Girls Varsity Basketball
The girls varsity basketball team won both their NorCal Playoff games last week and advance to the Semi-Finals at St. Francis (Sacramento) on Tuesday, March 15, at 7 pm.
On Wednesday at M-A, the Girls defeated George Washington (San Francisco) 56-44 in the opening round of the NorCal Division 1 Tournament. The Bears led the entire game as the Eagles struggled to defend the Bears post players. Greer Hoyem lead the Bears with 22 points. Ofa Sili added 9 and Megan Sparrow had 7. The Eagles closed the gap to eight points in the second quarter, but that was as close as they would get. In the second half the Bears pulled away with Annalisa Crowe hitting a pair of threes as the Bears cruised to victory.
On Saturday night at M-A the Girls defeated Heritage (Brentwood) 71-46. The Patriots started with an aggressive defense and fast-paced offense that kept them in the game for the first half which finished with Menlo-Atherton up 31-29. The Bears were led in the first two quarters by sophomore Carly McLanahan who had 9 points shooting outside the arc and was joined by freshman Mele Kailahi, who also added a 3 and finished the half with 7 points. The Bears also got help from the inside with junior Ofa Sili scoring 5 and sophomore Greer Hoyem adding 5 more. The second half was a different story, with the Bears coming out fast and outscoring the Patriots 24-10 in the 3rd quarter. The Bears got 11 from Hoyem and played aggressive defense led by juniors Ilana Bear and Megan Sparrow who forced multiple turnovers. Hoyem finished the game with 25, followed by McLanahan and Kailahi who both finished with 14. On Monday Coach Taylor and the team traveled to Peninsula Country Club in San Mateo to meet the Aragon Dons. On this cold, windy, blustery day, they won their 3rd straight match with a total of 209 strokes to Aragon's 241. Leading the way was Maxwell Heller with a great score of 37 in the 9-hole event. Next was Leo Tuchman (41), Bill Kirkpatrick (43), Jonathan Dicks (44), Andrew Dignum (44), and Andre Wilkins (51). After Tuesday's match against a very tough Burlingame Panthers team at Sharon Heights Country Club the team was 4-0. Despite the wet conditions, the Bears won 201 to 210. Dicks was low scorer with a 34, closely followed by Kirkpatrick with a 35. Heller (42), Dignum (45), Tuchman (45), and Aidan Liston (48) all played a part in winning over a team that has, historically, been an extremely tough opponent. Girls Varsity LacrosseThe Bears split a pair of non-league games last week. On Wednesday the Girls lost 12-13 at Redwood High School (Larkspur). M-A opened a 5-3 half time lead with Grace Tully scoring two of her four goals. In the second, the Bears pushed their lead to three with Annie Payne scoring three of her four goals on the day. However, in the final 2 minutes, Redwood went on a 4-0 run to win the game. On Saturday the Bears hosed University High (San Francisco). In the first few minutes Grace Tully scored for the Bears and the Red Devils equalized. The game settled into a defensive battle for the next 10 minutes with the Bears Elena Fox and Kelly Woods both making defensive stops and goalie Samantha Gamez getting her second of three first half saves. The Bears finally broke through on a free position shot from Tully. Tully scored two more and Izzy Regonini assisted Emma Easton as the Bears rolled off four goals in 2 minutes. In the second half Easton scored two more goals but University scored the final three goals to bring the Red Devils within a point with six second remaining. The Bears won the subsequent draw and hung on for the win 7-6. With the win the Bears improve to 2-1 with all three games being decided by a point in the final seconds. Next week the Bears host St. Francis for a 4 pm game on Wednesday and travel to Palo Alto High for a 5:30 pm game on Friday. Boys Varsity LacrosseThe Bears entered this year's season with a new look as many freshman, sophomores and transfers joined the team. During the past week, the Bears split preseason games against Palo Alto (7-12) and Mountain View (10-5). On Tuesday, M-A visited Palo Alto and could not quite catch the Vikings as the Bears trailed for most of the game. Jack Wolf paced the Bears' attack scoring three goals while Jack Maxwell (2), Robert Lane (1) and Trystan Uphoff (1) buried the other goals. Leading ground ball collectors were Drew Ojeda (5), Lane (4), John Mills (4), and Wolf (4). On Thursday, M-A outplayed Mountain View on both sides of the field. Cooper Waymire's outstanding goal tending was critical to the win (9 saved shots on goal). Defenseman Dante Paquin forced two turnovers. And M-A's attack was relentless with the scorers being Wolf (7), Uphoff (2) and Jack Hansen (1). Ojeda (8), Lane (5) and Leo Cucinell (4) led the ground ball efforts. This coming week, the preseason continues as the Bears take on University High at 5pm on Friday at M-A.
