Dear M-A Community,
As the year comes to an end, I want to express my utmost thanks to the entire M-A community for supporting the school, staff and administration in a year of transition with enrollment growth, construction and a Principal change. As I reflect on the year, I am of course proud of the accolades and accomplishments of our athletic, band, journalism, art, music, video, speech/debate, home ec, and academic programs as well as individual student accomplishments and staff contributions, awards and recognitions. I'm most proud of our student led initiatives - with clubs like Pride Pals and Intercambio, spirited rallies, and Feel Good Fridays - we are working towards a sense of connection to the M-A community for every student.
Looking forward to 2016-17
To date, it looks like we will be welcoming 2,330+ students when the school year starts on Wednesday August 17. Look for your summer mailer with details about arena check-in. Freshmen will have their own arena check in on August 16 from 10 am to 1 pm with a barbecue and tours of the school with their course schedules in hand. Sophomores, juniors and seniors will participate in arena check in on Thursday August 11 from 8 am to 1 pm.
Come second semester, our new 21-classroom building and covered eating will be online-and our second phase STEM building construction will begin. Students will also have more bike parking in the Oak Grove lot and eventually on the Ringwood side of the campus as well.
Graduation 2016
In a few days, we will graduate our class of 2016, celebrate their milestone and wish them the best as they pursue their next endeavors. Please see our important notes about getting to the ceremony and parking-with the Marsh road closure, we encourage carpooling and arriving early.

News and Noteworthy
Freshman Patrick Kao has been named a semifinalist in the 2014 Broadcom MASTERS®, a program of Society for Science & the Public. This honor places him among a select group of 300 semifinalists named from more than 6,000 nominees throughout the United State. Patrick qualified for this national science fair competition by winning a medal in the Math and Software category at the California State Science Fair in April for his project: Creating a Space Flight Simulator Program.
Jenna Carson, teacher, was selected as the Emily Garfield award winner by the San Mateo County School Boards Association. Emily Garfield was a tireless advocate for at risk youth
and Jenna was selected for her work with students in the Aspirations Advocate program. In her words, "It takes a team of people to move a child from working on a plan for survival to a plan for success." Her goal is to first build a relationship and surround students with as many caring adults as she can find. What else defines her pedagogy? "No excuses, no regrets. If they are hungry, feed them, if they need clothes, provide them, if they need an ear, listen... this is not about babying them... it is about eliminating barriers and empowering students."

Parking for the Graduation Ceremony on Thursday, June 2
We recommend carpooling to graduation. There will be limited handicapped parking in the gym lot on Ringwood Avenue. Cars will need a handicap placard in order to park in this lot. The Senior Lot, on Ringwood and Middlefield, will be open for general parking at 1:30 pm. Overflow parking will be in the SRI parking lot on Middlefield, across the street from the school as well as the McCandless Business Center located at 525, 535, and 545 Middlefield Rd, Menlo Park. Further overflow parking will be in the USGS parking lot at 345 Middlefield Rd, which is open to the public. Please drive slowly and watch out for pedestrians. The school will have a shuttle available to transport families to and from this lot.
Coach Parks Field will open at 3 pm for general seating. The public will not be allowed on the field until this time. There will be reserved handicapped seating on the home side of the field in the metal bleachers. Accessible seating is also available on the visitor bleachers and on the track surrounding the field. The Graduation Ceremony will begin at 4 pm. Graduating Seniors need to report to Ayers Gym at 3 pm.

Reminder - Marsh Road Closed During Graduation Ceremony!
Beginning on May 31, 2016 access to Marsh Road will be closed to through traffic. Menlo-Atherton will host graduation on Thursday, June 2nd at 4:00 pm. Please remind guests to take Woodside Road or Willow Road exits from highway 101 to ensure families and graduates arrive on time. Attached you will find a detour map (PDF), outlining alternate routes provide by the city of Atherton.

