Guidance, College and Career Center Under Construction!

The Guidance Office and the College and Career Center will be renovated and under construction this spring and summer. While under construction, both locations will not be accessible for the remainder of the 2015-16 academic year. However, staff (Guidance Counselors, College Advisor and guidance support staff) will be temporarily relocated throughout the campus. Due to this situation, we strongly recommend scheduling an appointment if you need to meet with a Guidance Counselor. It's best to reach your student's Guidance Counselor via e-mail. While most of us do everything we can to reduce or avoid stress, Stanford psychologist Kelly McGonigal, PhD, delivers a startling message: Stress isn't all bad. New research shows that stress can make us stronger, smarter, and happier-if we learn how to embrace it.

Dr. Kelly McGonigal is a health psychologist and lecturer at Stanford University. As a pioneer in the field of "science-help," her mission is to translate insights from psychology and neuroscience into practical strategies that support personal well-being and strengthen communities.

She is the author of several books, including the international bestseller "The Willpower Instinct" and her latest book the "The Upside of Stress." Her 2013 TED talk, "How to Make Stress Your Friend," is one of the 20 Most Viewed TED talks of all time, with 10 million views.

 Girls Varsity Softball
On Tuesday, the Bears lost to Terra Nova 15-1 in 6 innings. The Bears played a solid game after falling behind early, committing just 2 errors in the first 5 innings against a strong Terra Nova offense. Taylor Conrad was the starting pitcher for the Bears, giving up 7 runs (5 earned) in the first 2 innings, but finished strong, allowing just one baserunner and one run over the next 2 innings. Victoria Sanie came on to pitch the final 2 innings for the Bears. The Bear offense put runners on base throughout the game, but couldn't capitalize on scoring opportunities, stranding 9 runners and giving up 3 outs to base-running mistakes. Sarah Scandalios led the Bears with 2 hits, and Sanie scored the Bears' only run on a sacrifice by Jess Burgos.

On Thursday, the Bears played Shasta High School (Daly City), winning 16-1 in a 4-innning run-rule victory. Conrad was in the circle again for the Bears, allowing just 1 run on 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6. The Bear offense was led by leadoff hitter Burgos, who had 3 hits and 1 RBI, Delilah Kline with 2 hits and 3 RBI, and Junior Varsity call-up Yureli Moran with a hit and 2 RBI.

The Bears' next game is at home on Monday, April 11, at 4 pm against Mercy, and on Friday, April 15, they play Sequoia in Redwood City.

 Boys Varsity Tennis
On Tuesday, the Varsity Boys Tennis Team blanked Woodside High by a team score of 7-0. Casey Morris, Reed Fratt, Axel Brenner, and Jeffrey Jorgensen scored decisive victories in singles, while the doubles teams of Chris Iyer / Theo Novak, Jake Andrew / Zach Ostrow, and Julian Giome/ Amaar Safdari all trounced their opponents in doubles.

Wednesday turned out to be a tougher day for the Bears. They suffered a rare loss to non-league powerhouse Monta Vista by a score of 5-2. The team match was much closer than the score since it came down to the final two deciding matches which ended in close third set defeats. M-A just now finally has all its players back from other sports, so players are still working their way back into top form and the team is still juggling its doubles combinations. The team feels confident it could beat Monta Vista and any other team by the time of CCS. In the Monta Vista match, the two victories were by Jeffrey Jorgensen at number 4 singles and Jack Jensen/  Timmy Berthier at number 3 doubles.

M-A's next match is after spring break on Tuesday, April 12 at home against Burlingame. Then on Wednesday, April 13 is the highly anticipated match of the season against defending CCS champs Menlo School at Menlo. The Bears believe this is the year they have a real shot at dismantling the Knights!  Come help cheer them on!

  Boys Varsity Baseball
On Wednesday the Varsity was on the road to take on Carlmont in league action. The Carlmont bats were hot as the first place Scots scored 11 runs in the first three innings. The Bears battled back with six runs of their own but ended up on the short end 15-6. Miles Conrad and James Sullivan each had two hit games. Other hits were by Matt Johnston, Bret Rodrigues, Nick Prainito and Kennedy Ojeda. RBI's were by Rodrigues, Sullivan, Ojeda and Mitch Eisenstat. On the mound the Bears used five pitchers including Nick Olson, Sullivan, Josh Bogomilsky, Sam Chazen, and Rodrigues.

On Thursday the Bears were back on the road for a make up tournament game against Oak Grove. The bats were quiet for the Bears as they only were able to manage two hits. Junior Kris Liang had three walks and scored the only Bears run, as the final score was Oak Grove 4 and M-A  1. Miles Conrad got his first start and did very well pitching out of some tough jams, while allowing no runs and striking out four. Freshman Daniel Burke followed and also did a nice job battling threw some tough situations. James Sullivan closed out the game.

