Sophomore College Parent Night
Sophomore College Parent Night will be on Tuesday, March 15, at 6:30 pm, in the M-A Library. This will be an informational night for parents only. Simultaneous translation in Spanish is available. In an email that was sent directly to grade 10 parents, there is a link to a Google form if you would like to submit questions in advance of this event. Although I can't guarantee that we'll have time to answer all submitted questions, I will try to prioritize those that may have great interest and relevance to many families.
If you did not receive the email that went directly to Sophomore parents, you can add yourself as a parent in your child's Naviance account. Log in, click on the "About Me" tab, click on "Profile," click on "Add New Parent" under the "parents" section. Type in your name and email address at minimum, and click on "Add Parent."

Girls Varsity Soccer - CCS Champs!
The M-A girls soccer team won its first ever CCS title on Saturday night in a torrential downpour with winds nearing 30 mph. The Bears fell behind 0-2 in the first half when the #10 seeded Branham Bruins were attacking into the fierce wind. The Bears dominated the Bruins in the 2nd half when it was our turn to take advantage of the wind, but didn't find the net until there were only 10 minutes left in the game, when senior captain Sarah McLeod hit a free kick from around 40 yards out. A mere 4 minutes later, McLeod hit the back of the net a second time, and it was all tied up. With less than 2 minutes left in regulation, and the Bears not wanting to go to overtime, sophomore Josephine Cotto hit the game winner with an amazing strike from the left corner of the penalty box that floated over the goalkeeper's outstretched arms. The Bears finish the season 15-4-3, with their first CCS title ever. Go Bears!

 Girls Varsity Basketball
On Tuesday, the Bears hosted Los Gatos, the SCVAL Champions and the eighth seed in the CCS Open Division. The Bears jumped out to a 7-2 lead. However the Wildcats hit five first half 3s and held M-A scoreless for six minutes to take a 10 point lead at the half. In the second half Ilana Baer and Greer Hoyem led a Bears comeback. Hoyem tied the game with 48 seconds remaining. The Wildcats converted a free throw with 17 seconds to go. With 4 seconds left, the Bears inbounded and sunk a three just after the buzzer, and Los Gatos hung on for the win  47-46. While a disappointing finish, all Open Division teams automatically qualify for the NorCal Tournament. The Bears received the fourth seed in the Division 1 NorCal tournament and will host Washington (San Francisco) at 7 pm on Wednesday at M-A.

 Boys Basketball
After a first round loss to Mitty in the Open Division of CCS, the Bears hosted the Santa Cruz Cardinals at M-A in the second round of the Consolation Bracket of the CCS Open Division. M-A started fast, led by Christian Fioretti's 13 first half points along with 6 from Lucas Fioretti and Blake Henry, to help M-A to a 38-26 first half lead. M-A kept up the pace and pressure to lead 59-42 after lead and eased home with a 65-50 win. Henry and C. Fioretti each had 13 for the Bears and Fioretti had 7 assists. Reed Fratt and Eric Norton had 10 points and L. Fioretti had 7 on 2 3s.

In the rubber match between M-A and Half Moon Bay in the finals of the Open CCS Consolation Bracket, the Cougars ran away with a 61-41 win in their third meeting of the season. Half Moon Bay play a trapping defense and shot over 85% in the first half to take a 38-19 halftime lead. HMB went on an 18-0 run in the first half. M-A got within 8 points in the third quarter but HMB hit a half court shot to extend their lead to 11 after 3. HMB went on a 4th quarter run and eventually won by 20. For the Bears, L. Fioretti had 11 points on 3 3's. Henry had 10 points, Fratt had 7 points and C. Fioretti had 6. Norton had 4 points.

M-A goes to 26-4 on the season. The Bears now await their seeding for the NorCal division 1 tournament, which start on Wednesday. Come out and support the Bears in their final push of the season.

  Boys Varsity Golf
The Bears golf team is looking good. Leap Year's additional day meant one more day of prep for the 2016 season kickoff at Sharon Heights Country Club on March 1. It paid off! Bear linksters took on the Terra Nova Tigers of Pacifica and won with a total of 204 strokes to T-N's 295. That's a pretty big margin, and bodes well for future matches. Leading the way with low rounds for M-A were sophomore Bill Kirkpatrick and freshmen Jonathan Dicks and Andre Wilkins. Each turned in a score of 39 in the 9-hole match at M-A's home course. Making the 91-stroke margin stick were junior Maxwell Heller (42), senior Andrew Dignum (45) and junior Aidan Liston (48).

On Thursday, March 3, the team headed to Green Hills Country Club in Millbrae for a match against the Mills Vikings. M-A rocked the fairways for their 2nd straight victory. The final tally gave the Bears a 208 score to Mills' 248. Finishing 1-2-3 for M-A were Dicks with a 9-hole score of 38, Kirkpatrick with a 39, and Leo Tuchman with a 42. Wilkins (44), Maxwell Heller (45) and Liston (52) helped add to the margin of victory.

 Girls Varsity Lacrosse
The Bears opened non-league play Friday night with a thrilling 9-8 overtime victory under the lights at Gunn. In the first half Bea Geaghan-Breiner and Katelyn Wiseman scored and Grace Tully added a two. The Titans answered and the first half ended in a 4-4 tie. The Bears opened the second half with a 3-0 run with Annie Payne scoring a pair. But that was the biggest M-A lead of the night as the Titans came back storming back. With 18 seconds remaining Gunn tied the game at 8. In sudden death overtime, the Bears went right to work. Hannah Shaw grabbed her fourth self draw of the game. She transitioned to Tully who gave her third assist to Emma Easton who ripped the winner into the top right corner of the net 20 seconds into OT for her third goal on the night. Goalie Allie Bayne had 5 saves.

