For students who take the Route 86 bus to M-A

If you arrive to school on Sam Trans Bus Route 86, please note that next week, beginning on Tuesday, September 6, the bus will pick up students on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 7:42 am. This is 10 minutes earlier than the current schedule.  We appreciate your attention to this.
  To Parents of Freshmen

All freshmen will participate in Challenge Day on one of three days, Oct. 10, 11 or 12. The organizers recognize that Yom Kippur falls during Challenge Day activities, but given the Challenge Day Organization's availability and the constraints of the school Calendar, these three days were the best option. If your child will be observing Yom Kippur on Oct. 12, please email their Life Skills teacher as soon as possible to let them know, or email Karl Losekoot at klosekoot@seq.org and we will schedule your student for one of the other days. We will work to accommodate students so that they all can participate.
  MathContestM-A Math Contests

School-wide math contests are held on seven different Tuesday's throughout the year during lunch. These contests are part of a state contest called the California Math League. Hundreds of high schools throughout the state participate, both at a state and county level.

There is a multitude of benefits for participating students. From their viewpoint, the most obvious is that they receive extra credit in their respective math classes. Another benefit is that many students are challenged and enjoy competing with their peers. Each year we have approximately twenty winners in different categories. These students receive trophies and get to add this award to their college application resume. Beyond the extra credit, awards, and the spirit of competition, there is a very practical benefit of contests--they give students an opportunity to engage in independent thinking that cuts across the math curriculum. We believe that students who participate in many math contests over their high school career become more skilled at taking standardized tests, in particular the SAT's, the math subject tests and their AP math exams.

This year, the contests are scheduled for September 13, October 18, November 15, December 13, January 17, February 14 and March 14. We would like you to encourage your son or daughter to participate. Send questions to Gregg Whitnah, math contest manager, at gwhitnah@seq.org.
  Fall SAT/PSAT Classes

M-A is offering morning and afternoon PSAT/SAT review classes this fall. Classes will begin on Monday, September 12 and will prepare students for the November 4 SAT exam and the October 19 PSAT exam. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, September 7. More information can be found at mabears/SAT. To be added to our email list click here

To enroll, download the paper application at mabears/SAT and submit it with your donation to Mr. Whitnah in Room D20 or Ms. Payne in Room D21. Questions to gwhitnah@seq.org.
SeniorInfoNight College & Career Center

For parents of seniors only, you are invited and encouraged to attend Senior Parent College Night on Tuesday, September 6 at 6 pm at the PAC Cafeteria (simultaneous Spanish interpretation available). This will be an opportunity to learn what lies ahead this year in the college application process for your students. Senior parents are also encouraged to attend Financial Aid Night with your student on Tuesday, September 27 at 6 pm in the PAC Cafeteria (in English) or the M-A Library (in Spanish). A financial aid expert will explain the financial aid process and answer questions you may have.

 Girls Varsity Water Polo
On Friday and Saturday, the Varsity girls competed in the St. Francis Tournament. After a challenging first day on Friday with losses to SHP and Castilleja, the team finished strong on Saturday with a 14-5 win of Burlingame and a 4-2 win over Paly. As such, the team went 2-2 on the weekend. Maddie Maxwell led the scoring this weekend with 5 goals and Lauren McGinnis rounded out Saturday with 13 saves across the final two games. The Varsity girls begin league play on Wednesday against Mercy at Hillsdale HS at 6 pm.

 Boys Varsity Water Polo
The M-A boys opened their season by splitting 4 games and finishing 4th in the 8-team John Schmitt tournament at Bellarmine. The Bears opened the season with a thrilling, sudden death overtime victory over St. Mary's. Do-everything star Nik Caryotakis fired in his 6th goal of the game from 7 meters to seal the victory. Noah Smith was especially outstanding in the goal down the stretch, repeatedly turning away close-range shots to frustrate St. Mary's. M-A won its second game Friday 7-6 against Clovis in another nail-biter. On Saturday, the Bears fought hard against two experienced, physical teams, losing to Granite Bay 6-2 and to Buchanan 7-3. Tournament highlights included Smith's stalwart play in the goal (34 saves, including a handful of spectacular ones), Caryotakis's all-around dominance (12 goals, 2 assists, 12 steals and lock-down defense), heady play from Chris Lobdell (4 goals, 3 assists, 15 steals), and contributions from Hugo McMillan (2 goals, 3 assists, 5 steals), Henry Marks (4 steals), Ilea Dzotsenidze (3 goals, 2 steals), and Andy Maxwell (2 blocks, 1 steal).

