Mentors Needed for At-Risk M-A Students Partnership For Success Program
Can you meet once a week with a student who needs help and support? It will be the most rewarding work you do! Some of our students need a regular adult presence to motivate them and help organize a path through M-A to graduation. This year 20 Mentors are working with Miki Cristerna, Student Services Coordinator, and students who are at risk of not graduating. The relationships we have developed have been incredibly rewarding, and beneficial to the students. We are expanding the program to reach more M-A students. You could make the difference whether or not they stay in school. No special knowledge needed - just a desire to make a difference. Meetings with your students are with another Mentor and usually 3-4 students at lunchtime on Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

Senior Graduation Speeches
Senior parents, please ask your student to consider writing and delivering a graduation speech at the 2016 graduation ceremony on June 2. Delivering a graduation speech to classmates and the wider audience is a great way to represent the class of 2016. It is a tremendous honor and experience your student will not forget.
Interested students must attend a mandatory meeting March 22 at lunch in room B-4. The school will hold speech tryouts April 13 and April 14 after school in the Career Center. If you have questions, contact Karl Losekoot or J.C. Farr.

Boys Volleyball
M-A Boys Volleyball is off to a great preseason start. The week of March 7 the team took on Eastside prep beating them outright in the first two of three games. Jack Hinshaw, Courtney Weintz and Edward Falefa lead the team in kills. On Saturday March 12, the Bears had their work cut out for them in their first season's tournament where they went undefeated in 4 matches, defeating rival Westmont HS in the semi-final game, bringing the Bears to the championship match where they were defeated by De La Salle. A great finish in the tournament, the bears finished 2nd of 12 teams.
Girls Varsity Basketball
Girls Varsity Basketball's season ended Tuesday night in a 74-51 loss at St. Francis Sacramento in the semi-final round of the NorCal Tournament. The fourth seeded Bears struggled to break the top seeded Troubadours' press while St. Francis surged to a 35 point half time lead. The Bears mounted a comeback in the second half with Carly McLanahan hitting all 13 of her points, but it was too late. Mele Kailahi scored a team high 18 points with two assists, a steal, and a block in an incredible night for the Freshman. Strong defensive efforts from Erica Fischer and Sally Carlson. While the Girls do not get to hang the CCS D1 Championship banner they almost certainly would have won, they can take pride in being M-A's first basketball team to play in the CCS Open Division, repeating as PAL South and PAL Tournament Champions, and their 22 game win streak. The team bids farewell to its seniors, Sally Carlson, Annalisa Crowe, Jamie Kirkpatrick and Delilah Kline, who showed outstanding leadership and character. The Girls would like to thank their incredible coaching staff of Markisha Coleman and Haley Grossman as well as the support of the 6th Woman club, the Boosters, and the M-A community. With one of the youngest rosters in CCS, the Bears look forward to next season. Boys Varsity Tennis
The M-A Boys Tennis Team is once again off to a strong start. They are undefeated in PAL League play, continuing their undefeated streak dating back to 2013! The team already has dominating wins over league rivals Carlmont, Hillsdale, Woodside, Aragon and San Mateo. Junior Casey Morris leads the singles line-up, along with senior Axel Brenner, sophomore Jeffrey Jorgensen, freshman Timothee Berthier and senior Jack Jensen. Starting doubles players include seniors Eric Laderman, Nishan Relant and Noah Milman, junior Camillo Saueressig, sophomores Chris Iyer and Theo Novak, and freshmen Jake Andrew and Zach Ostrow. The team is deep with multiple other strong players who also contribute. Next week will be a busy week with a match at Burlingame on Monday, home match against Carlmont on Tuesday, non-league match at SHP on Wednesday, and match at Half Moon Bay on Thursday.
