R2LP to participate in two pre-kindergarten classrooms

This year Ready to Learn will be participating in two of the 13 classrooms in the state's Pre-kindergarten Project. If you live in one of the seven communities where these classrooms are located, it's a great opportunity for you and your child.

The Pre-K Project, administered and funded by the RI Department of Education, is designed to show the impact of high-quality early childhood education on a child's future academic career. There is no cost to families for this program, which runs from mid-September to mid-June, and all families are encouraged to apply. Children are selected by lottery.

Children must turn 4 by September 1, and must live in the city or town where the site is located. If your child lives in a community with multiple Pre-K classrooms, you can apply at more than one site.

In addition to operating its Pre-K Classroom at CCRI on the Liston Campus, Ready to Learn will partner this year with the Heritage Park YMCA Early Learning Center (Pawtucket) in a Pre-K classroom to be located there.

The application deadline for the lottery is August 15.

For more details, a full list of Pre-K sites, and applications in English and Spanish, please click here. (Social media buttons on the bottom of that page will let you spread the news with your friends on Facebook and Twitter.) Applications are also available at the Pre-K sites, and at the Ready to Learn offices.

End-of-year celebrations filled our June calendar

On June 26 we celebrated all the learning that took place this year in the Pre-kindergarten Classroom. See more photos here.
It's always hard to say farewell, but it's  exciting to imagine what lies ahead for our Pre-K kids, AmeriCorps members, and the passionate educators we work with in our professional development programs. We wish all of them the best of luck in their future endeavors.

Educators in our third Early Reading First program celebrated their accomplishments at a dinner held on June 21. See more photos here.

In June, our decade-long involvement with Early Reading First came to a close. Since 2004 we have administered three ERF grants, working intensively with 15 different centers in Providence, Pawtucket and Central Falls. The federal government discontinued its ERF initiative after awarding grants in 2009.

On June 27, R2LP staff, site supervisors and family members gathered to recognize the work of the 32 AmeriCorps members who completed their year of service. Ten will be returning in August for a second, third or ever fourth year. See more photos here.