With 2 rainouts, the Bears played only one game last week, facing the Alma Heights Eagles on Tuesday. After allowing the first two Eagles hitters to score, the Bears turned things around and held Alma Heights scoreless for the rest of the game. Pitchers Florence Filiai and Victoria Sanie combined to hold the Eagles to just one hit. On offense, the Bears were led by F. Filiai with 3 RBI and Sarah Scandalios with 2 RBI and benefitted from numerous walks given up by Eagles pitchers, cruising to a 20-2 run rule victory in 3 innings. This week the Bears begin League play, with home games against San Mateo on Tuesday, March 15 and Castilleja on Thursday, March 17, and a road game against El Camino on Friday.
On Saturday February 27, the Bears hosted El Camino, and Kris Liang got his first varsity start on the mound. The Junior did very well, going five innings and allowing no earned runs while striking out two. Senior Nick Olsen closed out the game with two straight strikeouts.
On the offensive end the Bears were lead by senior Kevin Shimbo who had two hits, along with junior Nick Prainito who had a triple. Senior Bret Rodrigues and junior James Sullivan each added a hit to the attack. FINAL SCORE: El Camino 1 M-A 5 On Wednesday March 2, the Bears again were at home, this time hosting Riordan High out of San Francisco. Ryan Klapper got his second start of the season and was outstanding and in complete control the entire way. The senior notched the Bears first complete game of the season, while allowing only one earned run and striking out four. Senior catcher Matt Johnston put on a clinic behind the plate throwing out three Riordan runners trying to steal bases. At the plate the team managed only to scatter five singles, with seniors Klapper, Johnston, Rodrigues along with junior Oliver Bley and sophomore Miles Conrad, getting the hits. FINAL SCORE: Riordan 1 M-A 4 The Bears were back at it on Wednesday March 9 as they traveled down to Westmont and into a pitchers duel. Senior Nick Olson threw a dominating four innings allowing only one earned run. Freshman Daniel Burke then took the mound in relief and did a fantastic job, retiring six Warrior hitters while allowing no hits, and no runs. The Bears offense could only muster two hits and lost a close one. FINAL SCORE: M-A 0 Westmont 1 This past Friday the Bears traveled down to Leland High for a tournament game against Mitty. The Bears again got very strong pitching form Kris Liang (starter) and Hunter Sevy (in relief), and also strong defense. The offense though could only produce four hits, with a long double by Senior Bret Rodrigues and singles by senior Matt Johston, junior Oliver Bley, and sophomore Miles Conrad. FINAL SCORE: M-A 1 Mitty 4 The team starts league play against rival Sacred Heart Prep on Wednesday, March 16, at 4 pm Come fill the stands and support the team!
Boys JV Baseball
The JV Bears started the week by hosting Westmont High School (Campbell) with the most exciting game of the season to date. Both teams were scoreless through 3 innings when, in the top of the 4th, Westmont loaded the bases with one out. Pitcher, Anthony Waller forced each of the next two batters, in each case with two strikes, to hit comebackers, throwing the lead runner out at the plate and then throwing the second batter out at first. The Bears got out of the inning with no runs scored by Westmont. In the bottom of the fourth, it was the Bears' turn to load the bases. Michael Pariseau led off the inning with a walk, Joey Olshausen was hit by a pitch and Jake Wang had a hit. With the next batter in the box, Pariseau scored from 3rd on a passed ball for the first run of the game (and only run of the inning). In the top of the 5th, Westmont had one unearned run to tie the game. By the bottom of the 7th, the score remained 1 to 1 when Rio Zelaya had his second hit of the game, Geo Deras had his second hit of the game and Daniel Heimuli walked which left the Bears with loaded bases and one out. Pariseau came to the plate and hit a hard ground ball to 3rd base and the runner on 3rd ( Zelaya) came home for the winning run. Final Score M-A 2 - Westmont 1. On Thursday, the JV Bears hosted Pioneer High School (Almaden, San Jose). The game started under light sprinkles and by the top of the 4th, it was pouring rain when the game was called. The team was scheduled to play at Half Moon Bay HS on Friday afternoon which was cancelled on Friday morning due to the weather forecast in Half Moon Bay for later in the day.
Led by new coach Marco Paglialunga, the JV Boys Volleyball team is off to a fantastic start! The Bears are 4 and 2, after exciting wins against The Kings Academy, Serra, James Lick and Eastside Prep. In their match against Eastside Prep on Wednesday, the Bears won the first game 25-16, highlighted by a kill from junior Soane Vainikolo. The second game was a nailbiter, but the Bears prevailed, with junior Spencer Monague-Alamin delivering two aces and junior Andrew Baigorria with 2 kills. The Bears have a mighty week coming up, with a match at home against Sacred Heart on March 14 and at Bellarmine on March 16. It's only the second year for boys volleyball at MA and, if you haven't seen them play yet, you are missing something special. Come out on Monday and let's have the Gators listen to the MA Bears roar!
Swimming All four of the Menlo-Atherton swim squads won their first PAL league meet against San Mateo high school. The varsity girls posted 97 points to 72, varsity boys won by 112 points to 40, JV girls won 140 to 38 points, and JV boys had a huge win, posting 136 points to 14 against San Mateo.

Farr.