This week the team travels to Redwood High (Larkspur) for a 4 pm game on Wednesday and hosts University High (SF) at 1 pm on Saturday

 M-A Wrestling
Last weekend Chelsea Wilson, Folashade Akinola, Abby Ericson represented the M-A wrestling team at the CIF CA State Championships. Wilson pinned her opponents in Championship Round 1, 2, & 3 to advance to the semi-finals. She wrestled Sariyah Jones the returning state champion and national champion from Enoch in the semis and was held off from advancing with a score of (2-4). Wilson then proceeded to win in the consolation semis to advance to the 3rd place championships where she tech-pinned (15-0 + pinned) her opponent. Wilson placed 3rd, making her M-A's highest placed state wrestler ever. She also earned the Wrestling with Honor award for her performance throughout the day, a prestigious award by the CIF committee for her outstanding performance and on the mat sportsmanship.

The talented freshmen Akinola advanced to the quarters and was caught with an unexpected pin. She entered consolations and avoided elimination by advancing by decision over junior Palo Alto's Sara Aguilar. She was pinned in the consolation semis, but in match 7 controlled the match Folasha-style and earned a major decision (13-3) to take 7th place. She was the only freshmen in her weight class to place at this State competition. Ericson, a true first year freshmen who had no prior experience to wrestling prior to November, earned her team a much needed pin to secure 11th place. By qualifying and winning a match at the state level competition she places herself as one of the top 20 wrestlers in the state. The team finished 11 out of 198 schools.

 M-A Swimming
M-A swimmers started the season strong. The JV swim team attended an invitational meet at St. Francis High School last week with all the top schools in the area. Junior Allison Collins scored 4.5 points in the 100 Freestyle in a tie for 6th place. The JV girls 200 yard medley relay team (Molly Banks, Collins, Katelynn Fichou, and Brynn Williams) placed in 13th out of 23 teams, scoring 6 points for the Bears. The JV Boys 200 medley relay team (Shon Alimukhanedov, William Sachson and Matthias Guegler) placed 20th out of 27 teams, scoring 2 points for the Bears. The JV girls scored another 6 points with a 10th place win in the 200 Free Relay consisting of Collins, Williams, Banks, and Maddie Sonderby. The Boys JV 200 Free Relay won 4 points (Tyler Lewis, Cooper Gran, Sachson, and Guegler). Overall, the JV girls came in 7th place out of 23 teams and the JV Boys placed 11th out of 27 teams. Swimming against the top schools in the area, this meet was a great start for the JV team.

The Varsity team's first meet was against Menlo last Wednesday. The girls team easily beat Menlo with a total score of 120 to 50. Boys tied Menlo with 85 points for each team. Big individual wins for the girls team were made by Nicole Dundas (200 and 400 freestyle), Faith Dunn (200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke), Kate Denend (50 free), Haley Arrington (100 backstroke), and Sophie Murff (100 freestyle). Girls beat Menlo in 3 relays, including the 200 medley relay (Arrington, Dunn, Maddie Worden, Denend), the 200 free relay (Murff, Worden, Denend, Dundas), and the 400 free relay (Murff, Arrington, Dunn, Dundas).

Boys individual event winners were Vincent Busque (50 free), Jak Tedesco (100 butterfly), Max Ferenczy (400 free) and Nik Caryotakis (100 breaststroke). Boys relay winning events were 200 medley relay (Tedesco, Caryotakis, River Weston, Busque), and the 200 free relay (Busque, Caryotakis, Ferenczy, Alex Hakanson). The varsity and JV teams both face their first league opponents on March 10 swimming against San Mateo High School at M-A. Come out and cheer on the aqua bears after school!

  Girls Varsity Softball
The Bears traveled to Independence High School in San Jose to face the Seventy-Sixers on Wednesday. Senior Co-Captain Taylor Conrad started on the mound for the Bears, but Independence came out swinging and jumped ahead early. Victoria Sanie came on to pitch a scoreless 3rd, but ultimately the Bears were done in by strong Sixer hitting and some shaky defensive play, losing 12-2.

On offense, the Bears got timely hitting and earned six walks, putting at least 2 runners on base in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, but had trouble capitalizing. In the third, the Bears had consecutive hits by Maddie Moya, leadoff hitter Jessie Burgos, and Sarah Scandalios, but were unable to score. The Bears again threatened to get back into the game in the fourth, starting with a leadoff walk to Monika Gutierrez and eventually loading the bases with a walk to Bailey Lentz and a sharp single by Sai Sema, but the Bears were only able to plate one run on a walk to Bella Anaya before Independence got out of the inning with 2 force outs at home and a strike out. In the fifth inning, the Bears once again loaded the bases on a solid singe to center by Scandalios followed by two walks, but were only able to add one more run on an infield hit by Sanie. The Bears' first home game is on Tuesday, March 6, at 4:00 pm against Alma Heights.

  Boys JV Baseball
MA's JV baseball team played 3 away games this week. On Monday, Anthony Waller pitched all 7 innings at Woodside High School giving up one earned run and no walks. The Bears were on fire in the 4th, scoring all five of their runs. Highlights of the 4th included a bunt by Jake Wang to drive in a run, a bunt by the lead off hitter, Connor Nathan to load the bases, a single by Joey Olshausen and a double by Geo Deras. Final Score:  M-A 5 - Woodside 4.  On Wednesday, the Bears traveled to Archbishop Riordan in San Francisco. Finn Bjerknes pitched the first two innings when Elliott Zeien took over and pitched a no hitter for the remainder of the game. Final Score: M-A 0 - Riordan 2. And, on Friday, the Bears traveled to Leland High School in San Jose for a wet and muddy game. Final Score: M-A 1 - Leland 11.

Farr.

Ayude a M-A ATHLETICS