Important Grad Night Instructions for Senior Parents
Senior Grad Night is Almost Here!! Come to the New Gym on Thursday, June 2, at 7:30 pm to check-in for Grad Night. The location is a secret, so please tell your student to come dressed casually in layers to be comfortable indoors or outdoors. Dinner will be at 9:00 pm and breakfast before 3 am There is not much time between the end of graduation ceremony and check-in, so plan accordingly.
Please tell your student to bring their student ID and cell phone and nothing else!
If the student ID is lost, the office can print a temporary one. Tell your student to get the student ID in advance, and bring it. Do not bring food, drinks, money, backpack, purse, or anything else. If anyone brings these, they will be locked in your student's car for the evening. Any students who show up with contraband or under the influence, will be sent home.
Buses will return to the M-A parking lot by 3 am. Please plan for rides home at that hour.

Senior Awards Night
Honoring Outstanding Achievements
The annual M-A Senior Awards Night will be held on Tuesday, May 31, at 7 pm in the Performing Arts Center. During this inspirational evening, sponsored by M-A PTA, many hard-working and talented seniors (and a smaller number of juniors) are honored for outstanding academic and extracurricular performance as well as service to the school and community. Some of the awards will be a surprise, while many will be recognition for awards already received. Students will be recognized for a wide variety of scholarships, prizes, and commendations awarded by school and community groups. Last year, more than 200 individuals were recognized. Invitations will be mailed to families of students who will be receiving recognition. Awards to junior students will be presented early in the program (so juniors can go home to study for finals!), followed by senior awards. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony.

You can pick up your bouquet at the snack shack located at the entrance of the football field on June 2 at the beginning of the graduation ceremony or Leadership students will deliver it to your son or daughter.

Important Information & Reminders
Summer Homework & Summer Reading
Please check the www.mabears.org website and click on the summer assignments 2016-17 link under the Quick Links section. All students have summer reading for English class and some classes at M-A require summer homework. Completion of summer homework is mandatory for most Advanced Placement classes and for some honors classes. Please check the link for details.
Final Transcript Request Form
Seniors need to complete a final transcript request form available in room C-16 and return it to Leticia Gutierrez in C-16 with $5.00 and a stamped envelope addressed to the college or university they will attend next year no later than June 2, 2016.
Summer School
Summer School will take place at Menlo-Atherton High School. Eligible students received a confirmation letter in May 2016. Summer School will run Monday through Friday from 8:00 am until 1:30 pm as follows:
- First session: June 13 - July 1
- Second session: July 5 - July 22

Concurrent Enrollment
Any student who plans to complete any class outside of M-A needs to obtain prior approval by completing the Concurrent Enrollment Form This form is to be used for classes taken outside of M-A, including community colleges. This completed form is due to your counselor PRIOR to June 2, 2016. The community college concurrent enrollment forms are located on the college website or in the Career Center and Guidance Office and generally have earlier deadlines and oftentimes require students to take placement tests. Please see your counselor for information.
Students taking approved Concurrent Enrollment courses for acceleration must complete and submit the district's 2015-16 Concurrent Enrollment Form prior to June 2 and provide the Guidance Office with a transcript by August 3, 2016.

