From
From the Principal
Dear M-A Community:

This is the first time I am starting my principal's message with a heartbreaking announcement. Over the weekend we learned Rick Longyear, veteran science teacher and swim coach, lost his daughter Sarah who passed away on Friday. Rick, his wife Sally, and son C.J. are getting support from family and friends at this time. Respecting the family's wishes, we will organize the M-A Community to offer support. Additionally, we will provide grief counseling to M-A staff and students who are are affected by his family's loss.

Final Weeks of the Semester
It's hard to believe we have 6 weeks until the class of 2016 graduates. During the senior meeting this week, students were spirited and excited about upcoming events. Thanks to the PTA for organizing a comedian to get them excited about grad night! Juniors completed smarter balanced testing this week and we will be finishing with make ups in the next few weeks. AP tests will start in May. We look forward to a strong finish for all students.

Our mid-term WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) visit on March 30th was a success. The visiting team validated that we are working on our critical academic needs identified three years ago, that students were happy at M-A, and that our articulation efforts with our feeder districts is impressive. Their recommendation was to continue to work on how we measure student progress and what the benchmarks are. Our mid-term report will be posted on the www.mabears.org website.

Upcoming Events
Mark your calendars for Wednesday May 4, Bike to School Day!  While we highly encourage biking, rolling or walking as they are active, we also want to emphasize coming to school in any way other than one student per car trip, so carpooling and taking public transportation are viable as well. Please plan ahead to choose an alternate option for May 4! More to come on our transportation initiatives that will kick into gear for 2016-17.

Our last Feel Good Friday will happen at lunch on May 20 and be combined with our annual carnival. Students, look for details on the exciting events and activities to come.

Administration Changes for 2016-17
Thanks to Dr. Lianides, Superintendent, we will have an additional administrator at M-A next year-1 Principal, 1 Instructional Vice Principal and 3 Administrative Vice Principals. I am pleased to announce we will have a fabulous team to start as of July 1, 2016.

First of all, Steve Lippi, Instructional Vice Principal (IVP) will retire from this role after 16 years!  Prior to serving as IVP, he was a math teacher and student activities director for a total of 30 years at M-A! Steve has been instrumental in organizing instructional priorities and working magic with the master schedule. While we will miss Steve, we will still have the benefit of his expertise and our students will have the benefit of his teaching as he will return to the classroom as a Math teacher. Karl Losekoot, current Administrative Vice Principal and previous veteran English teacher and department chair, will assume the role of Instructional Vice Principal. Congratulations to Steve and Karl.

In late February a panel of M-A staff and a parent representative interviewed 8 administrative vice principal (AVP) candidates. From this process, we were lucky to identify two highly qualified candidates - Brenda Bachechi and Janelle Bugarini who will join JC Farr, current AVP.

Brenda Bachechi earned her Doctorate in Education Leadership from San Francisco State University, an M. A. from University of Arizona in Special Education and B.A. in Education from Arizona State University.

She has served in an administrative role as the Sequoia Union High School Special Education Coordinator responsible for the leadership, administration, and supervision of the district's special education programs, services, and daily operations. She comes with a strong instructional strategies background as a special educator, beginning teacher support provider, and experience as a program and inclusion coordinator in the Portola Valley School District.

Janelle Bugarini is an M-A grad! She earned her B.A. from UC Berkeley in Spanish Literature, an M.S. in Education, TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) at City College New York in the Teaching Fellows Program and her Administrative Services Credential through the Principal Leadership Institute at UC Berkeley.

She has been at Berkeley High School for the last 11 years, including 9 years as a Spanish teacher. She taught Spanish for Native Speakers and AP/IB Spanish Language Seminar, served as Department Teacher Leader, and as an administrator for the last two years- one as Dean of Attendance and this year as Vice Principal. She has been in charge of the International School, (including the IB program) at Berkeley High.

New and Noteworthy
The M-A Chronicle and Mark both won National Pacemaker Awards this weekend from the National Scholastic Press Association. The M-A Chronicle also received a Best in Show Award for on-site entries. The M-A Chronicle ranks in the top 15 of all high school news sites and the Mark was a top 5 magazine. With more than 1500 member schools nationwide, it's a remarkable achievement for all of the students involved.

