Mentors Needed for At-Risk M-A Students Partnership For Success Program

Can you meet once a week with a student who needs help and support? It will be the most rewarding work you do! Some of our students need a regular adult presence to motivate them and help organize a path through M-A to graduation. This year 20 Mentors are working with Miki Cristerna, Student Services Coordinator, and students who are at risk of not graduating. The relationships we have developed have been incredibly rewarding, and beneficial to the students. We are expanding the program to reach more M-A students. You could make the difference whether or not they stay in school. No special knowledge needed - just a desire to make a difference. Meetings with your students are with another Mentor and usually 3-4 students at lunchtime on Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

For more information, contact Linda Fornaciari at laderalinda@mac.com or Lynne Clarence at lynneclarence@gmail.com.

Seating is limited! Register TODAY.

While most of us do everything we can to reduce or avoid stress, Stanford psychologist Kelly McGonigal, PhD, delivers a startling message: Stress isn't all bad. New research shows that stress can make us stronger, smarter, and happier-if we learn how to embrace it.

Dr. Kelly McGonigal is a health psychologist and lecturer at Stanford University. As a pioneer in the field of "science-help," her mission is to translate insights from psychology and neuroscience into practical strategies that support personal well-being and strengthen communities.

She is the author of several books, including the international bestseller "The Willpower Instinct" and her latest book the "The Upside of Stress." Her 2013 TED talk, "How to Make Stress Your Friend," is one of the 20 Most Viewed TED talks of all time, with 10 million views.

Simultaneous Spanish interpretation will be available.

Boys JV Lacrosse
This past Thursday the 5-1 JV lacrosse team beat Menlo School 13-7 in a stellar cross town match up. The seamless M-A squad had prodigious offensive production from multiple players led by "Jono" Schaff with four goals (playing while ill), Evan Siegel with three, Chris Disibio with three, Thomas Murff with two, and Brendan McLaughlin with one. Cameron Baker split goalie duties with Jack Schoenthaler with six and four saves respectively. The defense distinguished themselves collectively with disruptive schemes which led to many missed Menlo opportunities, led by Jack Tully and Christian Anderson. At the half, M-A had Menlo down 7-1. Menlo rallied in the second half with six goals and a game effort to close the gap. M-A continued to score, however. Siegel got the game ball by featuring his open field speed, intensity, and a focus on attacking the goal. This squad is one of the best in the Bay Area.

Last week the Bears started league play losing a hard fought battle against rival Menlo (6-7). M-A Senior Jack Maxwell scored within a minute of the starting faceoff, but Menlo responded with four unanswered goals. The Bears came roaring back as Senior Robert LaneFreshman Jack Hanson andJunior Jack Wolfe scoredto tie the game at 4-4 early in the third quarter. Menlo regained its scoring punch as it reestablished a 6-4 lead. M-A reenergized, and Hanson ripped a long distance goal while Junior Devon Dundas threaded through the defense for an up-close goal to even up the game. An untimely M-A penalty, with two minutes left in the game, gave Menlo a man-up opportunity; Menlo scored the winning goal. An ensuing all-out offensive M-A attack came close to scoring, but M-A ran out of time. Junior Cooper Waymire was stout in goal and stopped 23 of 30 shots. Freshman John Mills led the defensive effort with two forced turnovers. Our young varsity team is improving each and every game. Come see the mighty Bears take on Woodside at 7 pm this Wednesday at M-A.
