Dear Students, Families and Community,
As we head into the last quarter of the school year, M-A is buzzing with a focus on instruction and many activities. The four administrators will be speaking to seniors during SS&R to remind them to stay focused, finish strong, and make good decisions as they finish their last semester of high school.
Update on the Teen Sleep Program
Menlo-Atherton has been involved with the Teen Sleep program for the last eight years thanks to our wonderful volunteer, Maggie Betsock, who devotes herself to organizing the program each year. Last week, a group of M-A students who signed up to be sleep ambassadors visited the Stanford Sleep and Dreams class. This week, Stanford students from the class made presentations to all of our 9th-grade students about the importance of sleep. Finally, during our next Feel Good Friday (extended lunch with various "stress" free activities for students to enjoy as well as a farmer's market) on March 11, our sleep ambassadors will have an activity on teen sleep. CBS news is doing a story on the program and was present for the ambassador visit to the Stanford class, filmed the presentation in Linda Schloss' 5th-period class this week, and will speak to students at M-A on Feel Good Friday.
By the way, you may also have heard from excited students and Stanford football fans that Christian McCaffrey, running back for Stanford and Heisman trophy nominee, was on campus as one of the teen sleep presenters.
Carpooling, Biking, Walking and Taking Public Transportation to School
We are encouraging students with weekly incentives to carpool, bike, walk or take public transportation to and from school given the impact of surrounding traffic and to be friendlier to the environment. We will be working with SamTrans to increase access, continue to provide bus passes to students, and soon will be adding more bike racks in our Oak Grove lot. Eventually, we will relocate bike parking along Ringwood to be accessible to students. We will also be looking for parent and student input on the best way to coordinate carpools using an app like "Carpool-School Edition." Any suggestions welcome!

Girls Varsity Soccer
M-A pressured Gunn in the first game of CCS on 2/24/16 and walked away with a 3-0 win! Although things started out slowly in the first half, Mara Cavallaro was able to slam the ball into the net for a goal after a rebound on a shot by Katie Guenin. Defensive players Ali Sivilotti, Molly Briggs, and Kasey Love controlled the pace of the game and were very helpful in the first half. In the second half, M-A went up to 2-0 with an own goal by Gunn and an assist on that by Briggs. The third goal was hammered in by Sarah McLeod, after a corner kick by Margaret Child, who then crossed it over. M-A finished the game at 3-0 with a win for their first CCS game.
The Bears were off to a slow start at home against the visiting Piedmont Hills Pirates in the round 2 quarterfinal CCS game on 2/27/16, allowing a Pirates goal in the mid first-half on a defensive miscue. They quickly redeemed themselves just before the half with a direct kick by freshman Yara Gomez, which senior McLeod drilled into the net, tying the game at 1-1 at the half. The Bears played well in the second half, with strong defense by senior Love, juniors Sivilotti and Allison Galbraith, freshman Grace Brieger, and sophomore keeper Breanna Sandoval. The mid-field (juniors Alissa McNerney, Nicole Salz, and Child, McLeod and Gomez) played consistently, preventing the Pirates from converting any goal attempts. McCleod was fouled in the box and converted the penalty kick into the second goal. Forwards (junior Guenin, sophomore Cavallaro, and seniors Talia Missan and Zoe Ford) had several great shots on goal that were just outside the box or deflected by the Pirates keeper. The Bears stayed strong, winning the game 2-1. They stand at 10-2-2 in the league, 14-4-2 overall and will play St Ignatius (SF) on Wednesday March 2 at 4:30 pm at Burlingame High School. Boys Varsity Basketball
After a successful regular season as champions and a post season tournament win in the PAL tournament, the M-A Varsity boys were invited to the Open Division of the CCS playoffs and selected as a #4 seed. No public school has ever won an open game since the open was established in 2012.
On Friday night, the 25-2 Bear boys faced #5 seed Mitty from the WCAL at Piedmont Hills High School. In a relatively low scoring, physical game, the Bears and Lions ended up tied after the first quarter 12-12. M-A gained a 7 point advantage in the second quarter but Mitty closed to within 2 at the half 24-22. M-A maintained a 1 point lead through 3 but Mitty used their inside game and size to outscore the Bears in the fourth and win by five at 47-42. Blake Henry led the Bears with 13 points and 7 rebounds. Christian Fioretti had 11 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists and Eric Norton had 8 points and 3 rebounds. Lucas Fioretti had 3 points, 5 steals and 3 rebounds. Kai Winterling added 3 points while Reed Fratt and Kailen Kershner each added 2. The team overall played strong defense! The Bears will play Santa Cruz in the Consolation Bracket at 7 pm on Tuesday at M-A. The team also has an automatic bid to Norcals, which start the following week. So the team is not done yet!
In other team news, Eric Norton was selected as the MVP of the PAL South Division. He, Christian Fioretti and Lucas Fioretti were selected to the First Team All League team.
Blake Henry was selected to second team All-League. A shout out to the M-A Parents and Sixth Man Club, who once again traveled well and showed up in droves to support the team. The noise and support from our fans far outstripped our rivals student support!