Attention, Parents of the Class of 2019
Volunteers Needed
It is a tradition for the freshman class to contribute refreshments for Senior Awards Night which will be held at the PAC on the evening of Tuesday, May 31. Refreshments include homemade (ideally) baked finger desserts without nuts such as lemon bars, cookies, and brownies. Cheese cubes and finger fruit (ie strawberries, grapes, etc.) are also welcome. Sign up here. Drop-off will be at the PAC lower level lobby, from 6 to 8:15 pm on Tuesday, May 31. If you need to drop off earlier in the day, you may drop off in the Library conference room. For the past ten months, I have called on volunteer parents to help us run a many events from helping out in the Admin Office during lunch every day, Canned Food Drive, Parent Ed Series, Fashion Show, ACI , Textbook Collection... You have responded with the same generosity of spirit with every event. Whenever I have sent out a call for help, you have signed up unhesitatingly, often exceeding my requests. We at M-A are so fortunate to have the most loyal, responsible, and efficient volunteer group anywhere. To those of you who are leaving M-A, thank you for all your contributions year in, year out, and happy times ahead. To those who will be returning next year, we hope you will join forces with our committee again. By signing up and showing up, each of you has made my job easy and made M-A a better place. Schedule distribution on Wednesday, August 17 will require fewer volunteers, since students will be able to download their schedules!!! Girls Volleyball Tryouts
Girls interested in trying out for volleyball this coming fall must fill out an online registration form before trying out. In addition, all participants will be required to submit an Athletic Clearance Packet by July 29. Please note that a) it can take up to two weeks to receive clearance and, b) a physician's signature is required, so please plan accordingly. An athlete will not be allowed to try out until she has received clearance. Tryouts for volleyball:
- Varsity Tryouts: Monday, Aug 8 - Wednesday, Aug 10, Ayers Gym. Times are TBD, but plan for "Double Days" on Monday and Wednesday.
- JV and Freshman Tryouts: Wednesday, Aug 10 - Friday, Aug 12, Ayers Gym. Times are TBD, but plan for "Double Days" on Wednesday and Friday.
All athletes are welcome to attend varsity tryouts. If you don't make the varsity team, you can continue trying out for the JV and Freshman teams. Swimming & Diving - State Results
Six M-A swimmers (Izzi Henig, Sophie Murff, Vincent Busque, Kate Denend, Haley Arrington and Maddie Worden) and one M-A diver (Mia Paulsen) headed down to Clovis for the second annual State High School Swimming Championship May 19th and 20th. The competition was fierce but the team excelled. Here are the results:
The Girls were 12th overall and the Boys (i.e. Vincent!) placed 75th.
- Izzi Henig capped off her amazing season with two very close 2nd place finishes in the 50 and 100 free.
- Vincent Busqué finished his high school swimming career on a high note placing 14th in the 500 free and 21st in the 200 free.
- Mia Paulsen continued her upward trajectory in the diving competition - she placed 9th this year as compared to 11th last year.
The 200 free relay, comprised of Henig, Murff, Worden and Denend, awed the spectators with a start to finish lead. Henig got them out in front and they never let go! They placed 1st in the consolation final; their time was 4th overall. They set another M-A record and made Automatic All American.
The CCS Champion 400 free relay (Arrington, Murff, Denend and Henig) capped off the competition with an incredible 12th place finish.

Help Kids with Reading or Math
You Could Change a Life
Please join other parent volunteers with All Students Matter in grades K-4 classrooms in east Menlo Park and East Palo Alto schools. You'll work in the same classroom once a week, building a relationship with the teacher and students, and be able to see the progress achieved. The students are always eager to work with you, and you'll have real impact in a community where over 80% of students are performing below grade level in reading and math. Querida comunidad de M-A,
A medida que se aproxima el final del año escolar, quiero expresarle mi más profundo agradecimiento a toda la comunidad de M-A por su apoyo a la escuela, al personal y miembros del equipo administrativo durante un año de transición que incluyó un crecimiento en el numero de estudiantes matriculados, trabajos de construcción y cambio de director. Hasta el momento parece que vamos a darle la bienvenida a más de 2,330 cuando comience el año escolar, el miércoles 17 de agosto. Esté atento a recibir comunicación por correo referente al evento de registro "arena check-in". Los Freshmen tendrán su propio " arena check in" el 16 de agostos de las 10 am a la 1 pm con una parrillada (barbecue) y tures de la escuela con el horario de los cursos a la mano. Los Sophomores, Juniors y Seniors participarán en el "arena check in" el jueves 11 de agosto de las 8 am a la 1 pm.
Cuando llegue el segundo semestre, nuestro nuevo edificio de 21 salones y zona de comedor cubierta estarán en linea y nuestra segunda fase de la construcción del edificio STEM comenzará. Los estudiantes tendrán, también, más estacionamientos para bicicletas en el lote de Oak Grove y, eventualmente, en el lado de Ringwood del campus.
Graduación del 2016
En pocos días, le daremos el grado a nuestra clase del 2016, celebren este logro y deséenles lo mejor a medida que continúan en el esfuerzo de lograr nuevas metas. Por favor, mire nuestras importantes notas referentes a la manera de llegar a la ceremonia y el estacionamiento teniendo en cuenta el cierre de la Marsh road, los animamos a que usen un vehículo compartido y a que lleguen temprano.

