Dear M-A Families and Students- Welcome to 2016-17! This year, we will continue to foster our M-A Community for students and staff and get back to PRIDE! As a school, we are committed to developing academically prepared and socially responsible students. If we do our job, you will hopefully hear your students talking about Patience, Respect, Integrity, Determination and Empathy (PRIDE) at home. On Monday and Tuesday, we will have our class assemblies to welcome students back. This weekend, take a look at the planners they all received (thanks to the M-A PTA) which has information about school programs, rules, expectations and, of course, is a tool for students to record homework assignments. I am pleased to report we have had a smooth start to the school year. We welcomed our Class of 2020 during our first 9th grade arena check in and BBQ on Tuesday, August 16th. Students got schedules, toured the campus, opened lockers, and found their classes so they would know where to go on Wednesday. While we had some glitches - a long photo and locker line- we appreciate your letting us experiment with a new format that we will refine for the future. Thank you to our staff, PTA volunteers, and M-A Foundation for making it possible. Although our enrollment for the year is still pending as we add and drop students, we should have approximately 2,360 students. The vibe on campus is positive! I was impressed with our dedicated teaching staff as I popped into classes this week. All were up and running on day one, many doing activities to tie content to community building in the classroom. The campus also looks great. We were fortunate this summer to have exterior painting projects done, the gym roof replaced, our guidance office remodel completed, our parking lot re-striped, and added 130 bike racks and two repair stations in the corner of the faculty parking lot on Oak Grove and Middlefield. Landscaping in front of the Performing Arts Center is in progress to include more drought resistant plants and in the fall, we will replant an Oak tree in the senior lot entrance to replace the beloved one that fell last year. Our new 21 classroom building with a covered eating area should be finished in February 2017. Our website also had an upgrade. Please bookmark it - www.mabears.org - and use it as a resource for news, events, information and resources at M-A. We look forward to seeing you on Back to School Night September 1st. New Bus Route 81 Dedicated to M-A and Changes to Route 280
Bus Route 81On August 8, 2016, SamTrans started a pilot school-day only bus route, route 81, to serve the Menlo-Atherton High School community. The new route 81 has been set to serve passengers from nearby University Village, the Gardens, and the Willows/Woodland Park neighborhoods to Menlo-Atherton High School. The map and schedule can be downloaded here.
Bus Route 280
SamTrans route 280 runs between the City of East Palo Alto, the downtown Palo Alto/Caltrain station, and the Stanford Shopping Center. Beginning August 7, 2016, SamTrans bus route 280 will be rerouted to include the Woodland/Newell neighborhood on the West side. The location of the new schedule and map for the route 280 can be found here.
Notable changes to route 280 include the following:
- There is now integrated public transit service between the West side and East Side of the community, with SamTrans serving all neighborhoods in East Palo Alto.
- Stops formerly in the Gardens neighborhood will now be located along Pulgas Avenue at E. Bayshore Rd/Pulgas Ave, Gaillardia Way/Oaks St/Pulgas Ave and O'Connor St/Pulgas Ave.
- Hourly service is available from about 6 am until about 10 pm, Monday through Friday.
- Weekend service is available on Saturdays and Sundays from about 7:30 am until 7:30 pm.
- This change reroutes bus 280 out of the Gardens neighborhood side streets onto major arterials to reduce safety issues associated with parking and pedestrians.
- The former Caltrain Shuttle will be discontinued in September 2016.

M-A is planning on offering morning and afternoon PSAT review classes this fall if there is sufficient interest. Classes will begin on Monday, September 12 and will prepare students for the November 4 SAT exam and the October 19 PSAT exam.More information can be found at mabears/SAT. College & Career Center
Welcome back everyone! And a very special hello to our seniors, the Class of 2017! The College & Career Center will reopen this Wednesday in the B-wing next to the Guidance Office. Come and check out the renovations! The CCC is a resource for ALL students to explore colleges and careers, and it is also a place where students can hang out with friends, study, ask questions, get a work permit, find a part-time job, etc. For parents of seniors only, you are invited and encouraged to attend Senior Parent College Night on Tuesday, September 6 at 6 pm at the PAC Cafeteria (simultaneous Spanish interpretation available). This will be an opportunity to learn what lies ahead this year in the college application process for your students. Senior parents are also encouraged to attend Financial Aid Night with your student on Tuesday, September 27 at 6 pm in the PAC Cafeteria (in English) or the M-A Library (in Spanish). A financial aid expert will explain the financial aid process and answer questions you may have.

