Back to School Night
Back to School Night is Thursday, September 1 starting at 6:15 pm in the M-A Performing Arts Center with a message from Ms. Kennel. We would love to have new families attend this presentation, but all are welcome. Classroom visits begin with 0 period at 6:50 pm and parents/guardians will then follow their student's schedule, visiting each teacher for 10 minutes.

M-A is offering morning and afternoon PSAT/SAT review classes this fall. Classes will begin on Monday, September 12 and will prepare students for the November 4 SAT exam and the October 19 PSAT exam. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, September 7. More information can be found at mabears/SAT. To be added to our email list click here .

College & Career Center
Welcome back everyone! And a very special hello to our seniors, the Class of 2017! The College & Career Center has reopened in the B-wing next to the Guidance Office. Come and check out the renovations! The CCC is a resource for ALL students to explore colleges and careers, and it is also a place where students can hang out with friends, study, ask questions, get a work permit, find a part-time job, etc. For parents of seniors only, you are invited and encouraged to attend Senior Parent College Night on Tuesday, September 6 at 6 pm at the PAC Cafeteria (simultaneous Spanish interpretation available). This will be an opportunity to learn what lies ahead this year in the college application process for your students. Senior parents are also encouraged to attend Financial Aid Night with your student on Tuesday, September 27 at 6 pm in the PAC Cafeteria (in English) or the M-A Library (in Spanish). A financial aid expert will explain the financial aid process and answer questions you may have.

Volunteers Needed for Challenge Day 2016 - Be the Change!
Come participate in one of the most meaningful volunteer opportunities of the year.
Join us Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, October 10, 11 or 12 for this important one-day workshop that promotes compassion, communication and community building among the Class of 2020. It's a great way for parents of all students to get involved at M-A, helping our teens break down barriers and creating new levels of empathy and respect.
Adult volunteers are critical to the program's success in the following roles:

Reflections Arts Competition
"What is Your Story?" is the theme for this year's Reflections Arts Competition. Reflections is a national PTA arts competition that covers six art disciplines--Photography, Visual Arts, Music Composition, Film Production, Dance Choreography and Literature. All entrants must create a work of art based on the theme "What is Your Story?" The artwork is judged by working artists in our community and the winning entries then move on to compete at the District, State and even National levels.
All entry forms and rules are available on the M-A PTA website or from any of the Arts Department faculty. Due date for entries is November 4. So go and create a work of art that tells the world "What is Your Story?"

HOMEWORK. COLLEGE ESSAYS. SOCIAL MEDIA. SPORTS. VOLUNTEERING. PART-TIME JOBS. FRIENDS. Teens' lives are jam-packed from the minute they wake up until the time they finally sleep--just keeping up is a daily struggle for many.
Partially filmed at Menlo-Atherton, BREAKING POINTS explores the stress and pressures our teens face every day, as well as the unhealthy ways that some of them cope. This powerful film is part of The Partnership for Drug-Free Kids' Medicine Abuse Project, a national action campaign with the goal of preventing and addressing prescription medicine abuse among teens.
M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. Simultaneous Spanish interpretation will be available.

