Automobile collisions are the leading cause of death for our nation's teens. The overwhelming majority of these crashes are caused by inexperience or distractions-not "thrill-seeking" or deliberate risk-taking. Teens drivers are at the highest risk: the crash rate for 16 years olds is four times that of adults. In this workshop, you will learn:
  • Strategies to keep your teens safe on the road
  • Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL) laws
  • The Rules of the Road for teen drivers
  • How YOU can stop the  #1 killer of teens in America--reckless and distracted driving
Parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members welcome! Spanish interpretation will be available. Free admission. Questions? Contact Charlene Margot, M.A., Director, at cmargot@csmconsulting.net or 650-868-0590.

Menlo-Atherton Bears lose 5-1 to Woodside High School:
The Menlo-Atherton Bears faced the undefeated Woodside Wildcats on Jan. 26, giving up 4 goals in the first half, despite strong defensive play by senior Kasey Love, juniors Ali Sivilotti and Allison Galbraith, and sophomore Grace Briegher. Sophomore goalkeeper Breanna Sandoval did an excellent job on defense. The Bears only goal came just before the half, when junior Margaret Child sent a corner kick to junior Sivilotti, who headed the ball into the net. The Bears allowed only 1 goal in the second half, holding the Wildcats to 5-1 for the final score. Consistent offensive efforts by forwards Talia Missan, Josephine Cotto, and Katie Guenin were thwarted by the strong Woodside defense. Senior Sarah McLeod just missed the net at the close of the game, and Menlo-Atherton took some comfort in being the only PAL team to score on Woodside so far this season.

Menlo-Atherton beat Capuchino High School 2-0:
The Menlo-Atherton Bears battled the Capuchino Mustangs to a 2-0 win on Jan. 28! The game started out slow due to the muddy sluggish field. Capuchino aggressively attempted to stop M-A from moving up the field with body play and continued to get fouled and carded throughout the game. Mara Cavallaro, Kasey Love, Zoe Ford, and Margaret Child responded with great speed and passing to thwart the Mustangs. The Bears found the net late in the first half, as senior Julia Moreton crossed a ball to senior Ford for the goal. In the second half, junior Alissa McNerney scored after a shot bounced off the cross bar and she drilled the ball into the net for a final goal. Menlo-Atherton stands at 5-2-1 in the league and overall 7-4-1. The Bears play Carlmont High School at home Tuesday at 4pm and Burlingame at home Thursday at 4pm.

 Girls JV Soccer
The JV Girls Soccer team has been having an excellent season! They went undefeated in 5 preseason games and in 6 regular season games until this Tuesday with a tough game (and controversial ref-ing) against Woodside, losing narrowly 2-1, despite an amazing penalty kick goal by freshman Yara Gomez. The team returned to their winning ways though in their 8th regular season game against Capuchino High School, logging a 5-0 win with goals by sophomore Vanessa Wheeler and freshmen Maggie Hall, Eva Neumann, Hannah Perez-Parsons and...incredibly... one of our keepers, Hunter Zell, who played forward briefly for a change of pace. The team takes to the field again next week on Tuesday, February 2, at home against Carlmont at 5:30 pm, who went down to defeat last game against the JV Girls 1-0 on January 7, thanks to some outstanding defense by Abby Weiss, Katie Thurston and Olivia Shane, and fast moving midfield play of Sierra Sakrison, and Kate Zanolli. The JV Girls Soccer Team is on a roll with 7-1 regular season record. Come watch the excitement next week at their home games on the Turf field at 5:30 February 2 and 4! Go BEARS!!!!

 Girls Varsity Basketball
Last week the Bears continued their domination of their PAL opponents as they went 2-0.  Wednesday, the team crushed Aragon at home 60-23. The Bears got off to a fast start due to a smothering defense highlighted by steals from juniors Ilana Baer and Megan Sparrow. All 5 starters scored in the first quarter led by 5 points from sophomore Carly McLanahan. At the half the Bears were up 40-4 sparked by a 12-point second quarter from sophomore Greer Hoyem and 5 more points from McLanahan. The team came out strong in the third quarter with Baer scoring 6 of her 8 points and freshman Mele Kailahi adding 4 more. Hoyem finished as the high scorer with 19.

On Friday, The Menlo-Atherton girls basketball team defeated the Sequoia Cherokees in their second match-up of the PAL season 73-26. The Bears ended the first quarter ahead 22-4 with junior Megan Sparrow sinking 2 3-pointers and junior Ofa Sili and freshman Mele Kailahi contributing 5 points each. The second quarter saw Kailahi add 4 points to her total and Greer Hoyem scored 5 more, both finishing the first half with 9 points each. The inside-outside game continued in the third quarter with M-A shooting 4 3-pointers, two from senior Annie Crowe and two more from Kailahi, who finished with a team-high 19 points, followed by center Sili who wound up with 13.

The Bears return home for two games next week -- battling the only other undefeated PAL opponent, Hillsdale, Wednesday at 5:30 pm and celebrating the team's four seniors on Friday vs. Carlmont, beginning at 6:15 pm.