Reflections Arts Competition
"What is Your Story?" is the theme for this year's Reflections Arts Competition. Reflections is a national PTA arts competition that covers six art disciplines--Photography, Visual Arts, Music Composition, Film Production, Dance Choreography and Literature. All entrants must create a work of art based on the theme "What is Your Story?" The artwork is judged by working artists in our community and the winning entries then move on to compete at the District, State and even National levels.
All entry forms and rules are available on the M-A's PTA website or from any of the Arts Department faculty. Due date for entries is November 4. So go and create a work of art that tells the world "What is Your Story?"

HOMEWORK. COLLEGE ESSAYS. SOCIAL MEDIA. SPORTS. VOLUNTEERING. PART-TIME JOBS. FRIENDS. Teens' lives are jam-packed from the time they wake up until the time they can finally sleep, and just keeping up is a daily struggle for some.
BREAKING POINTS, a short documentary, explores the stress and pressures our teens face every day, as well as the unhealthy ways that many of them cope, including abusing prescription stimulants. This powerful film is part of The Partnership for Drug-Free Kids' Medicine Abuse Project, a national action campaign with the goal of preventing and addressing prescription medicine abuse among teens.
M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. Simultaneous Spanish interpretation will be available.

Mandatory Meetings for All M-A Athletes and Their Parents
This year, the Athletic Department and Boosters will be hosting mandatory meetings for student athletes and their parents. Three meetings are planned, one for each sport season. Students and parents are required to attend only one meeting during the year, and it must be before their the sport season begins. The first mandatory meeting is Thursday, August 25 at 6 pm in the Ayers Gym. There will be a general M-A Athletics session and then each team will break-out into individual meetings. (Other meetings will be held Wednesday, November 16, 2016 and Wednesday, February 15, 2017.) M-A All-Sports Pass
Support M-A Athletics by purchasing an All-Sports Pass!!! This pass will grant access to your immediate family for all M-A home contests for the current school year (excluding playoffs). This is limited to two adults and two children under 18 in your immediate family for only $150, but you can also add additional family members for $25 each. To purchase an All-Sports Pass, fill out an order form found here...M-A All-Sports Pass and send the form and a check to "M-A Athletics" to the school's address found on the form. Estimados Familias de M-A y Estudiantes- ¡Bienvenidos al año escolar del 2016-17! Este año vamos a seguir fomentando nuestra comunidad en M-A con los estudiantes y el personal y regresar con nuestro PRIDE (Orgullo)! Como escuela, estamos comprometidos con el desarrollo académico y social de los estudiantes. Si hacemos bien nuestro trabajo es de esperarse que usted escuche a sus estudiantes, en casa, hablar de Paciencia, Respeto, Integridad, Determinación y Empatía (PRIDE). El lunes y martes tendremos nuestras asambleas de clase para dar la nueva bienvenida a los estudiantes. Este fin de semana, dele un vistazo a las agendas que todos sus estudiantes recibieron (gracias a la PTA de M-A) . Estas agendas no sólo son una herramienta que utilizan los estudiantes para anotar sus tareas sino que, también, contienen información sobre los programas escolares, las reglas y las expectativas. Me complace informarles que hemos tenido un buen comienzo del año escolar. El martes 16 de agosto le dimos la bienvenida a nuestra Clase de 2020 durante nuestro Arena Check In y barbacoa para el 9º grado . Los estudiantes obtuvieron sus horarios, recorrieron el campus, abrieron sus casilleros, e identificaron sus salones de clases para que supieran a donde ir al día siguiente (miércoles). Aunque tuvimos algunos inconvenientes - largas filas para tomar fotos y reservar los casilleros, apreciamos que nos hayan permitido experimentar con un nuevo formato que refinaremos en el futuro. Gracias a nuestro