Marsh Road Closure

Dear M-A Community,

You may have heard that Marsh Road will be closed starting the week of either May 31 or June 6 and will re-open by August 15. Once we get confirmation of a start date, we will let you know.

Here is information from the Atherton Police Department:
The chain link fence wall and cement footing will be replaced with a new cement footing, a new wall, and a new railing system designed to prevent vehicles from entering the creek. In addition, all of the current structure must be removed as it is causing part of the creek wall to collapse.

To complete this work, Marsh Road will be fully-closed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from the beginning of June to the end of August. There will be a partial closure of Marsh Road (eastbound lane) before the main work begins and after the main work is completed. Of course, this is all fluid at this time and dates can change as we get closer.
  • Traffic from 101 to Redwood City will be routed via Marsh to Florence to Bay to 5th.
  • Traffic from 101 to Menlo Park will be routed via Marsh to Bay to Ringwood.
  • Numerous detour signs and changeable message boards will be deployed to provide instructions to drivers.
  • Only neighborhood traffic will be allowed on the portion of Marsh Road between Bay and Fair Oaks.
  • Between Fair Oaks and Middlefield Road, there will be an 8' lane to allow emergency vehicles and residence access.
  • Construction will occur between 8am and 8pm Monday through Saturday.

The Town of Atherton is hiring a Public Relations firm to get the word out about the closure.

Senior Awards Night
Honoring Outstanding Achievements

The annual M-A Senior Awards Night will be held on Tuesday, May 31, at 7 pm in the Performing Arts Center. During this inspirational evening, sponsored by M-A PTA, many hard-working and talented seniors (and a smaller number of juniors) are honored for outstanding academic and extracurricular performance as well as service to the school and community. Some of the awards will be a surprise, while many will be recognition for awards already received. Students will be recognized for a wide variety of scholarships, prizes, and commendations awarded by school and community groups. Last year, more than 200 individuals were recognized. Invitations will be mailed to families of students who will be receiving recognition. Awards to junior students will be presented early in the program (so juniors can go home to study for finals!), followed by senior awards. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony.
Attention, Parents of the Class of 2019
Volunteers Needed

It is a tradition for the freshman class to contribute refreshments for Senior Awards Night which will held at the PAC on the evening of Tuesday, May 31. On the girls side we had 6 league champions out of 16 events and qualified at least one athlete to CCS in 12 of the 16 events. On the boys side 3 league champions and qualified at least one athlete to CCS in 11 of the 16 events. Here are some of the standout performances:

Time to update the School records board at the Spieker pool! There are several new school records from this season, all earned at the CCS Championships:
Vincent Busque: Vincent's name will be placed on three records on the pool record board.  His 200 Free time bested the old record of 1:41.12 set by Nick Henze in 2011. He also set a new 500 Free school record of 4:31.68, beating the old school record of 4:35.08 set by John Scott in 1987. Vincent also anchored both of the free relays, one of which resulted in a new school record.
Izzi Henig: Izzi posted two first place wins at CCS, setting two M-A records in the 100 Free and 50 Free, beating previous records set by Brooke Stenstrom in 2013. Izzi shaved two seconds off the 100 Free, and a half second from Brooke's 50 Free school records. She also swam in the two relays, both earning M-A new record times.
Men's 4 x 50 Free Relay: In the prelims on Friday, Sophomores Carotakis and Ferenczy and Seniors Hakanson and Busque set a new 4 x 50 school record of 1:28.92, earning 10th place in the finals. The team beat out teams like Menlo, Sacred Heart, and PAL rival Carlmont, while beating the old school record set in 2012.
Women's 4 x 50 Free Relay: M-A women placed 5th in the 200 Free relay at CCS, setting a new school record of 1:36.49, beating a previous record of  1:38.24 set in 2015. The winning relay team consisted of Sophomore Henig, Juniors Murff and Denend, and Senior Worden, beating the previous record from 2015.
Women's 4 x 100 Free Relay: M-A women Arrington, Denend, Murff, and Henig, won FIRST PLACE in CCS competition, setting a new school record of 3:28.28, smashing the previous record set in 2013.

Overall in CCS competition, the Men took 13th place, tying with PAL rival Carlmont, the only team to beat them in PAL competition. With only five swimmers on the CCS team, the boys swam strong and were happy to end above Sacred Heart and Menlo.

The women placed 5th in CCS, beating out teams like St. Francis, Sacred Heart, Castelleja, and Menlo. The women scored many important wins and were buoyed by scores from the diving team. Divers Mia Paulsen and Anna Leake contributed to the women's score with junior Paulsen taking 3rd place, with 487.20 points, and freshman Leake taking 22nd place with 322.80 points.

Congrats to all of the aqua bears!  Henig and Busque head to California State Championships next week to swim individual events, along with Arrington, Denend, Dunn, Dundas, Murff, and Worden who will represent M-A in the relays. Paulsen will compete for M-A diving. Way to go Bears!

Boys Varsity Lacrosse
Last week M-A finished the season winning its PAL quarterfinal playoff against Carlmont (12-2) before coming up short against Menlo (9-12) in the league semifinals. In the quarterfinals, M-A dominated Carlmont. As he has all year, attackman Jack Wolf led the team with 4 goals. Trevor Brinton (3), Chris DiSibio (1), Jack Hansen (1), Robert Lane (1), Nick Worden (1) and Leo Cucinell (1) added the other goals. Defenseman Cucinell scored his first goal of the season. M-A gathered 32 ground balls during the game: Evan Siegel (7), Wolf (4), Anders Chiang (3), Max Miles (3), John Mills (3) and Brinton (3) led the team. Ground balls and forced turnovers provide scoring opportunities for the offense. Forced turnover leaders were Miles (7), Cucinell (4) and Mills (3). Goalie Cooper Waymire continued his strong play as he stopped 8 of 10 shots. Against Menlo, the game was a hard fought battle that was close to the very end. Wolf paced the offense with 5 goals while Jack Maxwell (2), Hansen (1) and Trystan Uphoff (1) completed the scoring. Assists contributed to the M-A scoring; leaders were Brinton (3), Uphoff (2), Maxwell (1), Cole Quinn (1), Wolf (1) and Miles (1). Ground ball leaders were Siegel (4), Wolf (3), Miles (3), Brinton (2), Uphoff (2), Cucinell (2), Waymire (2) and Michael Stark (2). The defensive leaders in forced turnovers were Chiang (3), Cucinell (3) and Dante Paquin (2).

