Freshmen RicAnthony Gold (128) earned 4 points for the team with a major decision by defeating his opponent by over 8 points. Maxim Sokolov (108), Julian Garza (122), and Aidan McKay (134) all earned 3 points for the team by minor decision victories. It is noteworthy to mention Gold, Sokolov, Garza, and McKay all competed for full matches at six minutes. The team gave up 3 pins, a minor decision and a forfeit totaling 27 points, but we also collected 3 forfeits: Niko Ozden (184), Abby Ericson (195), Ben Makoni (Heavy Weight). Of the M-A varsity squad only one who wrestled (Ruiz) was a 2nd year wrestler with all others either freshmen or first-year wrestlers. The team defeated the competition 43 to 27 and advances with a 2-1 league record. Next week the team wrestles Burlingame and South San Francisco. During the girls meet Oceana had 3 competitors. Boys Varsity Soccer
On Wednesday, the team defeated Burlingame 3-2 with the winning goal scored by Ethan Oro. The other two goals were scored by Nick Jandeleit and Oro.
On Friday, the team lead Aragon 2-0 at the half and held on for the win. The first goal was scored off a Quinn Rowland direct kick that was redirected by Oro but blocked by the goalie and finally followed up by Jean Claverie. Oro capitalized on a careless pass from the Aragon defender to challenge the goalie one-on-one and score the second goal. Now the Bears are 5-1 in league. Next up -- Carlmont HS (the other top-ranked team in league) on Wednesday January 27 at home. Come out to cheer them on! |
Girls Varsity Soccer
On Tuesday, the team beat Hillsdale 2-1 at Menlo-Atherton. The Bears started out strong with numerous shots on goal by the offensive line Josephine Cotto, Katie Gueniin and Talia Missan. Kasey Love sent a great cross over to Cotto but just missed the goal box. With 4 minutes remaining in half, Guenin shot it in for the first goal for M-A with an assist by defender Love. In the second half, M-A continued to have several strong shots on the goal and great saves by the M-A goalie Breanna Sandoval. With 36 minutes remaining to play, Sarah McLeod kicked it over the keepers head to Guenin who shot it in for the final goal for M-A! The Bears drive and intensity were highlighted with over 14 shots on goal by M-A, vs. 4 by Hillsdale. Menlo-Atherton stands at 3-1-1 in league play and 5-3-1 overall.
On Thursday, the team beat Half Moon Bay with a 7-0 win. The Bears dominated the Cougars early in the first half, with excellent passing in the mid-field from juniors Nicole Salz, Alissa McNerney, and Margaret Child, but they couldn't overcome the many offside calls to score. Strong defensive work by seniors Jaya Blanchard and Love, juniors Ali Sivilotti and Allison Galbraith, and freshman Elizabeth Young kept the score at 0-0 at the half. The Bears were on fire in the second half with four goals in rapid succession in the first 15 minutes! Sivilotti opened the storm door with a corner kick by Salz, which Sivilotti headed into the net. This was followed by a cross by junior Cotto to junior Guenin for header goal number two. Minutes later, Salz sent the ball to Cotto who passed to senior Missan for the goal. A line drive by senior midfielder Mcleod Missan resulted in the assist to Guenin for goal number four. The Bears spread the wealth with goal five following a pass from senior Julia Moreton to freshman Lauren Collinsworth who tapped the ball into the net. Following a nice run by Child up the field, Moreton passed to McCleod who fired in goal number six. The final goal of the night was by Love, who had moved to offense and dribbled the ball up the field to make the shot. Goalkeeper Sandoval had few shots to field but did so very ably. The M-A Bears record improves to 4-1-1 in the league and 6-3-1 overall.