 Girls Varsity Volleyball
They're back! The 2015 PAL, CCS, and NorCal champs came out strong in pre-season play against some of the state's best teams. The season kick-off against local rival Menlo was a rousing five-set battle, with the Bears sealing the win in a crushing final set: 22-25, 26-24, 25-18, 26-28, 15-2. The victory was highlighted by record-setting performances from Kirby Knapp (57 assists, 6 digs, 2 kills and 1 ace) and Jacqueline DiSanto (28 kills, 16 digs and 3 aces). Kiana Sales stepped up with 16 digs, 7 kills, and an ace. Eliza Grover racked up 13 kills, 7 digs and a block. Eternal Freshman Lauren Heller was the ace queen with 4 unanswerable serves to go with her 7 digs and 2 kills. Sophomore Alicia Letvin made her varsity debut in stellar fashion, leading on blocks, and adding 6 kills and an ace. Libero Chloe Johnson put in 2 aces and 6 digs, and True Freshman Marit Hoyem had 2 fabulous kills.

The girls gave SF behemoth Saint Ignatius a big-time run for their money, finishing at 25-18, 17-25, 22-25, 25-16, 12-15. DiSanto stunned with 20 kills, 15 digs and an ace, and Knapp inspired with 48 assists, 9 digs and an ace. Grover had 14 kills, 11 digs, 2.5 blocks, and an ace. Sales came in with 21 digs and 8 kills, while Letvin tallied 4.5 blocks, 6 kills and 2 digs. Johnson served a stinger ace to go with her 9 digs, Heller had 4 digs and 3 kills, and Hoyem registered 3 kills, 2 digs, and a block. Elise Carlomagno wins the "ready" award for coming off the bench late in the match to deliver a string of power serves and run the court for 7 save-the-point digs.

Speaking of behemoths, on Saturday morning Southern California private-school powerhouse Mater Dei came to flaunt their well-honed talents. Yes, they won. Whatever. Let's just say they got a face full of Bear in the process. M-A took the first set 25-20 and then ran the Mater Dei ladies ragged for the rest of the match, finishing 25-20, 25-27, 22-25, 21-25. Kills: DiSanto (16), Grover (14), Sales (7), Hoyem (6), Heller (5); Digs: DiSanto (27), Sales (20), Knapp (17), Carlomagno (11), Johnson (10); Assists: DiSanto (28), Knapp (23); Johnson (3); Blocks: Grover (5), Hoyem (1). Come out and cheer against Valley Christian at home on Tuesday night!

Girls JV Volleyball
First off, a big welcome to our new JV coach, Jackie Harper! Under her leadership, the JV squad came out strong in two tough pre-season matches, dazzling the fans with smart play and fluid choreography, and pushing both Menlo and Saint Ignatius to 3 sets. In Tuesday's opener against Menlo, Kathryn Jones and Natalie Grover were the kill leaders with 5 each, Sawyer Jones and Mariah Grover each put down 3, and Bella Shermis, Gabby Rubio, Lauren Vontz, and Sarah Lehman added one each. Rubio led both on aces (4) and digs (21), while Shermis served 2 aces and popped up 15 digs. Lila Roginski aced 3 and had 6 digs. Hannah Roitman and Sarah Lehman skillfully shared the setting, and Vontz put up a stifling block. The nail-biter match ended at 25-22, 19-25, 14-16.

The tension was equally high in Thursday's match against SF sports powerhouse Saint Ignatius. Roitman and Lehman managed the offense and Shermis was on fire with 5 kills, 2 aces, and 11 digs. Back-row star Roginski had 22 digs. Courtney Castagna came in strong with 2 aces, 2 kills and 5 digs. Vontz and Kathryn Jones put up some beautiful blocks to complement their 3 kills each. Rubio added to the dig count, as did Mariah Grover and Olivia Lang, who also had 2 kills each. Final score: 25-20, 22-25, 4-15.

Girls Freshman Volleyball
The Freshman squad kicked off the season hosting pre-season matches against Menlo and Saint Ignatius. The team came out strong against Menlo, winning handily in both sets and showing the M-A fans they have an exciting season of volleyball ahead.

In Tuesday's opener against Menlo, Becca Henig was the kill leader with a total of 4, Makayla Gage, Alisa Turner, Katherine Armer, Mia Nelson and Soleil Zelaya putting down one each. Macey Rawlinson led on aces (6), with Henig serving up 5 and Gage 3. Gage also set up the team with 8 solid assists alongside teammate Ava Romero with one. Alisa Turner turned in 4 strong digs along with 2 from Armer; Gage, Nelson, Zelaya, Lindsay Atkinson, Kylie Wong and Shreya Aroroa each adding one. A healthy lead was maintained through the entire match with the final score: 25-14, 25-9.

The match against SF sports powerhouse Saint Ignatius on Thursday was tougher. Armer and Henig led the kill count with 3 and 2 respectively, with Gage and Zelaya adding to the count with one each. Rawlinson supported the kill count with 7 assists. Marissa Silva came through with a key block, lifting the team during a tough point in the first set. Impressive digs by Arora (5), Rawlinson (3), Gage (3), Silva (2) with Armer and Romero showing one each. The team showed passion and M-A spirit throughout the match, but could not overpower Saint Ignatius in the end. Final score: 12-25, 10-25.