Sophomore Serafina Casey accomplished her Girl Scout Silver Award project. She deployed the Pulse Point app throughout San Mateo County so that CPR-trained citizen responders can locate the nearest AED and help resuscitate someone who having a cardiac arrest. Here's the link to the county's press release:  http://cmo.smcgov.org/blog/2016-02-23/county-launches-life-saving-app-help-heart-attack-survival.

Two students were selected to go to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Freshman Anna Quinlan developed a skin patch to detect Type 1 diabetes and sophomore Patrick Kao designed a drone project and also won the grand prize in the engineering and computer applications category at the San Francisco Bay Area Science Fair. He will also head to the state science competition in Los Angeles next month.

Sally Carlson has been selected as the CCS Female Student-Athlete of the Year! Chosen out of 9 finalists, she was honored in a Central Coast Section awards ceremony on April 19th and received a $1,500 scholarship.

M-A's FHA Hero Chapter placed in competitions at the state conference last weekend. Congratulations to Erin Sanchez and Ariel Sullivan - 1st place in Environmental Ambassadors, Gabrielle Westfield - 1st place in Menu Planning and Table Display and Ashley Ramirez - 2nd in Chapter in Review Portfolio.

Guidance, College and Career Center Under Construction

Just a reminder, you must always check in the front office before proceeding to see the Guidance Counselors. The front office will provide you with a pass to C-16 with the Guidance Office Support staff members who will contact your Guidance Counselor for you. Please do not go directly to the Guidance Counselors' offices. Thank you.

The Guidance Office and the College and Career Center will be under construction this spring and summer. Because of the construction, neither location will be accessible for the remainder of the 2015-16 academic year. However, staff (Guidance Counselors, College Advisor, guidance support staff and Work Experience Coordinator) will be temporarily relocated throughout the campus.

Due to this situation, we strongly recommend scheduling an appointment if you need to meet with a Guidance Counselor.  It's best to reach your student's Guidance Counselor via e-mail. Go to the Guidance email and phone directory to schedule. You may also contact the Guidance support staff in room C-16 for guidance services. Be sure to get a pass to C-16 from the front office.

The College and Career Center will be relocated to the Library Conference Room. Mr. Ken Gradiska, Work Experience Coordinator, will be relocated to L-1.

Swimming & Diving
The Bears continued to roll through the PAL competition with another big win over Aragon. All four teams dominated the swimming relays and individual events, barely dropping a single event to the Aragon team. JV Girls, JV boys, and Varsity girls are undefeated in PAL competition, and the Varsity boys have only one loss. Specific details will be provided in next week's Bearnotes.

This week the Bears face Burlingame on Thursday, followed by PAL trials on May 4th and 5th. PAL Championships are May 7th.

Bear print
Girls Varsity Softball
With 2 wins this week, the Bears have 4 wins in their last 6 games, improving to 5-8 overall. On Monday they faced Shasta, winning 12-2 in a five-inning game. Taylor Conrad started and pitched well for the Bears, striking out 6 while giving up just 1 walk and no hits in 3 shutout innings. Victoria Sanie finished up on the mound, striking out 5 in the last 2 innings. On offense, the Bears were led by Jess Burgos, Delilah Kline, and Sai Sema, who each had a hit and drove in 2 RBI. Sarah Scandalios had 2 hits and drove in one run, and Florence Filiai and Laura Kirk also had hits.

On Wednesday, the Bears faced first-place San Mateo, losing 17-0 in a 4 inning run-rule loss. The Bears played good defense, committing just 1 error, but were worn out by a steady barrage of hits by the strong San Mateo offense, which scored 4 runs in each of the first 3 innings to take a commanding lead. On offense, the Bears managed only one hit against the hard-throwing San Mateo pitcher, a single to center by Burgos.

