Distracted Driving Workshop

Kelly Browning, PhD, Impact Teen Drivers (California Highway Patrol)

Thursday, January 14, 2016, 7 to 9 pm
Woodside High School, Multi-Use Room (MUR)

Automobile collisions are the leading cause of death for our nation's teens. The overwhelming majority of these crashes are caused by inexperience or distractions, not "thrill-seeking" or deliberate risk-taking. Teen drivers are at the highest risk; the crash rate (per miles driven) for 16-year-olds is four times that of adults.

In this workshop, you will learn about:
  • Strategies to keep your teens safe on the road
  • Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL) laws
  • The rules of the road for teen drivers
  • How YOU can stop the  #1 killer of teens in America--reckless and distracted driving
Since 2007, Impact Teen Drivers has emerged as a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to reversing the pervasive yet 100% preventable crisis of "distracted driving." Impact's mission is to change the culture of teen driving, thereby saving lives in this and future generations of drivers.

Parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members welcome! Free admission. Spanish interpretation available. Questions? Contact Charlene Margot, Director of the Parent Education Series, at cmargot@csmconsulting.net or (650) 868-0590. For Spanish, contact Maricela Lopez, Bilingual Parent Liaison, at (650) 367-7263, Ext. 45323.

 Boys Freshmen Basketball
The M-A boys freshman basketball team had another great week of basketball with wins against Half Moon Bay, Mountain View and Palo Alto, outscoring their opponents 131-71 in the process. With these games, the team is off to a 10-1 start for the season.

In the first game, M-A triumphed over Half Moon Bay 34-26. Team highlights included 15 blocks/deflections, 3 for 8 shooting from beyond the arc, and only 10 turnovers. Anthony Marini lead the way with 8 points and two steals, followed by Heath Hooper with 6 points while playing in only the second half. Danny Heimuli also had a significant contribution with 5 points, 5 rebounds and 5 blocks/deflections. The game was tight through two quarters (19-18), but once again, M-A pulled away in the second half.

In the Mountain View game, M-A built an early 9 point lead in the first half and expanded that to 14 by the final whistle, winning 41-27. Leading contributors included Danny Heimuli with 12 points and 4 blocks/deflections, David Kelmar with 9 points and 3 assists, and D'Marshaun Payton with 6 points, 2 assists and 2 steals. Other top contributors included Heath Hooper with 6 rebounds and 4 points, and Anthony Marini with 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists.

Finally, in the Palo Alto game, M-A dominated from the beginning and won 56-18. Team highlights included 11 out of 12 players scoring for M-A, and the team making 20 of 24 shots from the free throw line.  Boys JV Basketball
The Bears wrapped up 2015 with two decisive victories over local rival Menlo and out of towners Jefferson and a loss to previously beaten Palo Alto (Burlingame Tournament). Menlo ran into a buzz saw attack by the Bears, led by Jeff Keare's 17 points and 5 (yes, FIVE) made three point shots. Adding to the offensive attack was Brendan McLaughlin with 9 big points, Spencer Corona with 7 and a couple of huge rebounds, Miles Conrad returning to form with 6, and Will "The Beast" Beasley chipping in 6 and some big defensive plays. Elliot Barnes and the entire team played non-stop pressure defense which forced Menlo to search for an answer to getting off a shot before the shot clock would expire on almost all of their possessions. Final score: M-A 61 Menlo 25.

Jefferson met the same fate at the M-A gym, with Kearse making two threes and a deuce before Jefferson was able to get a shot off. Behind a total team effort, the Bears held Jefferson scoreless until the last 30 seconds of the first quarter, and that's where the game really came to an early conclusion. Of special note was Jhavante Hill's floor leadership and scoring, along with Corona, Beasley, and Colin Shen's 7 points and great rebounding in his sixth man roll. The entire team again saw extended action as the team closed it down prior to the Christmas break. Final score: M-A 50 Jefferson 29.

A short handed Bears squad ran in to a red hot three shooting team in the rematch with Palo Alto. Led by the tough play and scoring of Hill, the team saw great play by Chris Lobdel, Conrad, Barnes, and McLaughlin to pull within 4 by the half, but went down to an 18 point quarter by PA which led to a final score of Palo Alto 44  M-A 29. Congratulations to the Bears on a great 7-2 start to their season.

M-A's Megan Sparrow had five steals.

On December 28th in the opening round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament, M-A defeated Sacred Heart Prep 63-52 in a game held at Menlo School. The Bears jumped out to a 11-2 lead in the first four minutes, but the Gators rallied back to take the lead in the second quarter. At the start of the third quarter, the Bears shook off their post holiday rust and went on a 16-0 run that proved to be the difference in the game. M-A's Megan Sparrow and Carly McLanahan each had a pair of 3's during the run, while Ofa Sili and Greer Hoyem scored in the paint. McLanahan scored 25 including five 3 pointers.

In the Semi-Finals on December 29th, M-A defeated Lincoln (San Francisco) 55-28 at East Side Prep. The Bears dominated the smaller Mustangs holding Lincoln to a single first half field goal. Seniors Delilah Kline and Jamie Kirkpatrick combined for 9 points.

In the Championship game on December 30th, M-A defeated Granada Hills  56-36 winning the Coaches Vs. Cancer Tournament. Carly McLanahan, who averaged 15 points and 5 assists across the three games, was named Tournament MVP. Greer Hoyem, who averaged 13 points and 5 rebounds for the tournament, was named to the All-Tournament Team.

On Saturday, the Girls visited Half Moon Bay defeating the Cougars 48-41. The game opened as a defensive struggle with the Cougars leading by two after the first quarter. In the second, M-A took an 8 point lead with Ilana Baer, Annalisa Crowe and Carly McLanahan hitting threes. The Cougars closed to within 4 points with 2 minutes remaining, but Baer, who lead the Bears with 14, made her free throws to put the game away.

M-A finishes their non-league schedule with a 10-2 record. This week the Bears begin league play with a 5:30 game at Capuchino on Wednesday followed by a 6:15PM home game vs. Sequoia on Friday.

On Saturday, January 2nd, in a tale of two halves, Half Moon Bay Cougars overcame a 28-14 halftime deficit to defeat Menlo-Atherton Bears in a non-league tilt 55-49. M-A played tough first half defense and held Half Moon Bay to 7 points in each of the first two quarters. Eric Norton's 12 points and Christian Fioretti's 8 points led the Bears. In the second half, Half Moon Bay switched to a zone defense and the M-A struggled to keep their first half momentum.
