SleepStanford Comes to M-A to Talk Sleep

M-A continues its long-standing Teen Sleep Program when students from Stanford's "Sleep and Dreams" class visit M-A on Tuesday, February 23 to present facts about teen sleep to freshmen. Volunteer M-A juniors act as ambassadors to the Stanford visitors that day. The M-A juniors traveled to Stanford's Sleep Center for a lecture and tour, then attended a Stanford's "Sleep and Dreams" class on February 17. Finally, the ambassadors will create a sleep info program for Feel Good Friday on March 11. Ask your freshman student about it. Did you know the typical teen needs 9 hours of sleep a night?!

How are teens using technology today? Our students are "digital natives" -- they have grown up in a world of online access and ever-changing media devices. Every parent knows that it's hard to keep up with kids and social media. How can you teach your teens responsibility and ethics online? What is the best way to parent the "always-on" generation?

Join Gloria Moskowitz-Sweet, PPSC, LCSW, Erica Pelavin, LCSW, PhD, from My Digital TAT2 for a highly interactive workshop on digital trends, psychological responses to social media, and the impact of social media on the adolescent brain.

Parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members welcome! Spanish interpretation will be available. Free admission. Woodside Parent Education Series events are sponsored by the Woodside PTSA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. Questions? MA Boys Win First Ever PAL Basketball Tournament
The PAL Basketball Tournament was established in 1995 and, while the M-A Boys have made the finals a number of times, they had never won the tournament. Rival Half Moon Bay, also 12-0 and champions of the North, awaited them as the top seed from the North. This time, the outcome would be different.

In the opening round, Menlo-Atherton Bears met PAL North fourth seed South San Francisco Warriors. M-A used a swarming defense and fast-paced offense to win 81-42. The win was M-A's 15th in a row. Blake Henry led the Bears with a double-double, scoring 24 points and gathering 11 boards. Kai Winterling came off the bench to score 18 for the Bears. Christian Fioretti chipped in 9 and 3 assist while Will Perrone had 8 points and 5 boards. Bradley Stillman had 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Raymond Fowler had 5 rebounds, and Robert MacDonald and Kai Winterling each had 4 boards.

In the second round at Mills High School, the M-A Bears shook off a poor shooting night and relied upon their smothering defense to defeat the pesky Aragon Dons in a low scoring game 56-36.Eric Norton led the Bears with 20 points, including 12-15 from the free throw line. He also had 4 boards. Christian Fioretti has 15 points, 9 rebounds and 5 steals. Lucas Fioretti had 9 points and 4 boards. Blake Henry chipped in 11 rebounds and Raymond Fowler had 7 rebounds. With the win, M-A advanced to the Finals of the PAL Half Moon Bay on Saturday Night at Mills.

In the PAL Tournament Final at Mills High School on Saturday Night, the Bears, winners of 16 in a row, faced the 25-1 PAL North Champions and rival Half Moon Bay. The teams started slowly in the first quarter and ended up with the Cougars leading the Bears 6-5. (They played a basketball game and a soccer game broke out!). M-A gained the lead at the end of the first half 19-13 as both teams played hard defense but M-A's 3 guards were the advantage. M-A edged to a 32-20 lead in the third led by Blake Henry and Eric Norton. The Cougars could never get closer, eventually losing 45-29 in a low scoring affair for both teams. With win, the Bears win their first ever PAL tournament.  Norton led the Bears with 14 points and he also had 4 steals and 3 assists. Lucas Fioretti had 11 points on 3 3's and added 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Blake Henry just missed a double double with 10 points and 9 boards. Christian Fioretti had 6 points and 5 assists. Kai Winterling hit 3 clutch free throws for the Bears. With the victory, the Bears go to 25-2 on the season and surely headed into the Open Division of the CCS playoffs, an incredible achievement. Congratulations to Coaches Mike Molieri, Nick Fogel, Adhir Ravapati and Rich Branning Jr. for an incredible season. And it's not over yet!

The Bears are PAL Champions, again!
Last week the reining PAL Champions took their 19 game winning streak and faced the PAL North in the PAL Tournament. As undefeated PAL South Champions, the Girls received the first seed in the PAL Tournament. On Wednesday at M-A they defeated the fourth seed in the PAL North, Westmoor 74-36. In the first quarter, the Bears briefly trailed 9-4. Coach Coleman called a timeout and the Bears got on track. Greer Hoyem and Ofa Sili were unstoppable in the paint all night. Hoyem had 19 points and Sili added 13 and 11 rebounds. In the second, the Bears welcomed back Carly McLanahan returning from injury who hit a 3 pointer and set off a 15-0 Bears run. Defensively Ilana Baer and Annalisa Crowe limited the Rams 3 point shooters and Megan Sparrow pulled down 7 first half rebounds as the Bears took a 18 point lead. In the third quarter the Freshman class helped blow the game open. Mele Kailahi hit her second 3 and Erica Fischer added two more as the Bears exploded for 24 points and cruised to victory.

With the win, the Bears advanced to the Semi-Final round of the PAL Tournament Friday night where they faced South San Francisco, the number two seed in the North. The Bears jumped out to a 17 point half time lead with Hoyem and Baer scoring 10 and 9 first half points respectively. But the Warriors would not go away quietly and in the third closed the deficit to 6 points. However, that was the end of the South City highlights as the Bears locked down defensively and scored in the paint and from the arc to win 61-43. Megan Sparrow had 8 second half points. She lead the Bears with 15 on the night with 2 three pointers.

With the win the Bears advanced to the Finals aka "the County Championship Game,"  Saturday Night at Mills where they faced Oceana, the number one seed in the PAL North. Prior to the game the Bears Greer Hoyem was named PAL South MVP and she responded in the game scoring 23 points, including 12 in the first quarter as the Bears took a 16-4 lead. In the second quarter the Sharks rallied back to a 1 point deficit. In the third, the Bears began to pull away with Megan Sparrow hitting a pair of 3s. In the fourth, Ofa Sili dominated the paint scoring all 12 of her points to put the game away, 60-42. Sili had 8 rebounds and an assist and Hoyem added 7 rebounds. Carly McLanahan and Ilana Baer fed the Bears posts all night, combined for 14 assists.

The Bears have now won back-to-back PAL Championships and are on a 22 game win streak. For their accomplishments the Girls were seeded 5th in the Open Division of CCS, where they will play Valley Christian on Friday, time and location TBA. The Open division of CCS is reserved for the top 8 teams across all 5 divisions of CCS. Open Division teams automatically qualify for the NorCal Tournament.

In awards news this week, the Bears deservedly dominated the PAL South All-League team with the following honors - Megan Sparrow Honorable Mention, Carly McLanahan second team, Ofa Sili first team and Greer Hoyem MVP. Congratulations to Natasha Auer, who was named the Lexus Cal-High Sports Volunteer of the Week. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DII57KGUFPI

 Girls JV Basketball

Top scorers for our Burlingame match up were Lottie Plewman with 10 points, Emilie Meuller with 7 points, Oron Estes and Emily Roberts with 6 points each. Other contributors were from Maddie King with 4 points, Baily Lentz with 2 points and 1 point from Ashley Tiznado.
