Guidance, College and Career Center Under Construction!
Just a reminder, you must always check in the front office before proceeding to see the guidance counselors. The front office will provide you with a pass to C-16 with the guidance office secretaries who will contact your guidance counselor for you. Please do not go directly to the guidance counselors' offices. Thank you.
The Guidance Office and the College and Career Center will be renovated and under construction this spring and summer. While under construction, both locations will not be accessible for the remainder of the 2015-16 academic year. However, staff (Guidance Counselors, College Advisor and guidance support staff) will be temporarily relocated throughout the campus. Due to this situation, we strongly recommend scheduling an appointment if you need to meet with a Guidance Counselor. It's best to reach your student's Guidance Counselor via e-mail. Swimming & Diving
M-A's divers competed in the CCS qualifying Brian Tanner Memorial Diving Meet this weekend. Freshman, Anna Leake, and junior, Mia Paulsen, met the qualifying standard and will be representing M-A at CCS is a few weeks. Paulsen placed first at the meet and now holds the current M-A girl's diving record with her total score of 487.2.
The last home meet against Hillsdale resulted in a clean sweep for the four Bears swim squads. All four squads beat Hillsdale soundly: JV women scored 141-16, JV men scored 134-30, Varsity women scored 135-22, and Varsity men scored 120-48. Of the 44 events, the Bears only lost 3 of the events to Hillsdale swimmers. The meet resulted in some fast swim times and many CCS qualifying times for relays and individuals. Varsity women and both JV teams remain undefeated in PAL competition, while Varsity Boys have only one loss in PAL competition. Girls JV won all of the 8 individual events and the 2 relays. Individual wins were posted by Julia Sherman (200 Free), Ayla Huhn (100 Individual Medley and 100 Free), Kyra Sheeper (50 Free and 50 Back), Brynn Williams (50 and 100 Breast), and Molly Banks (100 Back). JV Girls also won both relays: the 400 Medley Relay team (Sheeper, Williams, Huhn, and Allison Collins) and the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay (Collins, Maddie Sonderby, Sheeper, and Huhn) The Boys JV squad posted both relay wins, and 9 individual wins from Chris Lobdell (200 Free and 50 Fly), Hugo McMillan (100 Individual Medley), Adrien Carrou (50 Free), Cooper Gran (50 Back), Henry Marks (50 Free and 100 Back), Alec Berquist (50 breast), and Tyler Lewis (100 Breast). The 200 Medley Relay (Marks, Berquist, Finn DePuy, Carrou) and 200 Free Relay (McMillan, De Puy, Marks, and Carrou) also beat Hillsdale teams. Girls Varsity swimmers won all 8 races, led by Izzi Henig, who won two individual events (50 Free and 100 Free) and earned CCS cuts in both events. Haley Arrington earned a CCS time with her 500 Free event. Other individual winners were Kate Denend (200 Free), Mary Lane (200 IM), Sophie Murff (100 Butterfly), Nicole Dundas (100 Back), and Marissa Shepard (100 Breast). Varsity Girls won all three relays: 200 Medley relay (Haley Arrington, Faith Dunn, Claire Haldeman, Denend), and posted CCS times in both the 200 Free Relay (Henig, Dundas, Tori Rarick, Murff) and the 400 Free Relay (Denend, Dunn, Arrington, Henig). Varsity boys won all three relays and six individual events. Individual wins were posted by Nik Caryotakis (100 Breast), Jak Tedesco (100 Backstroke with a CCS time and 100 Butterfly), Vincent Busque (100 Free and 200 IM - earning a CCS Time), and Jack Beasley (200 Free). Relay events were won in the 200 Yard Relay (Alex Hakanson, Tedesco, Max Ferenczy, Busque), the 400 Free Relay - earning a CCS time (Busque, Tedesco, Beasley, and Ferenczy) and the 200 Medley (Beasley, Caryotakis, Mostyn Fero and Hakanson). Next up: Bears travel to Aragon on Thursday and the following week to Burlingame for their last dual meet. PAL Championships, CCS meet, and CIF meets wrap up the season in May. |
