Dear AmeriCorps Team,
What a beautiful spring we are having! The service year is wrapping up quickly and I know everyone is busily planning for the future. However, there is still time to have one of your stories featured in the newsletter. It could be an inspiring moment at your site or a funny anecdote from home. This newsletter is a forum through which to share that personal and professional news with your teammates. (We also want to hear from alums.) So please email r2lpstories@gmail.com with anything you would like to share, along with any relevant photos. We look forward to hearing from you!
¡Qué hermosa primavera la que estamos teniendo! El año de servicios está terminando rápidamente y sé que todo el mundo está ocupado planeando su futuro. Kristin Read Reflects
As we approach the end of our service term, the team's AmeriCorps director, Kristin Read, took time to sit and discuss how the year is going, what she hopes to accomplish in the remaining time, and plans for the upcoming year.
Kristin joined the Ready to Learn Providence team in August 2012, along with the incoming AmeriCorps members. Recalling the days of pre-service training fondly, Kristin states, "Everyone was so excited to start the year and find out which team they were on and where they would work. And then we were off and running. I don't think I stopped to breathe until Thanksgiving."
Kristin's enthusiasm for the work of the AmeriCorps team is contagious. And given her leadership skills it is no surprise that she has extensive experience with the AmeriCorps, both as a VISTA member at Roger Williams University and as a former director for Rhode Island Campus Compact (RICC).
As far as her hopes for the rest of the year? Kristin is as ambitious as ever, hoping that current members push themselves to take the "next-great-step." She is being incredibly supportive as current members pursue other opportunities and placements, but is also excited by the number of returning member applications. She does have a personal goal for the remaining time: "I need to find a Spanish class so that I can improve my Spanglish."
Looking forward to the next service year is exciting for this motivated director. While she plans on keeping much of the program the same, she is also excited about building on the skills of returning members and expanding leadership roles and opportunities. She is quick to acknowledge the important teamwork that is essential to Ready to Learn, saying, "I am amazingly lucky to work with Magda and she has been a good guide. It has been easy for me to slide into the established systems and culture." This great combination of established systems and new skills has led to an exciting year for the AmeriCorps team at Ready to Learn and it looks like next year will be no different.

The Bloomberg Mayor's Challenge
One of our own, Shirly Castellanos, had the opportunity to participate in Providence Talks on the Huffington Post, when Providence was one of the 20 finalists for the Bloomberg Challenge, a competition to generate innovative ideas that will improve city life.
Ulimately, Providence won the Bloomberg Mayor's Challenge. The city's proposal addresses the vocabulary gap that exists between low-income and more affluent children. In the clip below Shirly addresses one element of the Mayor's proposal, specifically technology that would help track the developing vocabulary in children.

AmeriCorps Graduation
The 2012-2013 service year is wrapping up and with it the graduation celebration has been scheduled! Save the date for June 27th from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm. The ceremony will be held in the Blue Cross & Blue Shield Building at 500 Exchange Street, Providence.

Kristin Read Refleja

El Desafío del Alcalde Bloomberg
Uno de los nuestros, Castellanos Shirly, tuvieron la oportunidad de participar en las conversaciones de Providence en el Huffington Post,cuando la Providencia fue uno de los 20 finalistas del Desafío de Bloomberg, un concurso para generar ideas innovadoras que mejoren la vida de la ciudad.
