WOODSIDE PARENT EDUCATION SERIES
Distracted Driving Workshop

Kelly Browning, PhD, Impact Teen Drivers (California Highway Patrol)

Thursday, January 14, 2016, 7 to 9 pm
Woodside High School, Multi-Use Room (MUR)

Automobile collisions are the leading cause of death for our nation's teens. The overwhelming majority of these crashes are caused by inexperience or distractions, not "thrill-seeking" or deliberate risk-taking. Teen drivers are at the highest risk; the crash rate (per miles driven) for 16-year-olds is four times that of adults.

In this workshop, you will learn about:
  • Strategies to keep your teens safe on the road
  • Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL) laws
  • The rules of the road for teen drivers
  • How YOU can stop the  #1 killer of teens in America--reckless and distracted driving
Since 2007, Impact Teen Drivers has emerged as a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to reversing the pervasive yet 100% preventable crisis of "distracted driving." Impact's mission is to change the culture of teen driving, thereby saving lives in this and future generations of drivers.

Parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members welcome! Free admission. Spanish interpretation available. For any questions about the Parent Education Series, contact Charlene Margot, Series Director, at  cmargot@csmconsulting.net or (650) 868-0590.  Girls Varsity Soccer
On Tuesday, the M-A Varsity Girls upset Capuchino with 5-0 win!! M-A played strong and had great coordinated plays and passes that helped keep Capuchino guessing the entire game. M-A scored first, when Katie Guenin knocked it in with an assist by Josephine Cotto in the first five minutes. Cotto then quickly scored with a nice assist from Sarah Mcleod. Talia Missan showed great tenacity while stealing the ball and quickly made the third goal for the Bears. She fought hard by jumping over the goalie as the ball fell from the keepers hands and then jumped over to tap it in to the goal. In the second half, Guenin was fed the ball from Nichole Salz and easily shot it in for another goal. Molly Briggs and Ali Sivilotti showed great strength in defending and had some nice long passes up the field. With five minutes left to play, Mcleod fed the ball to Guenin who made the 5th goal for M-A and resulted in a hat trick with her third goal of the game!

Thursday, M-A played valiantly against Carlmont but were outscored 5-2 despite numerous strong shots by the Bears on the Carlmont goalie. The Bears started off strong in the game with several strong attempts on goal, but Carlmont was able to score within the first 10 minutes. Both Kasey Love and Alisson Galbraith had great defensive plays in the first half but Carlmont continued to score. With 5 minutes left in the first half, Missan was able to secure the ball and pass it over to Salz, who was able to shoot it in for the first goal for M-A. In the second half, the Bears were able to score again with a beautiful pass from McLeod up to Guenin who was able to fire it into the net after the ball was deflected by the goalie on the first attempt.

This makes M-A 1-1-0 in PAL league play with two games to play next week. On Tuesday the Bears will play at Burlingame at 4pm, and on Thursday, M-A will host Aragon at M-A at 4pm.

  Wrestling
The Menlo-Atherton wrestling team kicked off its league season Thursday night with dual meets against rival Woodside and Aragon. M-A, a team with practically all first-year wrestlers, dominated Woodside, finishing off the meet with a score of 54-24. Unfortunately, M-A came four points short against Aragon, ending the meet 36-40 because of a series of forfeits at the 189, 220, and 106 weight classes. Congratulations to Nicol Garcia (11), Ricanthony Gold (9), Nicky Wong (9), Alex Friedman (12), Justin Williams (10), Bianca Vargas (11), and Lauren McDonnell (9) for pinning their opponents, and John Hamren (12), David Sobek (12), and Sal Ruiz (10) for pinning their opponents in both meets. A great start to a promising season!

From the BearNotes Editors
How to Submit Articles

Please keep articles short and focused. Longer articles are welcome, but keep the most important info in the first paragraph. (Longer articles might show only the first paragraph in the BearNotes email and then continue on the M-A PTA website.)
  • Email proofread submissions by midnight Thursday to bearnotes@mabearspta.org.
  • Please do not send attachments. Send article content in the body of the email.
  • Include all details like date, time, location, contact info, and URL.
  • Include a Spanish translation if your article includes critical info that all parents need. (Please email BearNotes if you need help with translation.)
  • All submissions are subject to editing by the PTA.

For policies and more info, please visit the M-A PTA website