Girls Varsity Softball On Monday the Bears played San Francisco Mercy High, coming from behind to win 12-11. Taylor Conrad pitched for the Bears, going the distance for the complete-game victory. The Bears fell behind in the first inning 4-0 with some sloppy fielding, but then turned things around, allowing just 2 runs over the next 4 innings. Meanwhile, after a slow start on offense, the Bears scored 1 run in the 3rd inning on a base-loaded walk to Victoria Sanie. In the 4th inning, the Bears got 2 more runs on a delayed steal of home by Jess Burgos, followed by Delilah Kline, who also managed to sneak home from second base on the same play. The Bear offense came alive in the 5th inning, scoring 8 runs on 8 hits, to take an 11-6 lead. Florence Filiai had 3 RBI with 2 hits in the inning, with Kline driving in 2 runs with a single to left field, and Sanie also had 2 hits in the inning. Mercy scored 3 runs in the 6th and 2 more in the 7th to tie the game 11-11. In their half of the 7th, the Bears loaded the bases with no outs, winning the game on a walk to Sanie. On Friday, the Bears played Sequoia in their first meeting since the Cherokees dropped down into the Peninsula Ocean League. After a scoreless first inning, Sequoia bats came alive, scoring 11 runs in the 2nd inning and 4 more in the 3rd to take a 15-0 run-rule victory. Next week, the Bears have home games against Shasta (Daly City) on Monday, April 18 and El Camino on Thursday, April 21. On Wednesday, April 20 they travel to Mills. |
Girls Varsity Lacrosse
The Bears won both league games and had a strong showing against one of the state's top 10 teams. On Tuesday the team defeated Burlingame 14-12 at M-A. After a first half tie, Emma Easton scored two of her four goals and Hannah Shaw added a goal to put the Bears up by two. After another Burlingame goal, Annie Payne scored and then assisted Grace Tully with her seventh goal to put the Bears up by three. In the final five minutes, the Bears defense limited the Panthers to one goal to put the game away. Izzy Regonini had three assists and Madison Nelson added two. Izzy Carhardt and Grace Carlson combined for five defensive takeaways. Strong work in transition from Grace Chitouras. The Bears dominated all aspects of the game in a 19-3 rout of Sequoia on Friday evening. The running clock mercy rule was in effect 16 minutes into the game, as M-A went up 10-0. Tully and Easton each scored four goals. Carlson and Regonini each scored 3 and added two assists. Payne and Bea Geaghan-Breiner both scored and dominated the midfield. Freshman Hannah Shaw scored and had three self draws. Also scoring for the Bears was Katelyn Wiseman. On Saturday, the team dropped a non-league game to Granite Bay 17-12 on a hot afternoon in Placer County. Payne got the first goal and lead the Bears with four. The Grizzlies answered with three straight goals. Regonini and Tully scored to tie the game at 3 - both had three goals each in the game. Also scoring for the Bears were Easton and Carlson. Strong defense from Kelly Woods. This week the team visits Menlo School for a 4 pm game on Tuesday.

Boys Varsity Lacrosse
Last week the Bears split two games, coming up short against Sacred Heart Prep (2-10) while crushing Sequoia (18-2). Against SHP, M-A was tied 2-2 in the first quarter but could not keep pace as the game wore on. M-A's goal scorers were Trevor Brinton and Jack Hansen. In the Sequoia game, M-A made goals early and often: Jack Wolf (6), Robert Lane (3), Trystan Uphoff (2), Brinton (2), Hansen (2), Joey Lohmann (1), Andrew Ojeda (1) and Marcello Vial (1). Brinton assisted five of the goals. On defense, goalie Cooper Waymire came up big stopping 6 of 8 shots on goal. The Bears' smothering defense forced 10 turnovers: Brinton (3), Leo Cucinell (2), Lane (1), Uphoff (1), Anders Chiang (1), John Mills (1) and Michael Stark (1). The Bears were relentless in getting the ground balls: Mills (5), Cucinell (4), Ojeda (4), Brinton (3), Tommy Bohac (2), Lane (2), Lohmann (2), Uphoff (2), Wolf (2), Chiang, (2), Jack Maxwell (1), Max Miles (1) and Stark (1). The Bears are at home in action this week taking on Carlmont (Tuesday 4 pm) and Aragon (Friday 5:30 pm).