Noticias y Destacados
El freshman Patrick Kao fue nombrado semifinalista en el "Broadcom MASTERS® 2014", un programa de la "Society for Science & the Public". Esta distinción lo coloca entre un selecto grupo de 300 semifinalistas escogido entre más de 6,000 nominados de todos los Estados Unidos. Patrick calificó para competir en esta feria nacional de ciencias gracias a que ganó una medalla en la categoría de matemáticas y Software en la Feria de Ciencias del estado de California, en abril, con su proyecto: "Creating a Space Flight Simulator Program".
Jenna Carson, maestra, fue seleccionada como la ganadora del premio Emily Garfield por el San Mateo County School Boards Association. Emily Garfield fue una incansable abogada por los jóvenes en riesgo y Jenna fue seleccionada por su trabajo con estudiantes en el programa "Aspirations Advocate". En sus palabras, "Es necesario un equipo de personas para hacer pasar a un chico/a de trabajar en un plan para sobrevivir a un plan para lograr el éxito." Su meta es construir primero una relación y rodear a los estudiantes con tantos adultos que les brinden cuidado como ella pueda encontrar . ¿Qué otra cosa define su pedagogía? "No excusas, no arrepentimientos. Si tienen hambre, aliméntelos, si necesitan vestido, deles ropa, si necesitan ser oídos, escúchelos... No se trata de tratarlos como bebés... Se trata de eliminar barreras y darles poder a los estudiantes."

Estacionamiento para la ceremonia de graduación el jueves 2 de junio
Se recomienda transportarse a la graduación usando un vehículo compartido. Los espacios disponibles para discapacitados será limitado en el estacionamiento del gimnasio en Ringwood Avenue. Los coches necesitarán desplegar de manera visible un permiso para minusválidos para poder estacionarse en este lote. El estacionamiento de los estudiantes, en Ringwood y Middlefield, estará abierto para el estacionamiento general empezando a la 1:30 pm. Se ofrecerán espacios adicionales en el estacionamiento del edificio de SRI en Middlefield, enfrente de la escuela, así como el centro de negocios de McCandless en 525, 535 y 545 Middlefield Rd, Menlo Park. Más espacios disponibles al público para estacionamiento vehicular estarán en el edificio de USGS en 345 Middlefield Rd. La escuela tendrá disponible un servicio de transporte para trasladar a las familias de ida y vuelta de este lugar. Por favor, conduzca lentamente y tenga cuidado con los peatones. Para ver un diagrama de las opciones de estacionamiento, por favor vea el mapa adjunto.
Coach Park Field se abrirá a las 3 pm para asientos generales. El público no sera permitido en el campo hasta este momento. Habrá asientos reservados para discapacitados al lado de las graderías metálicas del "lado de casa". Asientos accesibles también estáran disponibles en las graderías del "lado visitante" y en la pista del campo circundante.

Padres de Seniors: Instrucciones importantes para la Grad Night
¡La Noche de Graduación para seniors "Grad Night" ya está aquí! Venga al Gimnasio nuevo el jueves 2 de junio a las 7:30 pm y regístrese para la Grad Night. El lugar del evento es secreto así que, por favor, dígale a su estudiante que venga vestido con varias capas de ropa relajada, tipo deportivo, de tal manera que se sienta cómodo para realizar actividades afuera o adentro del recinto donde se llevará acabo el evento. La cena será a last 9:00 pm y el desayuno antes de las 3 am. Es importante hacer planes teniendo en cuenta que no hay mucho tiempo entre el final de la ceremonia de graduación y el proceso de registro para la Grad Night para no estar en carreras.
¡Por favor dígale a su estudiante que traiga su tarjeta de identificación estudiantil, su teléfono y nada más!
Si la tarjeta de identificación del estudiante está perdida, la oficina administrativa puede imprimir una temporal. Dígale a su estudiante que obtenga su tarjeta de identificación con anticipación y la traiga al evento. No traiga alimentos, bebidas, dinero, mochila, cartera, bolsa o ninguna otra cosa. Si alguien trae cualquiera de estas cosas, tendrá que dejarlas dentro del coche del estudiante en el estacionamiento toda la noche. Cualquier estudiante que aparezca con contrabando o bajo la influencia de substancias ilegales será mandado/a a casa.
Los buses regresarán al estacionamiento de M-A alrededor de la 3 am. Por favor, asegúrese de tener un plan de vuelta a casa a esa hora.