personal, voluntarios de la PTA y la Fundación de M-A por hacer todo esto posible. Si bien nuestro proceso de matricula y registro no ha sido finalizado ya que aún estamos añadiendo o quitando algunos alumnos, esperamos tener aproximadamente 2.360 estudiantes este año. ¡El ambiente en el campus es positivo! Estaba impresionada con la dedicación de nuestro personal cada vez que entraba en los salones de clases esta semana. Todos estaban en funcionamiento el primer día participando en actividades que combinaban el contenido académico con la creación de un ambiente comunitario en el salón. El campus también se ve muy bien. Estuvimos afortunados este verano en tener proyectos de pintura exterior, sustituir el techo del gimnasio, completar la remodelación de la oficina de Consejería y Orientación, marcar las líneas en el estacionamiento, y añadir 130 bastidores de bicicletas y dos estaciones de reparación en la esquina del estacionamiento de la facultad en Oak Grove y Middlefield. El frente del Performing Arts Center (PAC) está en el proceso de incluir plantas resistentes a la sequía y, en el otoño, vamos a transplantar un roble ya crecido en la entrada del estacionamiento de los seniors para reemplazar el tan apreciado árbol que se cayó el año pasado. Nuestro nuevo edificio de 21 salones con una área cubierta para comer debería ser terminado en febrero del 2017. Nuestro sitio de web también tuvo una actualización. Nuevas Rutas: Ruta 81 dedicada a M-A y Ruta 280
Ruta de bus 81Empezando el 8 de agosto del 2016, SamTrans estará ensayando una ruta, unicamente para los días de escuela durante este año académico, al servicio de la comunidad de Menlo-Atherton High School. El día de la foto ( Pre-picture Day) y el día de actividad de registro (Arena Check-in) empiezan el dia 10 y 11 de agosto así que estas rutas estarán disponibles ¡justo a tiempo para servir a los alumnos y sus familias! La nueva ruta 81 se ha establecido para servir pasajeros de cerca de los vecindarios de University Village, el Garden, y los Willows/Woodland Park y que se dirigen hacia Menlo-Atherton High School. El mapa y horario se pueden descargar aqui. Ruta de bus 280 Ruta 280 corre entre las ciudades de East Palo Alto, Palo Alto/ estación de Caltrain, y Stanford Shopping Center. Empezando el 7 de agosto del 2016, la ruta 280 de SamTrans se desviará para incluir los vecindarios en el oeste de Woodland y Newell. Clases de preparación para los exámenes SAT/PSAT en el otoño
Si hay suficiente interés, M-A está planeando ofrecer clases de repaso para los exámenes SAT/PSAT en la mañana y en la tarde este otoño. Las clases comenzarán el lunes 12 de septiembre y preparará a los estudiantes para el examen SAT del 4 de noviembre y el examen PSAT del 19 de octubre. Puede encontrar más información en mabears/SAT. Centro para la Universidad y la Carrera (CCC)
¡Les damos a todos la bienvenida!¡ Un saludo especial a nuestros seniors, la Clase del 2017! El Centro para la Universidad/carrera reabrirá este miércoles en area B a lado de la oficina de consejería. ¡Venga y vea las renovaciones! El CCC es un recurso para TODOS los estudiantes que necesitan explorar y recibir información acerca de las diferentes carreras y universidades. Asei mismo, es un lugar donde los estudiantes pueden pasar un rato con amigos, estudiar, hacer preguntas obtener un permiso de trabajo, informarse acerca de trabajos de medio tiempo, etc. Sólo para padres de seniors: Lo invitamos y animamos a que venga a la Noche de la Universidad para padres de senior el martes 6 de septiembre a las 6:00PM en la Cafetería del PAC (se proveerá traducción simultánea en español). Esta será una oportunidad para enterarse de asuntos relacionados con el proceso de solicitud universitaria que su estudiante senior llevará a cabo durante este año escolar. También queremos animar a los padres de seniors para que vengan, con su estudiante, a la Noche de Ayuda Financiera el martes 27 de septiembre a las 6:00PM en la cafetería del PAC ( en Inglés) y en la biblioteca de M-A (en español). Un experto explicará el proceso de ayuda financiera y responderá cualquier pregunta que usted pueda tener.