The first place Menlo-Atherton Bears traveled to the Aragon Dons in a Wednesday night PAL matchup and used a balanced scoring attack to win 73-53. The Bears raced to a 20-9 first quarter lead as Christian Fioretti had 5 points and Lucas Fioretti and Eric Norton each had 4 points. M-A increased the lead to 38-15 paced by Lucas Fioretti's 5 second quarter points. The Dons scored 23 4th quarter points on 7 3's but never got closer than 20 points and the Bears ended up winning by 20. Blake Henry led the Bears with 12 points and 6 boards. Lucas Fioretti and Christian Fioretti each had 11 points, with Lucas Fioretti adding 4 steals. Eric Norton and Reed Fratt each had 8 points, with Norton chipping in 5 boards.

In a rematch of PAL rivals on Friday night, the M-A boys pulled out a thriller against the valiant Sequoia boys 72-61 to remain undefeated in league play. The last game at M-A was a lopsided Bears win and the Cherokees were determined to make this a different outcome. M-A raced to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter but Sequoia closed to 19-17 at the end of one. In the second period, it went back and forth and Sequoia went to halftime leading 36-32. The teams went back and forth in the 3rd and M-A made up the gap to tie at 51 all after three. With the score 62-61 M-A in the fourth, M-A scored the next 10 points to win 72-61. For the game, Norton led the Bears with 20 points and 4 steals. Henry had 17 points and 9 boards. Lucas Fioretti had 15 points and Christian Fioretti had 16 points, 10 assists and 5 boards. Raymond Fowler had 4 points and 6 boards. The win pushed M-A to 8-0 in the PAL and a two game lead over second place Burlingame.

On Saturday, January 30th, in a non-league game, Menlo-Atherton faced cross-town rival Sacred Heart Prep in their annual faceoff. The Gators raced to a quick 17-10 first quarter lead on the strength of three point shooting and SHP maintained the lead 31-27 going into halftime.  After a back and forth 3rd quarter, M-A used a pressing defense to grab the lead 47-44 after three. M-A kept up the pressure and momentum to outscore SHP 18-6 in the fourth quarter and go on to win 65-50. Eric Norton led the Bears with 21 points. Christian Fioretti had 15 points and 6 assists. Lucas Fioretti added 11 points and 8 rebounds. Blake Henry had 8 points and 4 steals and Raymond Fowler had 6 points and 3 boards. The win brings M-A's overall record to 18-2.

 Boys JV Basketball
The Bears rolled this past week with three big wins over quality teams that featured their tenacious defense coupled with a balanced and unselfish offense that finds a different scorer stepping up when most needed.

First up was a test on the Aragon court (one loss to date) in which the Bears stifled their opponents with Colin Shen unleashing his three point prowess with 4 threes and 16 total points, along with James Beckwith's clutch 8, Will Beasley and Jhavante Hill with 5 apiece, and Spencer Corona and Dean Fratt each making key baskets with a total of 8. Final M-A 53  Aragon 33

Playing cross town rivals Sequoia on their home court, the Bears ran into a stiff defense and a very different team than the one they had defeated at home in their first match-up. Led by Hill's coast to coast efforts, Shen's lights out shooting, Beckwith, Beasley, Miles Conrad, Fratt and Corona's scoring, the Team played from behind early to ahead late. Final M-A 58  Sequoia 43

Hosting perennial powerhouse Sacred Heart Prep, our boys played from 12 down in the first quarter 20-8, to dead even at the half 25-25. After the intermission, the Gators scored the first 5 points of the third quarter before the Bears offense started rolling and the swarming defense wore down the visitors, to put the home team up 7 at the end of the third and up 14 by the end of the game. An outstanding shooting performance by Shen for 13 pulled the team back into the thick of the fray, and the win was also propelled by Hill's 11, Beasley's 9, Beckwith's fearless efforts for 8, Conrad playing the big man role to perfection with a bunch of big rebounds, and Fratt and Corona rounding out the night with 9. Final M-A 60  SHP 46

 Girls JV Basketball
The M-A Girls JV basketball team played a tough, undefeated in PAL, Aragon High School team on Wednesday and lost by four with a score of 28-32. The girls had a tough time recouping the 13 turnovers in the first half, but rallied their defense to keep the game close. Maddie King and Makenzie Hazard had the game high scores of 10 and 9 points, respectively. Other players who scored were Lottie Plewmann with 4 points, Emilie Meuller with 3 points and Ashley Tiznado with 2 points.

At our Friday Quad game against Sequoia, our girls came out and dominated from the start. We held Sequoia to 16 points total with a final score of 44-16. We had 6 three-pointers and only 9 turnovers in the game. High scores were from Emily Roberts with 9 points and Oron Estes with 8 points. Other contributors to the score were Makenzie Hazard, Maddie King and Lottie Plewmann with 6 points each. Emilie Meuller scored 5 points and Ashley Tiznado scored 4 points.