After a MLK holiday game vs Castlemont, Menlo-Atherton Bears overcame a scrappy Mills team to win 60-39 in a PAL matchup. The Vikings led after one period 12-9 but M-A's defense clamped down on Mills with a full court press and the Bears outscored the Vikings 26-12 to lead 35-24 at half. In the second half, M-A extended the lead to 52-33 after 3 quarters and maintained the lead to end the game. For the game, Lucas Fioretti, Winterling and Norton each had 15 points for the Bears. Boys JV Basketball
The Bears continued the 2016 portion of their season with three blowout wins, a squeaker and their first loss of this year. M-A narrowly lost to a ready San Mateo team. Despite Jeff Keare's 13 point 2nd quarter and 17 total, San Mateo matched our offense with their own able shooting. Of significant note was Colin Shen's 9 point contribution (3-3s!), Will Beasley with 7 and a handful of rebounds, James Beckwith leading the floor attack and tossing in 5. Final score, M-A 44 to San Mateo 48. The Squad came back strong with an easy win at Carlmont (scoring notes unavailable), followed by another big win against east bay visitor Castlemont. In a game with their most balanced team scoring effort yet, big men Dean Fratt and Ingold Faleofa led the team with 9 points each, with help from Troy Sweetnam with 6 (2- 3s!), followed by Miles Conrad, Beasley, Jhavante Hill, bringing 5 apiece to the party, Beckwith, Spencer Corona and Demetri Sakalia rounding up 12 between them. Final score M-A 58 to Castlemont 32. In their most exciting game to date, the Bears pulled out a huge win after battling in a 32 minute game where neither team was ever ahead by more than 5. Hill was a monster on the court leading the bears on offense with 12 and ridiculously good defense. As Coach Carson searched for a rotation that could score and defend (Mills had MADE 15 3s in their previous game) the Bears defenders locked down on the Mills shooters for a total of 4 made 3s. Beasley willed his way to 10 crucial points and numerous boards, while Colin Shen hit two 3s at the perfect moments, and Corona, making two buckets when the game was slipping away, also created with 15 seconds to play, the final Mills turnover which led to the winning Bears bucket. It was a true "barn burner!" Final score M-A 37 to Mills 36. Finally, playing their arch rival Woodside, the team played their most complete game of the year. The Boys' defense locked down from the tip and was relentless throughout the game, leading to 20+ Woodside turnovers. The entire team saw significant playing time and the soring reflected that approach and the team dominance in this game. Scoring was balanced with Corona leading with 10, Hill 7, Chris Lobdell schooling some of his former team mates with 5 and several steals, and Fratt, Beasley, Faleofa, and Sakalia with 4 each. Final score M-A 53 to Woodside 24. Next game Wed, Jan 27 at Aragon. |
Boys Freshman Basketball
The M-A boys freshman basketball team continued their winning ways for the four games from January 12-20, with wins against Los Altos, San Mateo, Carlmont, and Mills. The team is now off to a 15-1 start (6-0 league) for the season. In the game versus Los Altos, M-A built an early 18-4 lead in the first quarter and cruised from there to win with a final score of 54-32. Team highlights included 26 rebounds and 14 steals. Nate Lepulu led the way with 12 points and 9 rebounds, followed closely by Sydney Laeppaga with 11 points. Other significant contributors included Anthony Marini and Danny Heimuli with 8 points each. In the next game versus San Mateo, M-A again started fast, leading 14-4 after the first quarter, and built on that lead throughout the game to win with a final score of 54-33. Nils Glader led the team with 14 points, followed by Heimuli with 11 points and 6 rebounds, and David Kelmar with 8 points. Unlike most of the other games this season, the next game versus Carlmont was a thriller. M-A started slow, trailing at half-time by 5 points (16-11), but surprised Carlmont with a quick seven unanswered points to open the second half, and then held on to the very end to win 39-35. Key contributors were Heimuli with 12 points, and Kelmar with 11 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists. The team also made 8 of 11 free throws which may have been the difference in the game. Finally, in the game versus Mills, M-A cruised from the very start of the game and won with a final score of 41-17. Team highlights included 28 rebounds and making 4 of 7 from beyond the arc. High scorer for the game was Lucas Olson with 9 points, followed closely by Heimuli with 8 points and 6 rebounds. |
Girls JV Basketball The JV Girls Basketball team won their ninth straight game this week. Wednesday, against Mills High School, the Bears dominated with a 46-14 win. Makenzie Hazard led the team with 14 points, followed by Emilie Mueller with 11. M-A's defense limited their opponent to under 15 points, which was a team goal. Ashley Tiznado contributed 7 points, Maddie King and Lottie Plewman scored 6 points each and Emily Roberts scored 2 points.
On Friday, the Bears played against Woodside High School and maintained a healthy lead the entire game. Our top scorers were Hazard and King with 13 points each, followed by Plewman with 12 points. Tiznado contributed 7 points and Ellie Kennedy scored 2 points. Another strong defensive performance prevented Woodside from gaining any ground on our 47-22 victory.
The JV Girls are 6-0 in the PAL league and are averaging 46.5 points per game. The Bears will be home on Wednesday hosting Aragon High School at 4:00 p.m. On Friday, they will be at Sequoia High School with a 3:15 pm tip off.