The Varsity baseball team opened league play this past Wednesday against arch rival Sacred Heart Prep. Nick Olson got the start on the hill for the Bears and pitched a very strong five and a third innings. The senior used mostly an explosive fastball, along with an occasional curve, to hold the Gators offense to only five hits. Senior Hunter Sevy then took the ball the remainder of the game, and shut the door on any chances of a Gator comeback. Sevy allowed only one hit and no runs, to earn the save. The win went to Olson. On the offensive side, Nick Prainito was on base three times with a booming triple and two walks. The Junior also scored
three runs and drove in one. Sophomore Miles Conrad also had a big game with two hits and an RBI. Other hits were by Matt Johnston, James Sullivan (who also scored and had an RBI), and sophomore Oliver Bley. Seniors Bret Rodrigues and Johnston also each added an RBI. Junior center fielder Kennedy Ojeda scored a run, and made a spectacular catch in the fourth inning up against the center field fence to rob what could have been a game tying home run. FINAL SCORE SHP 3 M-A 6
On Friday the Bears traveled to Sacred Heart to again take on the Gators. Senior Ryan Klapper got the ball and threw a very good 4 1/3 innings, allowing only 3 hits. Junior Kris Liang went the final 2 2/3 innings, pitching very well and also allowing only three hits. The two pitchers also led the Bears offense with Klapper getting two clutch hits and driving in three runs, and Liang also getting two hits and a walk. James Sullivan chipped in two hits of his own, as part of an eight hit Bears attack. Other hits were by Nick Prainito and Miles Conrad. Despite the very good pitching and offense, the Bears defense committed too many errors resulting in a close one run loss. FINAL SCORE M-A 7 SHP 8
Saturday the Bears closed the week with a tough loss to Washington High out of San Francisco. The Bears defense again allowed too many extra chances, this time for the visiting Eagles. Daniel Burke got his first varsity start and pitched very well for three innings. The Freshman was very composed and battled through a couple of tough jams. Sophomore Andrew Salinas then threw three very good innings of his own, with Senior Hunter Sevy throwing the final inning. Sevy also added two hits at the plate. The Bears offense managed to scatter only four other hits in route to the loss. FINAL SCORE Washington 8 M-A 0
Girls Varsity Lacrosse
The Bears continued their non-league season facing the two top teams in the SCVAL.
On Wednesday, the Bears hosted St. Francis. M-A started fast with Grace Tully and Annie Payne both scoring 3 of their 4 goals in the first half. Seniors Emma Roellig added a goal as did Sally Carlson, who joined the team 16 hours after the Basketball team's season ended in the NorCal semi-finals. The Lancers scored six first half goals to stay in the game. In the second half St. Francis went on a 5-0 run to give the Lancers a 2 point advantage. With 3 minutes remaining Carlson found Emma Easton in front of the net who scored, but the Lancers ran out the clock and held on to win 12-11. Strong defensive effort from Payne and Dorothy Aldridge.
On Friday night the Girls traveled to Palo Alto High. The first half was a defensive battle with strong defense from the Bears Izzy Carhardt and Grace Carlson who both had two takeaways. M-A goalie Samantha Gamez had six of her nine saves in the first half as the Bears limited the potent Viking attack to one goal in the first 24 minutes. Annie Payne and Emma Easton scored off assists from Sally Carlson. The Vikings scored and Grace Tully answered. With 18 seconds left in the half, Paly scored to bring the Vikings within a goal. The Vikings got two quick goals to start the second. Izzy Regonini added two goals and Payne and Tully got their second. But the Vikings scored four more and went up by one. Sally Carlson tied the game with six minutes left. After a long defensive stand an errant Paly shot ricocheted and just squeezed over the line to win the game for Palo Alto, 8-9.
With all five games this season decided by one goal in the final minutes the Bears are exciting! This week the Bears host Sacred Heart Prep to open WBAL play on Tuesday at 4 pm.
After the weekend's deluge, the soggy greens made for a challenging match, but the M-A Bears prevailed over the Woodside Wildcats, 208 to 239. Leading the way was Jonathan Dicks with a 39 in the 9-hole match, followed by Leo Tuchman (41), Bill Kirkpatrick (42), Aidan Liston (42), Maxwell Heller (44), and Andrew Dignum (45). After last week's match the Bears are 5-0.
The MA swim team had a great meet against Sequoia last Thursday. All four squads prevailed. A few of highlights from the meet included a few new CCS cuts, a couple of close wins, and a number of personal best times. All of our teams ended up winning, with the scores as follows:
JV Boys: 131/43; JV Girls: 141/43; Varsity Boys: 99/58; Varsity Girls: 129/37
Specific results will be reported next week. The Bears face Woodside High in their next meet, hoping to keep the undefeated PAL motion going!