Noche de premiación para los Seniors
Reconocimiento de logros excepcionales
La noche anual de premiación para los Seniors de M-A será el martes 31 de mayo a las 7 pm en el Performing Arts Center (PAC). Durante esta velada llena de inspiración, patrocinada por la PTA de M-A, muchos esforzados y talentosos Seniors (y un numero menor de juniors) serán reconocidos por un desempeño académico y extracurricular excepcionales así como por su servicio a la escuela y a la comunidad. Algunos de los premios serán una sorpresa mientras que otros serán menciones de premios ya recibidos. Los estudiantes serán galardonados con una variedad de becas, premios y elogios presentados por la escuela y grupos de la comunidad. El año pasado, más de 200 individuos fueron reconocidos. Se mandarán por correo invitaciones a las familias de los estudiantes que serán reconocidos en esta noche de premiación. Los premios a los estudiantes junior serán presentados en la primera parte del programa (¡para que los juniors puedan irse temprano a casa a estudiar para los exámenes finales!), seguidos por los premios a los Seniors. Se servirán refrigerios después de la ceremonia.

Flores y "Leis" (guirnaldas de flores) de graduación
¿Padres y familiares, quieren darle a su graduado algo especial? Pida un ramo de flores o una Lei a la floristería Kahuna Flowers. La floristería tiene una página en la red donde usted puede hacer su pedido. Todos los pedidos deben hacerse en la internet. ¡NO HAY DIA DE VENTAS! Puede recoger su pedido en el "snack shack" localizado a la entrada del campo de fútbol americano el 2 de junio, al comienzo de la ceremonia de graduación, o los estudiantes de Leadership harán entrega de su pedido a su hijo o hija personalmente.

Información importante y recordatoríos
Tareas de Verano y Lecturas para el Verano
Por favor revise el sitio web www.mabears.org y haga un "clik" en el enlace "Summer Assignments 2016-17" que se encuentra bajo la sección "Quick Links." Todos los estudiantes tienen lectura durante el verano para su clase de inglés y algunas clases en la escuela M-A requieren tarea durante el verano. Formulario "Final Transcript Request"
Los estudiantes del doceavo grado necesitan completar el formulario "final transcript request" que se encuentra en el salón C-16 y retornarlo a Leticia Gutierrez en el salón C16 con $5.00 y un sobre con la dirección de la universidad o colegio a donde van a asistir el próximo año y una estampilla a más tardar el 2 de junio del 2016.

Atención, Padres de la Clase del 2019
Se necesitan voluntarios
Es una tradición que la clase de los freshman (grado 9) contribuya con refrigerios (botanas) durante La Noche de Premiación para los Seniors " Senior Awards Night" que se llevará acabo en el PAC en la noche del martes 31 de mayo. Los refrigerios pueden incluir productos horneados en casa(preferiblemente) de tamaño pequeño, que se puedan comer sin la ayuda de cubiertos y sin nueces como "lemon bars", galletas y brownies. Cubitos de queso y frutas de comer con la mano como fresas, uvas, etc. también son bienvenidos. Inscríbase aquí. La entrega de sus contribuciones será en nivel bajo o "lobby" del PAC de las 6 a las 8:15 pm el martes 31 de mayos. Si necesita traer sus contribuciones más temprano en el día, puede hacer su entrega en el salón de conferencias de la biblioteca. Pruebas de voleibol femenino
Las chicas que estén interesadas en participar en las pruebas de voleibol el próximo otoño deben llenar un formulario de inscripción en linea antes de las pruebas. Adicionalmente, todas las participantes deben entregar un, all participants will be required to submit an Paquete de autorización atlética no más tarde del 29 de julio. Por favor, tenga en cuenta que a) El proceso de autorización puede demorarse hasta dos semanas y b) Se requiere una firma del médico del estudiante, así que planee su tiempo con estos dos puntos en mente. Usted puede cambiar una vida
Por favor, únase a otros padres voluntarios de All Students Matter en los salones de clase de los grados K a 4 en las escuelas de East Menlo Park y East Palo Alto. Usted ayudará en el mismo salón de clase una vez por semana, construyendo una relación con el maestro y los estudiantes y, así, poder ver el progreso obtenido.