The 2016 Varsity Baseball season started on Tuesday when the Bears went on a short road trip across town to visit former league rival Menlo School. Senior Nick Olson got the start on the mound and went five strong innings giving up only two earned runs on seven hits. Hunter Sevy came on in relief and pitched the sixth inning and retired three straight batters. On the offensive end, seniors Matt Johnston and Ryan Klapper each had two hits (a single and a double). Johnston had the only RBI. FINAL SCORE: M-A 1; Menlo 4.
On Thursday the Bears hosted Woodside. It was Klapper's turn on the hill, and the senior did not disappoint. Combining a fastball, a curve and an off speed pitch, Klapper went five innings and struck out six Wild Cat batters. Senior Josh Bogomilsky relived Klapper in the sixth, and then Sevy took the ball and closed out the sixth and the seventh, for his first win of the season. The Bears bats came alive in an explosive sixth inning that saw ten hitters come to the plate with six of them scoring. The big blasts were Junior Kris Liang's two strike bases loaded 3 RBI double, and senior Bret Rodrigues' two RBI double. Rodrigues also added a single for a two hit day, and Junior short stop Nick Prainito had three hits. Prainito also scored two runs, as did junior 2B Oliver Bley. FINAL SCORE: Woodside 5; M-A 8.
Girls Varsity Basketball
Come watch the Girls and Boys CCS Games starting at 5:30 on Tuesday at M-A! After winning the PAL Championship last Saturday, the girls became the first basketball team in M-A history to be selected to play in the CCS Open Division Tournament. The Open division of CCS is reserved for the top 8 teams across all 5 divisions of CCS. All Open Division teams automatically qualify for the NorCal Tournament.
In the opening round on Friday night, M-A, the fifth seed, faced Valley Christian, the fourth seed, in a game held at Wilcox High School. The Warriors jumped out to a 9-1 lead as the Bears quickly discovered that the CCS Open Division is not the PAL. However, the Bears learn fast and after three Carly McLanahan 3's, M-A briefly took the lead early in the second quarter. In the second and third quarters, Valley Christian, honed by facing some of the best teams in the state in the WCAL, pushed their lead to 15 points. In the final 12 minutes the Bears mounted a comeback. Ilana Baer scored 4 and had three steals as the Bears made six consecutive defensive stops. Greer Hoyem and Megan Sparrow each added 4 points. They had 13 and 9 points respectively on the night. With 44 seconds remaining, McLanahan was blatantly fouled on a potential game tying three, but did not get the call. The Warriors hit four consecutive foul shots and put the game away, 49-42. With the loss the Bears move to the consolation bracket where they will host the other public school in the Open Division, Los Gatos, the eighth seed on Tuesday at 5:30 at M-A.
At the Central Coast Section Tournament on Saturday Feb. 20 the team represented the central coast section with Niko Ozden, Eric Andreae, and Makisi Tonga for the boys and Lauren Fuller, Bianca Vargas, Chelsea Wilson, Angie Bautista, Lauren McDonnell, Paola Ramirez, Folashade Akinola, Catarina Carvahlo, Abby Ericson, and Livienna Lie for the girls. Ozden earned 6 team points, Tonga earned 4 team points, Fuller earned 7 team points, Wilson earned 32 team points, Vargas earned 4 team points, Bautista earned 2 team points, McDonnell earned 3 team points, Ramirez earned 4 team points, Akinola earned 30 team points, Carvahlo wrestled 2 matches, Ericson earned 22 team points, and Lie earned 7 team points. The girls earned 4th place out of 56 schools, overtaking Everett Alvarez by 2 points!!!
Junior Wilson seeded 2nd in the tournament, wrestled 5 matches, pinned all her opponents through the semi-finals and defeated Marty Valdez (who she lost to earlier in the season 5-1) in the finals in overtime with a blast single and earned a sudden victory decision. Wilson is M-A's 3rd CCS champion in the last 20 years. The last CCS champions were Andres Delagnes and Kendra Wiley in 2012. Freshmen Akinola wrestled 5 matches and pinned her opponents through the quarter finals and won by decision in the semi-finals. She faced Minnah Adams in the finals and won by decision. Akinola is the first M-A freshmen in M-A's wrestling history to win a CCS Championship. Freshmen Ericson wrestled 4 matches and pinned 3 of her opponents. She is now the 3rd freshman (Wilson 2013 and Akinola 2016) in M-A wrestling history to qualify for the state competition as a freshmen. She scored the 3rd most points for the team. Freshmen Fuller, who did not compete at. P.A.L tournament due to injury, wrestled 4 matches and pinned 2 of her opponents. Junior Vargas, 2016 League Champion, wrestled 4 matches with an injured foot and soleless shoe. Her grit earned her two victories by decision. Freshmen Ramirez wrestled 3 matches and pinned one of her opponents. Freshmen Bautista wrestled 4 matches and earned 2 victories by decision. Freshmen McDonnell wrestled 4 matched and earned 2 victories by decision. Sophomore Ozden wrestled 3 matches and pinned his opponent from Gilroy. Sophomore Tonga wrestled 3 matches and pinned his opponent from Palma.

Apreciados estudiantes, familias y comunidad,