On Thursday, the Bears played El Camino, avenging an early season loss with a 4-inning 14-2 run-rule victory. Conrad pitched well again to get the victory, allowing just 1 earned run on 3 hits and 1 walk in 4 innings. She was backed up by great defensive play, especially by Scandalios, who had 5 putouts in left field. On offense, the Bears were paced by Filiai who had 2 RBI on a triple to center field and 4 RBI for the game. Kline had 2 hits and 2 RBI, and Ava Rose hit a 2-run double.

This week, the Bears travel to Pinewood on Monday, April 25 and Jefferson on Wednesday, April 27. On Thursday, April 28, they play South San Francisco at home.

Girls Varsity Lacrosse
On Tuesday the Girls faced perennial WBAL powerhouse Menlo School. The Bears did well to hold the Knights to five first half points as nearly the entire first half was played in their defensive third. Strong defense from Grace Carlson and Izzy Carhardt. M-A got on the board when Izzy Regonini crease rolled near the end of the first half. In the second, the Knights went on a 3-0 run, but the Bears rallied back with goals from Emma Roellig, Madison Nelson and Emma Easton. However the Knights scored four straight to put the game away, 12-4.

On Thursday the Girls traded practice for community service, enjoying an afternoon of teaching lacrosse to the Boys and Girls Club at Garfield Elementary.

The Bears return to action on Tuesday when they host Sacred Heart Prep for a 4pm Tuesday game.

Boys Varsity Lacrosse
Last week the Bears easily won both of its games, beating Carlmont (12-3) and Aragon (12-0).  Against Carlmont, M-A was dominant. M-A's goal scorers were led by Jack Hansen (3) and Robert Lane (3), while Jack Wolf (2), Trystan Uphoff (2), Jack Maxwell (1) and Andrew Ojeda (1) rounded out the scoring. Tommy Bohac and Trevor Brinton led with two assists each. On defense, M-A's goalie Cooper Waymire saved 5 of 8 shots on goal. The Bears' strong defense forced 12 turnovers: Leo Cucinell (4), Anders Chiang (2) and John Mills (2) were the leaders. The Bears were relentless in getting the ground balls: Cucinell (7), Lane (4), Mills (4), Cameron DelRosso (3), Ojeda (3), Wolf (3), Max Miles (2), Nick Worden (2), Bohac (1), Devin Dundas (1), Maxwell (1), Cole Quinn (1) and Uphoff (1).  On Friday night, M-A achieved its first shutout of the season against Aragon. M-A's  goalie Waymire and the entire defense were outstanding. Goal scorers were Lane (3), Wolf (3), Quinn (2), Hansen (1), Bohac (1), Uphoff (1) and Maxwell (1). This week the Bears travel to Burlingame (Tuesday 7pm) and Menlo (Thursday 4pm).

Bear print
Boys JV Lacrosse
The JV Lacrosse team had a busy two weeks with eight games. They won six and lost two.

The good news is the boys had an eleven day Spring Break without practice. That was also the bad news. There was some rust built up for the first game against cross town rival Sacred Heart. SH had the home field advantage. The boys played steady in the first half ending down 2-3. SH played a physical game and stormed into the second half with a few quick goals and then held their lead winning 8-3. It was bad luck to have this game located on the second day back from the break. The boys will have a second chance at home when they play SH on May 5. Don't miss this game.

Next up was the Sequoia HS game. Like the Woodside team, the Sequoia team also is building their program. They have a new coach. MAHS won 17-0. The boys distributed their scoring attack. Jonno Schaff and Chris diSibio each had four goals, Thomas Murff had three, Evan "Joker" Siegel had two, and Nikolai Ambwahi, Robert Seiguer, Sal Ruiz, and Luke Christen each had one goal. The goal saves were just four. The defense looked solid with steady coverage from Dean Fratt, Jack Tully and midfielder Zorro Narsinghia, who had five ground balls.

On Saturday, the boys hosted the MAHS Boys JV Lacrosse Tournament. The boys beat Mitty High School twice, 8-2 and 5-3. St Francis High School suffered a loss at the hands of the sweaty Bear squad on a beautiful 82 degree day. Only Palo Alto High School was in the way of the championship. The boys were up 5-2 at the half. They seemed strong and dominant with goals from Siegel and Schaff and others. The defense was tight but Paly came back strong and eked out a 6-5 victory. It was a tense and exciting game and the boys improved much from their last game against Paly. Nick Warden returned from varsity injured reserve status and had several stellar games with multiple goals.