Support M-A Athletics by purchasing an All-Sports Pass!!! This pass will grant access to your immediate family for all M-A home contests for the current school year (excluding playoffs). This is limited to two adults and two children under 18 in your immediate family for only $150, but you can also add additional family members for $25 each. Sports News
The Bears Varsity Football Team opened its season at the home of the 13th ranked Bellarmine Bells and demonstrated the kind of exciting play we're sure to see this season. Showcasing Coach Adir and his staff's new offensive and defensive schemes, the Bears counter punched and fought their way back from an early deficit caused by interceptions and turnovers, to make the game competitive to the very end. The offense was led by Aajon Johnson, who passed and ran for a touchdown and set the table for a TD with a 60 yard completion to Marquise Reid, who ran the ball in for the score and also had kickoff returns of 40 and 25 yards. Jordan Mims picked up where he left off last season with his fearless running attack and Mekhi Blackmon had a circus catch for a touchdown. The defense was led by numerous tackles by Christian Wiseman. Enough can't be said about the guys in the trenches, some who play both ways, and their ability to rise to the occasion on numerous "back against the wall" possessions by the Bells. Just a few that deserve mention among the many are Ryan Buck, Epeli Mataele, Anders Chiang, Noa Ngalu, and Ben Makoni. A few of the defensive secondary players that had real impact include Tate Tussing, Stavro Papadakis, and Gary Carter. On special teams, Michael Pariseaut caused the Bells' punt returners to drop the ball three times, and Spencer Corona, who made two PATs, kicked off both directionally and deeply, and also kicked off and went downfield to recover the fumble on his own kick! The final score was Bellarmine 34, M-A 20, though the game was much closer than the score indicates.
Our next game is at Coach Parks Field on Saturday, September 3 at 2 pm versus perennial passing power Marin Catholic. Come out and Cheer On our Bears!!
The JV Football team opened the 2016 season on Friday night with an exciting and well-fought non-league game against Bellarmine College Preparatory. Highlights included an interception by Ric Gold, which he returned 48 yards for a touchdown. Will Jackson-Roundtree, Tevita Tafuna, Kiu Teu and Rinaldo Valle all contributed on defense to hold off the Bells. Feleti Malupo who had numerous great runs throughout the game ran the ball 78 yards for a touchdown. Joey Olshausen returned a kick off for 19 yards. Quarterback Daniel Heimuli then completed a pass to Grant Henry. After another run by Malupo, this time for 11 yards, Heimuli, with his final of many important runs in the game, completed the drive with a 44 yard run for a touchdown on a quarterback keeper. The 2 point conversion was unsuccessful. Final Score: Bellarmine 21, M-A 20.
Come cheer on the JV Bears next week at their first season home game against non-league football powerhouse Marin Catholic High School on Saturday, September 3 at 11:30 am at Coach Parks Field.

La Noche de Regreso a la Escuela
La Noche de Regreso a la Escuela es el jueves primero de septiembre comenzando a las 6:15 pm en el PAC para escuchar un mensaje de la Senora Kennel. Nos gustaria mucho que todas las familias participaran y todas las familia son bienvenidas. Las visitas a los salones de clase comienzan con el periodo 0 a la 6:50 pm y los padres y acudientes seguirán el horario de sus estudiantes visitando cada maestro por 10 minutos.

Clases de preparación para los exámenes SAT/PSAT en el otoño
Si hay suficiente interés, M-A está planeando ofrecer clases de repaso para los exámenes SAT/PSAT en la mañana y en la tarde este otoño. Las clases comenzarán el lunes 12 de septiembre y preparará a los estudiantes para el examen SAT del 4 de noviembre y el examen PSAT del 19 de octubre. Puede encontrar más información en mabears/SAT. Centro para la Universidad y la Carrera (CCC)
¡Les damos a todos la bienvenida!¡ Un saludo especial a nuestros seniors, la Clase del 2017! El Centro para la Universidad/carrera está de nuevo abierto en el area B a lado de la oficina de consejería. ¡Venga y vea las renovaciones! El CCC es un recurso para TODOS los estudiantes que necesitan explorar y recibir información acerca de las diferentes carreras y universidades. Así mismo, es un lugar donde los estudiantes pueden pasar un rato con amigos, estudiar, hacer preguntas, obtener un permiso de trabajo, informarse acerca de trabajos de medio tiempo, etc. Sólo para padres de seniors: Lo invitamos y animamos a que venga a la Noche de la Universidad para padres de Seniors el martes 6 de septiembre a las 6:00 pm en la Cafetería del PAC (se proveerá traducción simultánea en español). Esta será una oportunidad para enterarse de asuntos relacionados con el proceso de solicitud universitaria que su estudiante Senior llevará a cabo durante este año escolar. También queremos animar a los padres de Seniors para que vengan, con su estudiante, a la Noche de Ayuda Financiera el martes 27 de septiembre a las 6:00 pm en la cafetería del PAC ( en Inglés) y en la biblioteca de M-A (en español). Un experto explicará el proceso de ayuda financiera y responderá cualquier pregunta que usted pueda tener.

