finals 1st Semester Exam Schedule for January 2016

LFHS Students Learn About Clean Jobs Bill

State Representative Scott Drury (D-Highwood) of the 58th District joined representatives of the Sierra Club and the Illinois Environmental Council to examine the Clean Jobs Bill currently under consideration in the Illinois General Assembly. After learning about the bill, students participated in a mock committee hearing where a number of perspectives on the bill were shared.

Drury had been invited to speak by Stephen Dunn and Mary Beth Nawor who are currently teaching a new interdisciplinary course blending AP United States Government and Politics and AP Environmental Science. Students will next be visiting the Lake County Republican Federation located in Libertyville.

Congratulations to Tessa Kerouac, sophomore, on winning the Illinois Tollway 2016 Map Cover Contest!

Students from across Illinois were asked to create a design for next year's map that centered around the theme "Save the Monarchs." In addition to being a captivating design, Tessa's artwork educates the viewer with facts about the dwindling monarch population, their role as pollinators and monarchs' habitats. She did the project as an assignment in her Graphic Design 2 class.

In total, over 75 students submitted designs statewide.  That pool was narrowed down to the top ten by the Illinois Tollway.  The top ten designs were then put to public vote on the Tollway's website where the top four emerged as finalists.  These were again judged and Tessa's emerged as the winner.  Tessa won a $400 gift certificate to Blick Art, $200 in gift certificates to Oasis restaurants across Illinois and her design will be featured on the cover of the 2016 Illinois map, available at all Illinois Tollway Oases.

Student Council
Recently, LFHS Student Council partnered with First Methodist Church in Waukegan to serve a warm meal to those who attended. Student Council provided 100 goodie bags filled with a pair of winter socks, chap stick, Kleenex, hand sanitizer, 2 sets of hand warmers, fruit, crackers, apple sauce, granola bars, chocolate, and a water bottle to each person who came. The student council used some of the money raised from Homecoming to provide these donations. The night was filled with smiles, storytelling, laughs and a whole lot of gratitude and love. The Student Council plans do this again in the future.

The woodcraft club is ready
to begin production of
wooden toys that will be donated to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation later this year; and everyone is invited to help.

Talents... if woodworking is your thing then this is a great way to make a difference in someone's life.

Treasure... if you would like to support our efforts financially, please contact Mr. Todd Johnson to see how you can help. [email protected]

Production began November 11, in the Woods Lab and will continue through early December. Stop in anytime Wednesdays & Thursdays before or after school 6:30-7:30am & 3:30-4:30pm.  See what we are building!

LFHS Foundation Grant Provides Supplies for New Robotics Course

Last year the LFHS Foundation awarded 11 academic grants, totaling more than $170,000, including a grant for all of the start-up kits and robot supplies needed to support a new Robotics course. Interest in offering a Robotics class was heightened after last year's successful launch of the Robotics Club (which the LFHS Foundation also supported the prior year with a grant). This new course provides a unique STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) learning opportunity and will allow more LFHS students to gain experience in this growing field. The school's Robotics Club will also use the robotics kits.

The new Robotics course is a great example of the Foundation partnering with the school on a new academic initiative. Please support efforts like this at LFHS and help us create more learning opportunities for our students. Simply click here to make a tax-deductible donation to the LFHS Foundation. Every dollar makes a difference!
