Dear Menlo-Atherton Families,
Happy New Year! The second semester is well underway, with classes back in full swing. Our enrollment remains healthy at 2,267 students. As we have had a slightly larger than projected enrollment, we were able to do some restructuring of the master schedule to reduce some 9th grade class sizes for second semester. This did require changing some student schedules, however, we tried to minimize changes and the long term impact will be a better educational environment for all. We look forward to a great second half of the school year!
Construction Update
The construction of our Phase I-G wing 21 classroom building is moving along and we expect completion at the end of this year. If you happen to walk through the administration building lobby, you will get a glimpse of the new G wing and Phase II project, a 6 classroom Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) building. The STEM building will feature Culinary Arts, two Physics and two Biology classrooms, and a maker space amidst an aesthetically pleasing environment. With a viewing area overlooking our tennis courts, landscaped with trees, plants and a pathway that will connect the building with the rest of the campus, it will be a beautiful part of the campus. Phase II will also include a new main kitchen facility and student restroom facilities.
I am happy to report our planned power outage over the winter break went well with minimal disruption and power was restored to the campus well ahead of schedule. All systems were up and running when students returned to school on January 5.
M-A from the Inside Out
Finally, I invite you to join me this Thursday evening in the PAC Cafeteria for "M-A from the Inside Out." In collaboration with Charlene Margot, our Parent Education series coordinator, we have planned a session that will feature a teacher panel. Come and hear from expert teachers about their thoughts on student stress, homework, make-up opportunities and student, teacher, and parent communication. The program will start at 6:30 pm in the PAC Cafe. Light refreshments will be served. Register here and see details in the Parent Education section of this Bear Notes.
We look forward to a great second semester.

Boys Varsity Soccer
The M-A Boys Varsity Soccer defeated their rival Sequoia on Jan 13th 3-1 with goals scored by Kyle Smith, Ethan Oro, and Jean Claverie.
On Jan. 15 the team traveled to South San Francisco and lost 3-5. South San Francisco HS scored quickly on a header off a corner kick. Ari Eisner was red carded by preventing a goal-scoring opportunity and SSF scored on the PK. Although down 0-2 and playing a man down due to the red card, the team rallied back with goals from Alex Gallo off a direct kick and Nick Jandelet. The half ended 2-3 with an unfortunate own-goal scored by M-A. In the 2nd half, SSF scored on another PK from a foul in the box (down 2-4). Smith scored M-A's third goal, but the team could not rebound enough to pull out a win. The team is now 3-1 in league. |
Girls Varsity Soccer
The M-A Bears tied the Burlingame Panthers at Burlingame last Tuesday. The Bears started out strong with a nicely deflected Burlingame Panther corner kick by M-A sophomore goalie Breanna Sandoval, who went on to defend 5 Panther corner kick attempts. Nine minutes into the game, M-A right defender Grace Brieger (sophomore) fed the ball to forward Katie Guenin (junior) who passed to midfielder Sarah McLeod (senior); McLeod crossed for an assist back to Guenin who drilled the ball into the top of the net. Strong movement up the field by Alissa McNerney (junior), Margaret Child (junior), Nicole Salz (junior), and McLeod resulted in numerous shots on goal by M-A, but no additional scoring. An M-A defensive miss resulted in the single Burlingame goal at minute 24, which slipped pass Sandoval. The second half of the game was well-matched between both teams, with great defensive work by Ali Silviotti (junior), Allison Galbraith (junior), and Kasey Love (senior).
The M-A Bears beat Aragon at M-A last Thursday!! After a scoreless first half, the M-A Bears came out strong in the second half to defeat the Aragon Dons 2-0. Following a great pass from senior Sarah McLeod from the midfield, sophomore Josephine Cotto crossed a ball to junior Katie Guenin, who tapped the goal in after being deflected by a Dons defender. Terrific defensive work by sophomore goalie Breanna Sandoval, junior Ali Silviotti, junior Alison Galbraith, and senior Casey Love prevented any points for the Dons, with consistent mid-field work by McLeod, juniors Nicole Salz, Alissa McNerney, and Margaret Child, and senior Molly Briggs. Sophomore Mara Cavallaro crossed a ball to Guenin who drilled into (and through) the net. M-A stands at 2-1-1 in league play with the next game at home on Tuesday 1/19/16 against Hillsdale.