Se necesitan voluntarios para el Challenge Day 2016 (Día del Desafío) - ¡Tu eres el cambio!
Venga a participar en una de las oportunidades de voluntariado más significativas del año escolar. Unase a nosotros el lunes, martes o miércoles 10, 11 o 12 de octubre en este importante taller de un día que promueve la compasión, la comunicación y la creación de lazos comunitarios entre los estudiantes de la clase del 2020. Es una muy buena manera de que los padres de todos los estudiantes se involucren en M-A ayudando a nuestros adolescentes a que rompan barreras y a que creen nuevos niveles de empatía y respeto.
Para que el programa se lleve acabo con éxito, el desempeño de adultos voluntarios en las siguientes capacidades es crucial:

Reflexiones Concurso de Artes
"¿Cual es su historia?" es el tema este año en el concurso de artes Reflexiones. Reflexiones es un concurso de artes a nivel nacional de la PTA que cubre seis disciplinas artísticas --Fotografía, Artes visuales, Composición musical, Producción de cine, Coreografía de baile y Literatura. Todos los participantes deben crear una obra de arte basada en el tema "¿Cual es su historia?" La obra es juzgada por artistas pertenecientes a nuestra comunidad y los trabajos ganadores pasan a participar en los niveles distritales, de estado y hasta nacionales.
Todos los formularios y reglas de participación están disponibles en el sitio de la PTA de M-A o puede ser obtenida a travez de cualquiera de los miembros de la facultad del departamento de artes. La fecha límite para entrar en el concurso es el 4 de noviembre. Así que vaya y póngase a crear una obra de arte que le cuente al mundo ¿Cual es su historia?"

Tareas escolares. Ensayos universitarios. Medios sociales. Deportes. Voluntariado. Trabajos de medio tiempo. Amigos. La vida de los adolescentes está llena hasta el tope desde el momento en que se despiertan hasta que se van finalmente a dormir, y el sólo hecho de lidiar con todo esto se convierte en una lucha diaria para muchos de ellos. "Breaking Points" es un documental corto que forma parte del proyecto "Abuso de medicamentos" liderado por la Partnership for Drug-Free Kids (Asociación en pro de la juventud libre de drogas)' . Se trata de una campaña a nivel nacional cuyo objetivo es llamar la atención y prevenir el abuso de medicamentos en la población adolescente. Este potente documental explora el estrés y las presiones que nuestros adolescentes enfrentan cada día, así como las formas poco saludables que usan para sobrellevar estás presiones como es el abuso the estimulantes formulados. ¡Padres, estudiantes, facultad/empleados y miembros de la comunidad son bienvenidos!

Pase Deportivo para todos los deportes en M-A
¡¡¡Apoye al departamento de deportes de M-A comprando un Pase Deportivo para todos los Deportes!!! Este pase le dará acceso a usted y a toda su familia inmediata a todos los eventos deportivos jugados en M-A durante este año escolar (con excepción de las eliminatorias). El pase tiene un límite de dos adultos y dos menores de 18 años pertenecientes a su familia inmediata por sólo $150. Además, usted puede también agregar otros miembros de su familia inmediata por $25 cada uno. Noche de vuelo en Portola Valley
¡Venga y vea una demostración espectacular de aeromodelismo! ¡Observe a pilotos expertos haciendo volar aviones controlados por radio, planeadores y helicópteros! ¡Obtenga una vista panorámica por medio de cámara de televisión en vuelo! Vea modelos de aviones iluminados haciendo acrobacias en la noche.
Hoagies una idea de cómo se siente volar usando un simulador R/C . Permita que un instructor le enseñe a volar un avión R/C usando un sistema de "dual control". Construya y llévese a su casa su propio "pie-plate" glider.

- Sports entries are due by Sunday at noon (to cover Friday or Saturday events).
- Please do not send attachments. Send article content in the body of the email.
- Include all details like date, time, location, cost, contact info, and URL.
- Include a Spanish translation if your article includes info that all parents need. (Please email BearNotes if you need help with translation.)
- All submissions are subject to editing by the PTA.