Reflexiones Concurso de Artes
"¿Cual es su historia?" es el tema este año en el concurso de artes Reflexiones. Reflexiones es un concurso de artes a nivel nacional de la PTA que cubre seis disciplinas artísticas --Fotografía, Artes visuales, Composición musical, Producción de cine, Coreografía de baile y Literatura. Todos los participantes deben crear una obra de arte basada en el tema "¿Cual es su historia?" La obra es juzgada por artistas pertenecientes a nuestra comunidad y los trabajos ganadores pasan a participar en los niveles distritales, de estado y hasta nacionales.
Todos los formularios y reglas de participación están disponibles en el sitio de la PTA de M-A o puede ser obtenida a travez de cualquiera de los miembros de la facultad del departamento de artes. La fecha límite para entrar en el concurso es el 4 de noviembre. Así que vaya y póngase a crear una obra de arte que le cuente al mundo ¿Cual es su historia?"

Tareas escolares. Ensayos universitarios. Medios sociales. Deportes. Voluntariado. Trabajos de medio tiempo. Amigos. La vida de los adolescentes está llena hasta el tope desde el momento en que se despiertan hasta que se van finalmente a dormir, y el sólo hecho de lidiar con todo esto se convierte en una lucha diaria para muchos de ellos. "Breaking Points" es un documental corto que forma parte del proyecto "Abuso de medicamentos" liderado por la Partnership for Drug-Free Kids (Asociación en pro de la juventud libre de drogas)' . Se trata de una campaña a nivel nacional cuyo objetivo es llamar la atención y prevenir el abuso de medicamentos en la población adolescente. Este potente documental explora el estrés y las presiones que nuestros adolescentes enfrentan cada día, así como las formas poco saludables que usan para sobrellevar estás presiones como es el abuso the estimulantes formulados. ¡Padres, estudiantes, facultad/empleados y miembros de la comunidad son bienvenidos!
Las series educativas para padres de M-A son gratis, patrocinadas por la PTA de M-A , el Sequoia Healthcare District, y el Sequoia Union High School District. Estará disponible la traducción simultánea al español.

Se Necesitan Utiles Escolares
¿Tiene su compañía o lugar de trabajo un exceso de carpetas archivadoras u otros útiles escolares? Los estudiantes y maestros de M-A también necesitan cinta de pegante, tijeras, papel, sacapuntas, calculadoras básicas, perforadoras, etc. Puede traer sus donaciones a la sala de maestros, o contacte a Sue Kayton (kayton@alum.mit.edu) para recoger cualquier donación corporativa de gran escala.

Este otoño, Global Leaders (GL) le area la bienvenida a un nuevo grupo de estudiantes líderes: ¿Será usted uno de ellos? GL le confiere poder a los estudiantes para que se vuelvan ciudadanos conscientes y líderes efectivos capaces de create un cambio positivo y sostenible. Mediante iniciativas lideradas por estudiantes como son el Surf Riders Club, Intercambio ( un programa de intercambio lingüístico en M-A), M-AHS Mural Project, y un viaje de inmersión y servicio de una semana a Guatemala en abril del 2017 o el viaje de inmersión y servicio de dos semanas a Guatemala en junio del 2017, usted pasará todo el año afianzando sus habilidades de liderazgo a la vez que adquirirá experiencias increíbles. A medida que planea su participación en diferentes clubes este año, considere comprometerse con Global Leaders y así: - Viaje
- Aprenda o mejore sus habilidades lingüísticas y conocimiento del español
- Responda a las necesidades de su propia comunidad
- Trabaje a la par de los guatemaltecos en sus comunidades

Reuniones obligatorias para todos los deportistas de M-A y sus respectivos padres
Este año el Departamento de Deportes y los Boosters convoker a reuniones obligatorias para los estudiantes deportistas y sus respectivos padres. Se han planeado tres reuniones, una por cada temporada deportiva. Los estudiantes y sus padres están obligados a participar en sólo una de las tres reuniones durante el año y debe ser antes de que inicie la temporada del deporte escogido por su estudiante. La primera reunión obligatoria será el jueves 25 de agosto a las 6 pm en el Gimnasio Ayers. Habra una sesión general referente a los deportes en M-A y, luego, cada equipo se agrupará para tener reuniones enfocadas en un deporte específico en la respectiva temporada. (Las otras dos reuniones se llevaran a cabo el miércoles 16 de noviembre del 2016 y el miércoles 15 de febrero del 2017). Pruebas femeninas de golf
Las pruebas femeninas de golf serán llevadas a cabo esta semana después de la escuela. Lunes: en el campo de golf de Shoreline. Martes: en el Stanford Driving Range y de nuevo en Shoreline el miércoles. Por favor, contacte inmediatamente a Coach Taylor en jtaylorsmith@seq.org si usted está interesada o si tiene cualquier pregunta al respecto. Debe presentar el paquete de autorización deportivo. |

Pase Deportivo para todos los deportes en M-A
¡¡¡Apoye al departamento de deportes de M-A comprando un Pase Deportivo para todos los Deportes!!! Este pase le dará acceso a usted y a toda su familia inmediata a todos los eventos deportivos jugados en M-A durante este año escolar (con excepción de las eliminatorias). El pase tiene un límite de dos adultos y dos menores de 18 años pertenecientes a su familia inmediata por sólo $150. Además, usted puede también agregar otros miembros de su familia inmediata por $25 cada uno. Para comprar un pase deportivo llene el formulario que encontrará aquí: M-A All-Sports Pass y envíe el formulario y un cheque a "M-A Athletics" a la dirección de la escuela que se encuentra en el formulario. - Sports entries are due by Sunday at noon (to cover Friday or Saturday events).
- Please do not send attachments. Send article content in the body of the email.
- Include all details like date, time, location, cost, contact info, and URL.
- Include a Spanish translation if your article includes info that all parents need. (Please email BearNotes if you need help with translation.)
- All submissions are subject to editing by the PTA.