M-A had a good season.  The team, which has many underclassman, developed a strong esprit de corps. By season's end, M-A displayed a high level of play that significantly progressed during the season. For the season, the team leaders in scoring goals were Wolf (59), Lane (25) and Hansen (20). Assist leaders were Uphoff (15), Brinton (9), Tommy Bohac (8) and Wolf (8). Ground ball leaders were Andrew Ojeda (67), Wolf (57), Lane (53) and Mills (48). Forced turnover leaders were Cucinell (24), Mills (24), Chiang (17), Miles (16) and Lane (13). Ojeda won 171 face-offs while only losing 102. Goalie Waymire stopped 183 of 310 shots on goal.  Last but not least, all the players thank Mr. Kryger, who led the coaching staff this season.

Boys Varsity Tennis
The M-A Boys Varsity Tennis team's impressive season finally came to an end with a quarterfinal finish in the highly competitive open CCS team tennis tournament.

M-A started off the week strong on Monday by upsetting 6th seed Homestead at Homestead by a team score of 5-2.The senior doubles team of Eric Laderman and Nishant Relan scored the first team point as they cruised through their opponents 6-2, 6-2. Jeffrey Jorgensen then crushed his singles opponent 6-2, 6-0 for the second win, followed by a straight set victory by Casey Morris at #1 singles. The other two singles matches went to Homestead, so M-A was up 3-2 with two doubles matches left. Freshman Timmy Berthier and senior Jack Jensen had lost the first set in their doubles match, so it was up to the #2 doubles team of senior Noah Milman and junior Camillo Saueressig to come through with a win. Sure enough Milman and Saueressig clinched the team victory!

On Tuesday, M-A faced a very tough #3 seeded Saratoga team. Senior Axel Brenner was injured so freshman Jake Andrew moved up to the #4 singles spot. Andrew put up a great fight but lost a close 6-2, 6-4 match to his senior opponent from Saratoga. Saratoga's singles players are known to be their strength and proved to be too much for #2 senior Reed Fratt and #3 sophomore Jorgenson too. So then it was up to Casey Morris at #1 singles and all the doubles teams to win. Milman and Saueressig easily won their match at #2 doubles to give M-A their first point. But Saratoga stacked their line-up and put their best doubles team at #3 doubles. Despite a hard-fought match, M-A's senior tandem of Laderman and Relan came up just short. That clinched the team victory for Saratoga. In the meantime, Casey Morris had lost his first set but was winning in the second set which apparently scared his opponent who decided to quit. Berthier and Jensen had lost the first set in their doubles match when the team match was decided but their opponents finished out the match which ended in a super tiebreak. The final team score was 3-4.

Congratulations to the Bears for a fantastic season and a strong finish, including another undefeated season in PAL League play.

Girls Varsity Softball
On Tuesday, the Bears played their last game of the 2016 season, losing 14-0 to first-place Sequoia in a 5-inning game. The Bears honored graduating Seniors Jess Burgos, Taylor Conrad, and Delilah Kline on Senior Day. Conrad pitched for the Bears and did well, walking only 2 batters, but got little support as the Bears committed 8 errors in the field and managed only one hit, a single by Victoria Sanie against the tough Sequoia team. Sarah Scandalios was robbed of a hit by a sliding catch of a sinking line drive by the Sequoia right fielder. Laura Kirk was the defensive standout of the game for the Bears, recording 4 putouts in center field. Thanks to the parents, fans, and coaches Rick and Jaclyn Vujovich, Nichole Hernandez, and Imaan Kerchgani, who led the young and largely inexperienced team to a fun year that showed great improvement over the course of the season. Go Bears!

  Boys Varsity Volleyball
Congratulations to the boys varsity volleyball team for an amazing season! After only two years in existence, the Bears managed to dominate the PAL league with an undefeated record, earning a spot in the CCS playoffs for the first time in M-A history! Unfortunately, the Bears suffered a tough loss to Los Altos in the first round of CCS playoffs, but they put up a good fight. The Bears won the first set 25-19 and then narrowly missed victory in the next 3 sets: 20-25, 21-25, 20-25. The Bears overall record for the season was 27-7. Heartfelt thanks to all the fans who came out to support the guys last Tuesday and throughout the season!!

Come See Grab Bag Theater's Spring Musical

Friday, May 20th at 7:00 pm
Saturday, May 21st at 1:00 pm and 7:00 pm
Veteran's Memorial Senior Center, 1455 Madison Ave, Redwood City

Tickets -- $5 for students and seniors, and $10 for adults at the door
Grab Bag Theater is a completely student-led and student-run theater company of M-A and local students. Opening night for Grab Bag Theater's spring musical, Urinetown is this weekend. The show depicts a hilarious and entertaining satire of a town suffering from a water shortage and drought that has led to a government ban on private toilets, forcing people to pay for the use of public amenities. If the poor don't obey the strict laws prohibiting free urination, they'll be sent to the dreaded and mysterious "Urinetown." There is murder, there is love, there is hope, and there is a brave, young leader named Bobby who leads a rebellion. Don't miss it!