Boys Varsity Golf
The M-A Boys Golf team remains undefeated, with two more wins this past week. On Tuesday, the Bears faced Aragon at Sharon Heights, bringing home their lowest score of the season with 195 for M-A vs. 243 for Aragon. Freshman Jonathan Dicks led the way with the low round of 37, followed closely by senior Andrew Dignum, sophomore Bill Kirkpatrick, and junior Bryce Sevy who all scored a solid 39, with sophomore Leo Tuchman (41) and freshman Andre Wilkins (47) rounding out the scores. Thursday's match at Sharp Park against Terra Nova brought home more good news as the Bears remain undefeated with a winning score of 217-255. Top honors go to junior Sevy with a 40, Kirkpatrick scored 41, freshman Wilkins had a 44, and junior Aidan Liston came in with 47. Moving up from the JV team, and playing nicely, were sophomores Michael Sze, with a very respectable 45, and James Burke carding 49 to complete the team score.

Boys Varsity Baseball
On Wednesday the Varsity hosted Terra Nova. Senior Nick Olsen got the start on the mound and pitched a fantastic 6 1/3 innings allowing only three earned runs while striking out five Tiger hitters. Hunter Sevy then took over and pitched the next two innings before handing the ball off to Kris Liang, who pitched the final 1 1/3 innings. Both Sevy and Liang did a good job keeping the Tiger offense down. The Bear offense was lead by seniors Ryan Klapper and Bret Rodrigues who both had big three hit days. Klapper also drove in a run, and scored a run. Juniors Nick Prainito and Junior Oliver Bley had the Bears other two hits. The game went back and forth, spilling over into extra innings with the Bears losing a tough 10 inning game, 4-3. On Friday the Bears traveled to Pacifica to again play the Tigers of Terra Nova. Klapper threw a beautiful game allowing only one earned run over 5 1/3 innings. Freshman Daniel Burke then came in and pitched very well in getting the final two outs of the sixth inning. The offense was lead by Prainito who had two hits, but unfortunately, the Bears could only come up with two other hits, singles by Rodrigues and Klapper. The game was tied 1-1 going into the sixth inning, but the Tigers managed to get across two runs in the inning, to pick up a 3-1 win over the Bears.
|
Boys JV Baseball
This week, the JV Bears faced the division's first place team, the Terra Nova Tigers. On Wednesday, M-A traveled to Pacifica to play in the most beautiful setting of the season. Daniel Heimuli pitched all 7 innings with 3 strike outs. Bears had hits by Geo Deras, Heimuli, Connor Nathan, Joey Olshausen, Tony Siri, and Rio Zelaya and two hits by Pete Discher. Final Score M-A 4 Terra Nova 0. On Friday, M-A finished the series by hosting Terra Nova in the most exciting and best played game of the season. With the score tied at zero going into the bottom of the 7th, Siri, with two previous hits in the game, came to the plate. After another hard hit ball, he got on base and proceeded to steal 2nd. With two outs, Zelaya had a base hit to right field, driving Siri home for the win. Despite three dramatic and emotionally charged interruptions from the umpires -- in the 1st, 2nd and 7th innings resulting in the seemingly unwarranted ejection of M-A's Coach Matt Gilmer in the 2nd inning, (thank you to Peter Nathan for helping in his absence) -- Waller pitched another complete game with no walks and 4 strike outs. The Bears had no errors. Final score: M-A 1 Terra Nova 0. The Bears' complete shut out of the first place Tigers coupled with their win, during spring break, against St Ignatius of the West Catholic Baseball League, leaves the team poised for success in their last 3 weeks of the season.

