Please Drive Safely

As we finish out this school year and get ready to start another semester, I want to take a moment and remind everyone to drive safely as they drive to and from M-A and as they navigate through the parking lots and roundabouts of our school. School drop off and dismissal can be stressful times in the day; please be mindful of other cars, pedestrians and students on bikes as they arrive to or leave the campus. Along these lines I also want to remind parents and students not to double park in front of our neighbors' driveways in the Menlo Oaks area as well as in front of SRI along Middlefield Road; doing so blocks traffic for cars coming in and out of these areas and presents a traffic hazard to the general area.

I hope everyone has a relaxing, joyful, and safe winter break!

FINANCIAL AID NIGHT
: Mark your calendar for January 6, 2016 at 7:00 pm at the PAC Cafe in English and at the Library in Spanish. Come to this important event where you will hear directly from a college financial aid expert. Since you cannot fill out the FAFSA online before January 1, you will get lots of great information on January 6 to fill out this form knowledgeably and soon after the filing period opens.

For Parents of Juniors
Junior Parent College Night will be on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at 7:00 pm in the PAC Cafe, with simultaneous interpretation in Spanish.

For Parents of Sophomores
Sophomore Parent College Night will be on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at 6:30pm in the Library (instead of January 19, 2016), with simultaneous interpretation in Spanish.

Summer Activities
Last week Friday, an email from the College/Career Center went to students via School Loop with some wonderful ideas and resources for Summer Activities (camps, programs, jobs, volunteering, internships, etc.). You may ask your student about it in order to start a conversation. While it may feel early to start thinking about the summer, some programs may have deadlines in January. Most deadlines occur February through May. Students can log into their School Loop account to read their Loop Mail.

Distracted Driving Workshop

Kelly Browning, PhD, Impact Teen Drivers (California Highway Patrol)

Thursday, January 14, 2016, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Woodside High School, Multi-Use Room (MUR)

Automobile collisions are the leading cause of death for our nation's teens. The overwhelming majority of these crashes are caused by inexperience or distractions, not "thrill-seeking" or deliberate risk-taking. Teen drivers are at the highest risk: the crash rate (per miles driven) for 16 years olds is four times that of adults.

In this workshop, you will learn about:
  • Strategies to keep your teens safe on the road
  • Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL) laws
  • The Rules of the Road for teen drivers
  • How YOU can stop the  #1 killer of teens in America--reckless and distracted driving
Since 2007, Impact Teen Drivers has emerged as a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to reversing the pervasive yet 100% preventable crisis of "distracted driving." Impact's mission is to change the culture of teen driving, thereby saving lives in this and future generations of drivers.

Parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members welcome! Free admission. Spanish interpretation available. Questions? This week, the Bears faced two of the top teams in NorCal. On Tuesday M-A lost to Palo Alto, 62-45. M-A kept it close during the first quarter, but Paly blew the game open in the second and never looked back. Ofa Sili and Carly McLanahan lead the Bears with 13 points each. Ilana Baer scored 7 and had 2 steals. Annalisa Crowe dominated on defense in the second half. On Thursday, M-A lost to Presentation High School 55-44. The Bears struggled with the Panthers quickness and relentless press early in the game. In the third quarter the Bears rallied back to within 2 points as Sally Carlson and McLanahan helped break the Presentation press while Greer Hoyem scored 9 of her 21 points. However in the fourth, the Panthers made their free throws and put the game away. On Saturday, the Bears got back on track defeating George Washington (San Francisco) 68-41 in a game they dominated from the opening tip. Sili lead M-A with 17 points while McLanahan had four 3 pointers and seven assists. Megan Sparrow scored and drew fouls in the paint and from the three point line. Senior Delilah Kline added five points. The Bears return to action on Friday December 18 when they host Menlo School at 6pm.

In a close battle and possible CCS preview, the Bellarmine Bells edged the M-A Bears in a thriller 58-57. Bellarmine raced to a narrow half time lead of 29-23, with a largest lead of 9 in the first half. Bellarmine was paced by Angelo Athens' 11 points in the first half. M-A countered in the first half with 7 from Eric Norton and 6 from Lucas Fioretti. M-A closed the gap in the second half and trailed by 1 at the end of 3 quarters as Lucas Fioretti scored 12 points in that period. M-A took a 3 point lead with under 2 minutes left and the game went back and forth at the end. M-A tied the game on driving layup by Kai Winterling, who was fouled hard on the play and was too hurt to shoot the free throw. Tim Andersen came off the bench to coolly sink the free throw, and M-A was up by one with 6 seconds left. But Angelo Athens raced the length of the court and made a layup as time expired to win the game for the Bells. Lucas Fioretti has 21 points, hitting 5 3-pointers and 5 assists for the Bears. Norton filled the stat sheet with 9 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 5 assists. Co-captain Christian Fioretti added 8 points and 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Reed Fratt and Kailen Kershner each had 4 points.

Coach Carson's team is off to a great start to the season with four wins. Utilizing a stifling full court help defense and press and a constant team motion offense, they have been firing on all eight cylinders. El Camino fell to the Bears 61-42 led by Jeff Keane's 13 first quarter points, Jhavante Hill with 12 points and multiple steals, Spencer Corona with 7 points and numerous rebounds and Colin Shen's sharp shooting for 5 points. Milpitas met the same fate 62-31 high scorers Keane, 15, Hill, 9, Will Beasley and Elliott Barnes 8 each, Corona with 7 and key buckets by Chris Lobdell. Entering the Burlingame Lions Tournament, the Bears rolled Mills 56-27 in the first round led by Hill with 16, Beasley a strong 10, and Keane two big threes. Advancing to the second round, the team displayed frenetic defense and opportunistic offense despite not having their best shooting night, and beat perennial powerhouse Palo Alto 45-39. Scoring was well balanced and led by Hill's 16 including his  clutch free throws and Beasley's 10 inside points. Strong rebounding by Chen, Barnes and Corona sealed the deal.

The Bears took first place in the Burlingame Lions tournament and won the championship by defeating crosstown rival Sacred Heart Prep. The M-A squad played tenacious unrelenting defense while scoring consistently. Top scorer  Keane rained five threes upon the opponents and went for a total of 17, and Brendan McLoughlin sparked the team with nine.  Corona, Miles Conrad, and Hill all chipped in key buckets with seven points each, followed by the tough rebounding and scoring of Beasley with six. Key defensive plays and tough rebounding was delivered courtesy of Barnes. Congratulation Bears on a tremendous start to your season.

 Boys Freshman Basketball
The M-A boys freshman basketball team had another good week with wins against Milpitas and Los Altos. M-A triumphed over Milpitas 50-41, with Nils Glader leading the way with 14 points, followed by Heath Hooper and Danny Heimuli with 11 points each. Danny also hauled in 5 rebounds, while D'Marshaun Payton led the team with 4 steals. M-A was behind at the half 21-23, but pulled away in the fourth quarter 13-6 to secure the win.

In the Los Altos game, M-A dominated from the very beginning, leading 31-14 at the half, and 62-20 at the final buzzer. Leading scorers were Heimuli with 12 points, and Grant Henry and Lucas Olson with 9 points each. Grant also had 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 assists. Other top contributors included Anthony Marini with 7 points, 3 steals and 3 assists, Glader with 6 points and 6 rebounds, and Nate Lepulu with 6 points and 3 rebounds.