On Friday the Bears again played league rival Carlmont, this time at home.  Senior Ryan Klapper led the offense with a long double to the right center field gap and a line drive single for a two hit game. Junior Nick Prainito also had a long ground rule double that barely missed being a home run. Senior Matt Johnston added a hit to the attack. Klapper and Kris Liang each pitched well, but Carlmont came out on top 6-1.

  Boys JV Baseball
On Wednesday, the JV Bears hosted PAL powerhouse, Carlmont High School. By the 5th inning, the Bears were losing 8 to 1 when the M-A bats came alive. 10 batters came to the plate in the 5th, with 5 M-A hits and 2 walks. The score at the end of 6 innings was 8-6. In the game, there were hits by Johnny Eisenstat, Daniel Heimuli, Connor Nathan, and Joey OlshausenGeo Deras and Rio Zelaya each had two hits and Anthony Waller had 3 hits.  M-A pitchers were Eisenstat, Jake Wang and Elliot Zeien. Final Score: M-A 6 - Carlmont 10.

Two days later, the Bears traveled to Carlmont to finish the series. With the Bears trailing 4 to 2 in the 7th inning, two outs, no one on base, Zelaya hit a single and then stole second. Waller followed with a single to drive him in. Hemuli then hit a single to put the tying run on second and the go-ahead run on first. Unfortunately, the Bears were not able to score, leaving two runners on base as the game ended. Other hits of the game: Nathan- 2 and Deras -1.  Waller pitched the entire game giving up no earned runs. Final Score: M-A 3 Carlmont 4.

The following day, the Bears traveled to play a non-league game against St Ignatius (San Francisco) and played their best defensive game of the season in combination with hitting that was on fire. Hemuli started on the mound with 5 strike outs in 3 2/3 innings. Zeien and Miles Conrad also pitched. Like earlier in the week, the Bears had another inning in which they brought 10 batters to the plate. In the game, there were hits by Michael Pariseau, Waller, and Zeien with two hits each by Conrad, Ben Ferrick, Heimuli, Tony Siri, and Zelaya. Final Score: M-A 10 St Ignatius 7. No JV baseball over spring break.

 Girls Varsity Lacrosse
The Girls won both games this week and head to Southern California for two games during Spring Break.

Tuesday at Castilleja was an overtime thriller. The Bears opened with a 3-0 run with Annie Payne intercepting and going coast to coast to score the first goal. She added a second and and Sally Carlson added the third on a free position. Casti scored twice. Grace Tully scored but the Gators answered and the Bears were up by a goal at the half. In the second half the teams traded goals until the Gators got their first lead with 8 minutes remaining. Izzy Regonini and Katelyn Wiseman scored but the Gators scored twice to keep the lead. With two minutes remaining, Carlson gave her fourth assist to Regonini who tied the game. In overtime, the Gators drove to goal, but M-A Goalie Samantha Gamez got her 11th save. Seven seconds later it was over. Gamez cleared to Carlson, who passed to Tully who assisted Regonini who ripped a shot into the lower left corner for the game winner. Final score 11-10. Strong work in midfield from Wiseman and Bea Geghan-Briener.

On Tuesday, the Girls played beautiful lacrosse in a 21-4 rout at Archbishop Mitty. The Bears were up 11-1 seventeen minutes into the game and the running clock mercy rule was in effect. The Bears were lead by Sally Carlson who had seven goals and five assists. Grace Tully had four goals and three assists. Izzy Regonini had three goals and three assists. Katelyn Wiseman added a goal and three assists. Also scoring were Annie Payne (2), Hannah Shaw (2), Madison Nelson and Emma Easton. Strong work in transition from Kelly Woods.

The Bears travel to Southern California for Spring Break this week to face Oak Park and Westlake High Schools. They return to local action hosting Burlingame on April 12th at 4pm.

  Boys Varsity Golf
The M-A Bears had another great week. On Monday, they were pretty anxious about facing Carlmont, whose reputation as the "unbeatable team" had everyone worried. Carlmont was the only other undefeated team in the league, but the Bears came through and beat them with a score of 212-230. Carlmont's home course, Crystal Springs, is a tough one to master, but M-A prevailed. Freshman Jonathan Dicks (41) and senior Andrew Dignum (41) led the way, followed closely by sophomores Leo Tuchman (42) and Bill Kirkpatrick (43), and juniors Bryce Sevy (45) and Maxwell Heller (46). Tuesday's match brought home another win as the boys faced Woodside High for the second time at Sharon Heights Country Club. The Bears were ready and squeaked by another win. Low scores came in from Dicks and Kirkpatrick (both with a 40), with Sevy (42), Tuchman (43), Heller (45), and junior Aidan Liston (46) rounding out the score. The tally? M-A 210; Woodside 227. The Bears are now 9-0 for the season and they're off to Indio to participate in the 2016 Champions' Invitational, hosted by Wilson High School. Go Bears!

Sequoia High School, Carrington Hall
1201 Brewster Avenue, Redwood City

Entrada gratis.
