to our AmeriCorps members.
|
What are the seven essential skills that separate students who reach their full potential from those who always struggle in school?
A new Mind in the Making (MITM) course developed by the Families and Work Institute explains what these skills are, why they matter, and how we can encourage them in children. We've partnered with the Providence Schools to offer this eight-session course in multiple locations to families, educators and other school personnel, as well as to members of the surrounding community who interact with children. The courses will be offered in both English and Spanish.

New Pre-K classroom under way
 |
L-r: Yesicca, Jennifer and Heather
|
The new Pre-K classroom we're operating with (and at) Heritage Park Early Learning Center officially got under way this week with the arrival of the 18 Pawtucket children who were selected by a lottery administered by the R.I. Department of Education. Staffing the new classroom is Heather Webster, teacher, Jennifer Cunningham, assistant teacher, and Yesicca Cranshaw, the R2LP AmeriCorps member assigned to the program. We know there's an exciting year ahead for them, and of course for the veteran staff at our Pre-K classroom in Providence at CCRI -- Victoria Botelho, teacher, and Kerry Roderick, assistant teacher. Dioni Cruz is the AmeriCorps member assigned there. The two Pre-K classrooms are part of the state-funded Pre-kindergarten Project.

AmeriCorps members get warm welcome at Providence City Hall
 |
AmeriCorps member Cecilia Benitez and Mayor Angel Taveras
|
"Thank you so much for your service to the community," Providence Mayor Angel Taveras told our 33 AmeriCorps members when they visited City Hall in August. "We're lucky to have you."
Members got a tour of the beautiful building and then enjoyed a lengthy visit with the mayor in his office. See pictures from that visit here.On September 3, after three weeks of training at Ready to Learn, members headed to their assigned sites in the field -- early-care settings, libraries, WIC offices and pediatric clinics. A few will work at R2LP to assist in our professional development programs. And this year we've launched a new initiative with the Central Falls School Department in which four members will assist in family engagement projects.

T.E.A.C.H. scholar achieves dreams
When Shirley Chang was 19 and a recent emigrant from China, she spoke no English and worked in a car wash. But she had two dreams -- to work with young children and to earn a college degree.
She achieved her first dream some 18 years ago when she opened her first home child-care business in California. Her current program in Cumberland, R.I., has a four-star rating from BrightStars.
Now, thanks in part to a T.E.A.C.H. scholarship, Shirley is well on her way to achieving her second dream.