Boys JV Baseball
The JV Bears opened league play this week by splitting a 2 game series against Sacred Heart. On Wednesday, the Bears traveled to Sacred Heart where Anthony Waller pitched all 7 innings of the game giving up no earned runs. M-A's hits of the game were a triple by Connor Nathan, a double by Daniel Heimuli, two singles by Anthony Waller and one single each by Pete Discher, Michael Pariseau and Jake Wang. Final Score: M-A 6 - Sacred Heart 1. On Friday, M-A hosted Sacred Heart with pitching by Elliott Zeien, Discher, Joey Olshausen and Johnny Eisenstat. Final Score: M-A 3 - Sacred Heart 9. Then, on Saturday, the Bears hosted Washington High School (San Francisco). Finn Bjerknes threw the first 5 innings for his first win of the season, Eisenstat got a hold and Wang got the save. The Bears' offensive game featured a hit by Heimuli to the fence and Geo Deras had two hits. Final Score: M-A 6 - Washington 4.
The Bears had a tough week, losing 3 games. On Tuesday, they opened League play against San Mateo. The Bears fell behind early, giving up numerous walks and committing several errors. On offense, the Bears had just one hit against strong San Mateo pitching, a single by
Victoria Sanie. San Mateo went on to win 16-0.
On Thursday, the Bears welcomed back shortstop Delilah Kline from the Varsity Basketball team, after their successful season and playoff run. Kline singled in her first at bat of the season, but that was all the offense the Bears could muster in another 16-0 loss, this time to Castilleja. Taylor Conrad started on the mound for the Bears and pitched well, getting 2 strikeouts and giving up only two walks in 3 innings. A diving catch for an out by Lotu Filiai in left field was the one of the few highlights for an otherwise error-prone Bear defense.
On Friday, the Bears traveled to El Camino, losing 11-1. Conrad was the starting pitcher again for the Bears, getting 4 strikeouts in 2 innings. Offensively, the Bears started to come alive, loading the bases in the second inning with 3 consecutive hits by L. Filiai, sister Florence Filiai, and Conrad, but the Bears couldn't capitalize. On defense, Jess Burgos made a nice catch of a line drive with the bases loaded, and made a quick throw to Kline at second base to complete an inning-ending double play that prevented at least 2 El Camino runs from scoring. This week, the Bears have 4:00 pm home games against St. Francis Watsonville on Monday, March 21, and Jefferson on Tuesday, March 22. On Friday, March 25, they travel to South San Francisco.
The Bears had quite a great showing at the Cupertino/De Anza Invitational yesterday. Many athletes set personal records (PR's) and many had top finishes in their events. Additionally, M-A even set 2 meet records! The boys finished 2nd overall out of 25 teams. The girls finished 8th, even without many of our seniors. Below are just a few of the great performances from yesterday:
The Girls 4x100 Team of Charlotte Schroeder, Kathyrn Mohr, and Logan and Tatum Maines started the meet off well with a 2nd place finish and a very good time of 51.26 for this early in the season. Mohr won the pole vault with a jump of 11 feet. Schroeder also had two great individual races in the hurdles. She set a PR in the 100 hurdles by almost a full second and then placed second in the 400 hurdles. Autriyana Hardy had a good 200 meter race finishing the sprint in 27.98 which places her on the M-A all time list (Top 20 performances in each event in school history).
There were only relays for the frosh/soph teams and our F/S boys ran extremely well in the relays. D'Arius Gipson, Gary Carter, Andrew Scott, and Kabir Lubana competed in both the 4x100 and Sprint Medley Relays. They had impressive 3rd place finishes in both. The F/S boys team of Andrew Tan, Nicholas Hafer, Scott MacDonald, and Luke Scandlyn won the Distance Medley Relay by over 11 seconds and set a new meet record by over 6 seconds! Bryce Rodgers finished 2nd in both the Shot Put and Discus. Jack Retterer had 2 PRs in the 200 and 400 finishing in the top 20 in both.