Next up was Carlmont High School. This was another shutout for the JV Bear lacrosse boys, 14-0. diSibio produced five goals on six shots, Schaff (five ground balls) and Murff had three goals and three ground balls, Brendan McLaughlin had two goals and four ground balls, and Caleb Hanson had one of each. It was a quiet day for the goalies, with two saves and one save respectively for Cameron Baker and John Schoenthaler. Narsinghia won seven face offs! Jack Noble contributed to disrupting the Scott's offense and maintaining the bagel on the score board.

The boys finished this past week with a yet another shutout, 13-0. Schaff and diSibio led the way combining for seven goals. Narsinghia went 9-4 on face offs. Baker (2 saves) and Schoenthaler (3 saves) maintained the shutout needing only five saves total.

The boys record is 16-3, including the four game tournament. They have two losses to Paly, and one to Sacred Heart with the rubber match set for May 5. There are some tickets still available.

Bear print
  Boys Varsity Golf
The Bears had another very successful week along with a super-strong finish to the regular season. At Sharon Heights this past Tuesday, they wrapped up an undefeated campaign by defeating Carlmont for the second time this year. The final score: M-A 196 -  Carlmont 205. Sophomores Bill Kirkpatrick and Leo Tuchman led the way with low scores of 38, followed closely by juniors Maxwell Heller (39) and Bryce Sevy (40), freshman Jonathan Dicks (41) and senior Andrew Dignum (45). Freshman Andre Wilkins and senior Jorge Pont also brought in solid scores of 42 and 43, respectively.

The big news is that the 12-0 record makes M-A the PAL winner, ending Carlmont's 4-year winning streak. Being undefeated also means M-A qualifies for CCS. More about those matches to come. Additionally, the boys on the varsity team finished with very impressive individual standings, with all of them placing in the top 30 of the overall league.

Way to go Bears!!! Keep it going in the post-season!

Boys Varsity Baseball
On Wednesday the Varsity resumed league play at home against Sequoia. The Bears got in an early hole 6-0 and could not climb out. Nick Olson, Hunter Sevy and James Sullivan all pitched in the 7-0 loss. On the offensive side junior Kennedy Ojeda lead the way with two hits including a double. Junior Kris Liang had the only other Bears hit.

On Friday the boys were back on the road for another encounter with Sequoia. The Bears played one of their best games and lost a very close one run game 4-3. Liang got the start and threw a very good 4 1/3 innings, allowing only five hits. Senior Ryan Klapper threw the final 1 2/3 inings and gave up no hits. The Bears bats were alive with junior Nick Prainito leading the way with two booming doubles, and a run scored. Senior Matt Johntson also had a big day with two hits and an RBI. Senior Bret Rodrigues added a long double and scored two runs. Klapper and Liang added the other two hits.

On Saturday the Bears traveled to Los Altos high for a non league game. The team got behind early and tried to battle back, eventually losing 8-2. Klapper started the game and threw three innings. Freshman Daniel Burke took the ball in the fourth inning, and was very sharp, giving up only one earned run, while striking out three Los Altos hitters. The Bears were held to only three hits by Johnston, junior Jimmy Wright, and Sevy.

Boys JV Baseball
On Tuesday, the Bears started a busy week of baseball by traveling to Campbell for a non-league game at Branham High School. Defensively, the Bears played well with no errors, but struggled offensively with only two hits which were back to back in the 3rd inning, one by Rio Zelaya and one by Geo Deras. Pete Discher pitched the first 4 innings and Johnny Eisenstat finished the game. Final Score: M-A 2 Branham 6.