Boys Varsity Tennis
The Varsity Boys Tennis Team remains undefeated in PAL League play, shutting out both league opponents this week by a team score of 7-0. In Tuesday's home match against Burlingame, Reed Fratt, Jeffrey Jorgensen, Timothee Berthier and Jake Andrew all won their singles matches in straight sets, as did the doubles teams of Chris Iyer/Theo Novak, Zach Ostrow/Joe Tripaldi, and Amaar Safdari/Julian Giomi. In Thursday's match against #2 in league Aragon, M-A came out on top in every match and won by a team score of 7-0. Eric Laderman moved up to play #4 singles and gutted out a hard fought 6-2, 7-6 victory. Jack Jensen had a nail biter at #3 singles, pulling out a third set tiebreaker victory. Fratt and Berthier won their singles matches in straight sets, as did the doubles teams of Iyer/Novak and Andrew/Ostrow. Tripaldi and Safdari squeaked out a 10-8 in the third set tiebreak win. Wednesday was a tougher day for M-A.They faced defending CCS Champion Menlo School with high hopes and gave them hard-fought close matches, but M-A lost by a team score of 1-6. The one victory for M-A was by Noah Milman and Camillo Saueressig at #2 doubles. The most exciting match of the day was at #1 singles. Casey Morris and Menlo's top player battled fiercely. Morris took the first set 6-4, then narrowly lost the second set 6-7. Next week, M-A finishes up the regular season with a match at Hillsdale on Monday and then on Tuesday the last home match of the season against San Mateo. Come out and cheer on the M-A tennis players!

Track & Field
The Bears had another impressive performance yesterday at the Serra Top 7 Invitational! The boys finished 6th overall out of more than 25 teams. However, the girls stole the show winning the meet and out scoring the 2nd place team by almost 40 points! The girls have now won the Serra Top 7 Invitational the last 4 years in a row! Between Thursday's meet at Aragon and yesterday's meet at Serra, there were many great performances worthy of mention:
- Maggie Hall had two great meets. She won the 100 and 200 at Aragon and also finished 2nd in the 100 at Serra and won the 200. Her time of 12.67 in the 100 places her 8th in M-A History and her time of 25.36 in the 200 places her 4th in school history.
- Kathryn Mohr won the pole vault at both meets and broke her own school at Serra with a vault of 12'4!
- Annalisa Crowe won both the 1600 and 800 at Serra. Her time of 2:14.31 also set a new meet record.
- Tatum Maines entered the M-A records in 3 events this week. She's now the 8th fastest in the 100 Hurdles, 4th in the 300 Hurdles and 9th in the long jump. What a week!
- Cat Depuy's 3200 meter time of 11:50.38 placed her 6th at Serra and 8th in school history.
- The girls also ran well in both relays at Serra. The 4x100 team of Charlotte Schroeder, Mohr, Maines, and Hall won the event. Additionally, the 4x400 team of Hall, Olivia Shane, Schroeder, and Crowe also won and set a meet record with a time of 4:03.63
- Terrance Matthews-Murphy had a great week throwing the discus. He won the event at Aragon and then again at Serra. His throw of 149'1" at Serra also places him 17th in school history.
- Freshman Luke Scandlyn had a great 1600 race at Serra, clocking a 4:36.27 which places him 14th in school history.
- Andrew Scoffone set personal records in both of his 300m Hurdles races this week.
- The boys 4x100 relay team of Marquise Reid, Chris Tinsley, Jordan Mims and Matthews-Murphy ran a season best 43.36 at Aragon. That time places them 15th best in school history.