The Varsity Boys Relays had great early season showings. The 4x100 team of Marquise Reid, Jordan Mims, Daniel Malkary, and Terrance Matthews-Murphy finished 2nd with a solid early season time of 44.29. The 4x400 Team of Rohan Depuy, Reid, Matthews-Murphy and Mims finished 3rd with a time of 3:32.65. I normally don't single out one athlete, but Mims had one of the best meets in recent memory. As just stated, Mims helped the relays to 2nd and 3rd place finishes, but he also had some great individual performances. Mims won both the 200 and 400 as well! His time of 22.77 in the 200 is 18th fastest time in school history. His time of 49.58 in the 400 is the 4th fastest in school history and his time also set a meet record by over a full second. What a meet!

Boys Varsity Lacrosse
Last week the Bears had a final preseason tune-up prior to starting league play this week. The Bears, missing a few key players, fell to University High (6-11) on Friday night. Jack Wolf once again paced the Bears' offense scoring four goals while Robert Lane (1) and Jack Hanson (1) ripped the others. Trystan Uphoff assisted two of those goals. Drew Ojeda fought hard to win 12 of the 19 face-offs. Come cheer on your team on as the mighty Bears take on rival Menlo at 7PM this Thursday at M-A. Boys Varsity Basketball After finishing the CCS playoffs in the Open Division, the Bear Varsity Boys, with an automatic bid for the Norcal Playoffs, opened up against McClymonds High School at Merritt College on Saturday, March 12. Despite being outsized, the Bears played tough defense throughout the game. The Bears were down by 6 at half but closed to tie the game 40-40 after 3 quarters. Kai Winterling sparked the Bears with 11 points off the bench in the 4th quarter and the Bears won 57-53. For the game, Winterling led the Bears with 14 points. Blake Henry had 13, Eric Norton had 12, Lucas Fioretti had 9, Will Perrone added 4 key points and Christian Fioretti had 3 points. In the second round on Tuesday, the Bears met Bellarmine at the Bell's home court, seeking to avenge a heartbreaking 1 point loss earlier in the season. The Bears generally outplayed the Bells but couldn't put the game away. Lucas Fioretti hit a buzzer beater for the Bears at the end of the third quarter to give the Bears a nine point lead but the Bells closed quickly to get within 2 points. Clutch free throws down the stretch from Norton and Henry sealed the game, as the Bears won 50-46. For the game, Henry had 15 points and dominated the boards. Winterling had his second straight strong game off the bench with 14 points. Norton had 10 points, Lucas Fioretti had 7 points and Christian Fioretti had 4 points. In the Norcal Finals, the Bears traveled the Sleep Train Pavilion in Sacramento, home of the Sacramento Kings, to face Berkeley High School, who the Bears had beaten earlier in the season by 4 points. No MA boys team has played in a Norcal final since 1989 or 27 years. MA and Berkeley played a close back and forth game for the first half, with Berkeley leading 28-26 at the half. Christian Fioretti had 12 first half point for the Bears. Berkeley led by only 3 after 3 quarters 40-37 but Berkeley continued their hot shooting in the fourth to win by 10 61-51. For the game, Henry had 16 points and 7 rebounds. Christian Fioretti had 12 points and 7 assists. Norton had 9 points and 3 rebounds. Lucas Fioretti had 5 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Winterling had 4 points and 4 assists. Bradley Stillman had 3 points. The Bears end the season at 28-5. The team says goodbye to a great group of seniors: Tim Andersen, Christian Fioretti, Lucas Fioretti, Reed Fratt, Blake Henry, Kailen Kershner, and Bob Macdonald. Thanks to head coach Mike Molieri and his assistants Nick Fogel, Adhir Ravapati, Rich Branning Jr. and Rich Branning Sr. for an epic basketball journey this season.
Boys Varsity Volleyball M-A Boys Varsity Volleyball is off to a great start. The week of March 9, the team took on Eastside prep beating them outright in the first two of three games. Jack Hinshaw, Courtney Weintz and Edward Falefa lead the team in kills.
Saturday, March 12, the bears had their work cut out for them in their first season's tournament where they went undefeated in 4 matches, defeating rival Westmont HS in the semi final game, bringing the Bears to the championship match where they were defeated by De La Salle. A great finish in the tournament, the Bears finished 2nd of 12 teams.
This last week marked the kick off of league games and the Bears defeated both Hilldale and Aragon High school in 3-0 matches. Next week the Bears face San Mateo High School in another league match on Wednesday at 6 pm at San Mateo High.

Estimados estudiantes y familias,

Karl Losekoot o a J.C. Farr.