The next day, the Bears were on the road again to start a series against a league opponent, Sequoia High School. The Cherokees handily beat the Bears on Wednesday. M-A had only two hits, a single by Grant Henry and a double by Tony Siri. Bears pitchers were Daniel Heimuli, Elliot Zeien and Finn Bjerknes. Final Score M-A 1 Sequoia 14. The highlight of the week came on Friday evening when M-A hosted Sequoia and tied the series. Anthony Waller pitched all 7 innings of the game with Bear hits from Deras, Joey Olshausen, Jake Wang and two hits each from Connor Nathan, Waller, and Zelaya.  Final Score: M-A 6 Sequoia 4.

On Saturday, the Bears hosted Los Altos High School in a non league match up. Despite a triple and a single by Zelaya, a double by Olshausen, three singles by Deras, 2 singles by Heimuli and singles from Ben Ferrick and Michael Pariseau, the Bears were only able to muster 4 runs. Bear pitchers were Wang, Deras, Zeien, Bjerkness, and Zelaya. Final Score M-A 4 Los Altos 14.

Boys Varsity Tennis
The M-A Boys Varsity Tennis Team did not lose a single match this week as they shut-out their league opponents by a team score of 7-0 on three consecutive days: Hillsdale on Monday, San Mateo on Tuesday and Burlingame on Wednesday. The home match against San Mateo was the last regular season home match for the seniors: Reed Fratt, Axel Brenner, Jack Jensen, Eric Laderman, Nishant Relan, Noah Milman, Danny Keane, Matthew Marianacci, and Jordan Prudhomme. Other winners this week included Casey Morris, Jeffrey Jorgenson, Timmy Berthier, Jake Andrew, Zach Ostrow, Chris Iyer, Theo Novak, Joe Trivaldi, Julian Giome, and Amaar Safdari.

The M-A boys clinched the PAL League Title with another undefeated season. This coming week is the PAL individual tournament. Team CCS will start the week of May 2.

Track & Field
The Bears completed a busy week yesterday at the St Francis Invitational. There were some very impressive performances including 3 school records! The varsity girls finished 2nd overall, the varsity boys 3rd, the F/S girls 8th and the F/S Boys 4th out of more than 40 teams.

Here are just some of the noteworthy performances :

1- Freshman Maggie Hall continued her great 1st year by adding her name to the M-A record books in both the 100 and 400. Her time of 58.04 at Thursday's meet is 5th in school history and her 100 time of 12.45 places her 6th in the event.
2- Cat Depuy had a very impressive race to kick off the meet. She placed 2nd in the 3000m race with a 20 personal best in the event.
3- The girls F/S 4x100 relay team of Megan St John, Autriyana Hardy, Monica Hill, and Jessica Eagle won the event on Saturday at St Francis. The same group of runners also finished 4th in the Sprint Medley Relay later in the day.
4- Also doing well in the 4x100 relay were the varsity girls (Logan Maines, Kathryn Mohr, Tatum Maines, and Maggie) who finished 3rd with a time of 49.57. That time places them 5th in school history.
5- Annalisa Crowe won the mile race, setting a new school record in the process! The former record had stood since 1987.
6- The second school record of the day came by way of the varsity girls in the Sprint Medley Relay. The team was comprised of Logan, Kathryn, Maggie, and Olivia Shane, who finished 2nd in the event.
7- This week also saw some great discus throws. On Thursday Bryce Rodgers threw 152'0" which not only won the meet, but placed him 14th in school history. Alex Tiznado also threw a personal best in the discus this week, throwing 104'0". Her throw places her 8th in school history.
8- Freshman Cameron Plume and Sophomore Karl Zahlhaas both joined the sub 5 minute mile club on Thursday running 4:59.90 and 4:57.54 respectively.
9- Also setting an impressive PR was Gunnar Jongebloed who jumped 11'3" in the Pole Vault to take 6th place at St Francis.
10- In one of the most exciting races of the season, the varsity boys Sprint Medley Relay team of Marquise Reid, Terrance Matthews-Murphy, Jordan Mims and Jack Gray were able to win the event. The top 4 teams were separated by less than 1 second; however, strong efforts by all 4 boys helped the team come out on top. Their time was a new school record by over 3 seconds.

Felicitaciones a Steve y a Karl.
