Last spring the LFHS Foundation awarded 10 academic grants, totaling more than $150,000, including a grant for all of the equipment and supplies needed to create a Robotics Club. Currently there are 20 students, comprising two teams, who are in the early stages of constructing robots to compete in the FIRST robotics FTC competition in November in Highland Park. LFHS will host the second competition on December 18 and the Robotics Club hopes to qualify for regional and national competitions this spring. "We're really excited to give students the opportunity to not only design, build and program robots but also to develop their problem-solving, organizational and team-building skills," said Todd Johnson, the Robotics Club advisor. Please support academics at LFHS and help us create opportunities like the Robotics Club for our students. Simply click here to make a tax-deductible donation to the Foundation. Every dollar makes a difference! Anyone interested in joining the Robotics Club should contact Mr. Johnson or Mr. Wilen.

NEXT MEETINGDads Club has been meeting one Saturday morning per month during the school year for more than 20 years. We provide a forum for LFHS dads to share information and ideas about guiding our children through LFHS and into adulthood. We meet at 8:30 a.m. in the Wedge Café, located in the northeast corner of the Commons. Our meetings are casual and conversational, and all LFHS dads are welcome.
The focus of our October and November discussions will be college admissions. We will discuss using the Naviance database, strategies your child can use to prepare for the ACT, and the keys (beyond what we all think) to your child gaining admission to his or her preferred college.
Saturday, October 18, 8:30 a.m. We will talk with LFHS Counselor Robert Wagemann about college admission strategies, and Robert will provide an overview of the Naviance college database available through the LFHS website. We will also talk with George Alpogianis, owner of Huntington Learning Center in Highland Park, about long- and short-term ACT/SAT preparation strategies, including the curriculum choices that will help your child to excel. Saturday, November 15, 8:30 a.m.Mike Moyer, co-founder of Cappex.com, wrote "How to Make Colleges Want You" and "College Peas." He teaches entrepreneurship at the University of Chicago and Northwestern University and is a coach for the Lake Forest High School Entrepreneurship program. Mike will talk with us about what goes on behind the scenes in college admissions departments. He will explain why college admissions officers think that "better" is boring and why students who differentiate themselves from their peer group improve their odds of admission. More Info