Varsity Football

In another early season preview of great things to come, the Bears hosted Marin Catholic and played a game that was not decided until the final minutes. Aajon Johnson again led the offense with almost 300 yards of total offense, including a TD run of 40 yards, four completions to Tate "Double T" Tussing with a TD of 45 yards, and three completions each to Aaron Johnson (TD) and Mekhi Blackmon (also an interception). The offensive explosion continued as Marquise Reid willed his way to 87 yards, and with Jordan Mims running, returning, and catching passes for 184 all purpose yards, including a stellar 25 yard run that left Marin defenders picking up various pieces of their uniforms that he had faked them out of. The defense was led by a powerful effort by Stavros "PapaD" Papadokolous with 8 tackles including two sacks and a caused fumble. Other great solo tackle efforts were JP Gray 7, Kevin Jaggers 6, and Christian "ForTheWin" Wiseman and Epeli Mataele pounding of 5 each.

Special teams continued their great play with Michael Pariseau punting M-A out of trouble several times, Spencer Corona kicking two touchbacks, a PAT and an onside kick which was nullified, and excellent kick return blocking by the special teamers. M-A was again let down by turnovers in a game they probably should have won, with a final score of Marin Catholic 31- M-A 25. Next up, Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep, Kezar Stadium, at 7 pm on Fri Sept 9.

 JV Football
The JV Football team played its first home game of the season against Marin Catholic High School in a non-league Saturday afternoon game. The defense set the tone early in the 1st quarter with a forced fumble which was recovered by Feliti Malupo and an interception by Simon Pintz. The first quarter ended at 0-0. The Bears offense, lead by Quarterback Molupo, went on the scoreboard first early in the 2nd quarter after a blocked punt by Kiuola Teu and recovery by Jack Hanson. This set up a 1st and goal quarterback keeper touchdown (2 pt conversion good). The first half ended tied 8-8 after a Marin Catholic touchdown and conversion midway through the 2nd quarter. Marin Catholic came back in the third quarter with a field goal, MA safety, and run for a touchdown (2 pt conversion stopped). The 3rd quarter ended with the Bears behind 19 to 8. Despite being down by nearly 2 touchdowns going into the 4th quarter, the Bears kept their heads in the game and rallied thanks to the great coaching from Coach Karis's staff and cheering by the home crowd. The Bears entire defense swarmed Marin Catholic holding them to nearly no offensive gains. Malupo started the comeback early in the 4th quarter with a 59 yard pass and run to Joey Olshausen for a touchdown (19-14). The defense pressed hard and Seamus Robinson came up with an interception on the Bears 33 yard line. The Bears marched down the field setting up a 20 yard TD run by Daniel Heimuli (19-22) giving the Bears the lead. The defense continued to hold and sack Marin Catholic which was forced to punt setting up another offensive drive which ended in a 20 yard touchdown run by Malupo. The final score was Marin Catholic 19, M-A 28.

The JV team travels up to San Francisco and plays at Kezar Stadium on Friday September 9 at 4 pm versus non-league football power house Sacred Heart Cathedral

Freshman Football
The freshman football team opened the season by beating the Marin Catholic Wildcats by a score of 52-0 at M-A. The Bears dominated the game from the start both offensively and defensively. On the third play of the game, the Bears recovered a fumble after sacking the Wildcat QB. On the Bears's first offensive play of the year, Tyreke Jackson took a handoff and turned it into a 30 yard touchdown run. MA scored next on a 40 yard punt return by Justin Anderson. On the last play of the 1st Quarter, Jackson Long scored on a 40 yard touchdown pass from QB Nio Tau. Treavon Norton took a pass in for 30 yard touchdown to open the 2nd quarter. The Bears spread offense scored throughout the game with several notable performances. QB Tau both ran and threw the ball with authority and scored on a long touchdown run to start the second half. Jahpone Niko ran the ball inside with authority. The offensive line of Christian van Stralen, Songi Eke, Aisea Matele and Afu Fonua controlled the line of scrimmage on both run and pass plays. The only thing that slowed the Bears spread offense attack was a running clock that initiated by the referees midway through the 3rd quarter because of the lopsided score. The Bears were equally dominate on defense with outstanding play by many. MLB Eke and SS JD Carson made many hard hitting tackles. The defensive line of Alex Raas, Uate Uhila, and Teau Faletau recorded many tackles for losses and QB sacks. The few times the Wildcats got in the redzone, the Bears defense rose to the occasion in throwing a shut out.

The impressive win by the Bears was a credit to the excellent Freshman coaching staff. The Bears were well prepared in every phase of the game. The Bears next game is this Saturday, 9/10, at 11 am at Serra high School in San Mateo.
