Important Testing Information!
|
Last year, the LFHS community successfully implemented the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) examination. This year, we are pleased to share some improvements to this assessment. The 2016 exam has a simpler format to improve the testing process. Also, this year's results will allow you to see how your child is growing in his or her knowledge and understanding of the state's learning standards that are focused on college and career readiness.
Based on valuable feedback from students, parents and educators, several changes have been made to the test administration, ensuring that our students will be positioned for maximum success with minimum disruption from usual routines:
- Testing days have been reduced from
seven to two - Testing windows have been reduced from
two to one - Total test time has been reduced by 60-90 minutes
- Tests will be embedded in the regular school day
The first part of the PARCC exam will only be administered to students enrolled in Algebra I on April 12. This is a regular day of attendance for all LFHS students. On this day, approximately 110 students will be taking the Algebra exam. Again, this will be during the regular school day. If your student is not enrolled in Algebra I, your student will not participate in the assessment.
The second part of the PARCC exam will be administered to freshmen enrolled in English I on April 19. This will be a regular day of attendance for all freshmen taking the PARCC exam and juniors who will be taking the ACT at the same time. Buses will run as usual in the morning on April 19 and students are expected to be at school and in their classrooms by 7:50 am. The afternoon bus run will leave school at approximately 1:00 pm.
LFHS sophomores and seniors will not have school on April 19.

Austin Scott's 7th period Chicago Writer's class recently completed a compilation of short, anecdotal stories about Lake Forest and Lake Bluff that are meant to encapsulate the town and what it stands for-both its "tremendous virtues and blemishing vices"-as they so aptly put it. In the book "Here's to You," students pay homage to their hometown by way of its people, places, events, rumors, ideas, expectations, and stereotypes that have helped shape them in the formative years of their lives. Subjects include the Artesian Park in Lake Bluff, the Lake Forest and Lake Bluff Beaches, Noble Ave., the Lake Bluff Recreational Center and many others, which includes a few special, heartfelt tributes to a few of LFHS' own: Mr. Dan Coad, Mr. Larry Lilja, Mr. Joe DeRosa, Ms. Marilyn Obiala, Coach Denise Murphy, Ms. Cindy Dell, and Ms. Meaghan Laughlin. Read the stories in "Here's to You"

Support Academic Excellence at LFHS - Join The Foundation Board
The LFHS Foundation is an all-volunteer organization that helps bridge the gap between tax dollars received by the district and the cost of providing a high-quality education in the 21st century. Students and teachers look to our resources to provide cutting-edge technology, best-in-class teaching methods, and classroom enhancements that would not otherwise be possible. Since 2002 the Foundation has awarded more than $1,600,000 in academic grants. Thanks to the generosity of our families, alumni, friends, and businesses, more than 150 grants have been awarded over the past twelve years- and every student, in every grade, at every learning level has benefited. Virtually every dollar raised goes directly back into the school to support academics.
We are recruiting new board members for the 2016-17 school year. If you are interested in learning more and joining our board, please contact Martha Zeeman at [email protected]. |

WHAT: Marketing the Moon, Lecture by Richard Jurek, with Captain Lovell
WHEN: Thursday, May 5th 7:00 pm
WHERE: Lake Forest High School, Raymond Moore Auditorium, Lake Forest, IL
COST: $25 members; $40 non-members, free to students with ID
The Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society presents Marketing the Moon with Captain Lovell. The program features a presentation by author Richard Jurek about NASA's efforts to nurture public support of the space program. Following the presentation, Captain James Lovell will join Mr. Jurek to share his personal experiences as a NASA astronaut.
The event takes place May 5th at 7:00 pm at Lake Forest High School. Tickets are $25 for members, $40 for non-members, students free with ID. Tickets are available at 847-234-5253 or at www.lflbhistory.org. This event was generously underwritten by Lake Forest Bank & Trust Company.
Primed by science fiction, magazine articles, and TV appearances, Americans were a receptive audience for NASA's pioneering "brand journalism." Author Richard Jurek will tell the story of the sophisticated efforts by NASA to market the idea of space travel-through press releases, bylined articles, product placement (Tang!) and radio and television features. American astronauts, who signed exclusive agreements with Life magazine, became the heroic and patriotic faces of the program.
Captain Lovell piloted Gemini 7, commanded Gemini 12, orbited the moon on Apollo 8, and commanded Apollo 13. Advance reservations requested. Call 847.234.5253 or www.lflbhistory.org.
