Dear M-A Students and Families,
November is always a busy time of year as the holidays and end of the year approach. It is also a time many of us consider what we are thankful for. In this message I want to impart that I am very thankful for a dedicated staff, vibrant students and supportive parents as the school has undergone several transitions--new Principal, G wing building under construction, increased enrollment, and some facility challenges. I have made it a priority to be in tune and in touch with students around the campus and while there are the typical high school challenges, the vibe among students is positive.
As the 2015-16 year is under way, students are now well into their second quarter of school, with only a few weeks after Thanksgiving break to get ready for final exams. This can be an enjoyable time for many, however also stressful with college application deadlines, family expectations, and semester finals. At M-A, our focus is on finding balance and supporting well-being as we strengthen our community. To that end, we have been proactive in our vision to mitigate stress by adopting a later start time for most students, having a true semester break from school in the winter, and providing an array of counseling and support services. I would like to remind students and families that M-A has a variety of services that can help students navigate through these strenuous times. Please see the information (following my message) from Miki Cristerna, who runs the Partnership for Success, about our resources. Students can visit the support center located in B-20 or can connect with their guidance counselor in the guidance office if they need any assistance.
M-A Administration
Given the many facets of running a large high school, I would like to highlight the main responsibilities my administrative team takes on to keep M-A up and running on a daily basis.
JC joined M-A this year with experience as a Vice Principal at Castro Valley High School, and prior to that a Social Studies teacher. JC is the AVP for 10th and 12th grade students. He is in charge of support programs, homework centers, facility maintenance, school safety, special education and student attendance, intervention and discipline. He can be found in the back office of the Administration Building. His secretary is Noemy Menjivar, nmenjivar@seq.org.
A veteran at M-A, having been a Math teacher and Student Activities Director before assuming the role of IVP, Steve is the guru of the school's master schedule. He is in charge of curriculum and instruction, courses, the guidance department and career center, instructional materials, and testing. He can be found in the first office in the Administration Building. His secretary is Lorrie Orcutt, lorcutt@seq.org.
Also a veteran at M-A, having been an English teacher before assuming the role of AVP, Karl is the AVP for 9th and 11th grade students. He is in charge of athletics, arena check-in, facility use and events calendar, field trips, health office, custodians, campus aides and student attendance, intervention and discipline. His secretary is Elaine Rivera, erivera@seq.org.
Construction Update
We held a ground-breaking ceremony at the end of October as we began increment two of our 21 classroom G Wing building. Our general contractor, Alten Construction, is making good progress and if all goes well, have a targeted completion date of December 2016.
During the winter break, the entire campus will get a power grid update to support the new building and pull a new, upsized wire from the main service to a reconfigured main distribution switchgear for the entire campus. This means PGE will be shutting down all power to M-A HS from December 21 through December 30, 2015. Besides a few sports practices and games that are scheduled in our gyms (which will have generator power), the campus will be closed. We will have around the clock security and fire watch during this time. I have been assured that we will have every precaution in place to make sure all power and systems are back online when we return in January.
Canned Food Drive
For more than twenty years, a signature part of the late fall on campus is the annual canned food drive. Started by Coach Parks, and sustained now by the Leadership Program, this effort brings together huge parts of the school's community. The annual canned food drive has begun, with an ambitious goal of collecting 100,000 pounds of food. M-A is again partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank (SHFB). Here are ways that you can help:
- When grocery shopping, please add a few extra cans to your cart and drop them into the SHFB barrels.
- Sign up for canning. Students do not have to be in the Leadership class to participate. Contact Mr. Amoroso at mamoroso@seq.org or go to room B-21.
News and Noteworthy
- Congratulations to our Girl's Volleyball team for winning the Central Coast Section Division 1 Championship and qualifying for the Nor Cal Tournament.
- Katrina Wijaya and Katie Webb, 2015 graduates, won the National Scholastic Press Association's Design of the Year award for their Mark Magazine spread "Veggies for Life."
Again, thank you Menlo-Atherton community for your support and continuing to make M-A a great place to be.

As we enter the holiday season, it's important to remember this time can be both joyous and stressful for many students and families. College application deadlines, family holiday expectations and semester finals can add additional layers of stress for students with an already challenging schedule. Fortunately, M-A has a variety of student support services that can help students navigate through these strenuous times. Through M-A's Partnership for Success, we are able to provide on-campus crisis counseling, intervention and prevention services to support students' social-emotional well-being, year round. Additionally, we provide clinical case management, brief intervention counseling, bilingual parent outreach, mentoring and referrals to off-site agencies. Guidance Counselors are also a primary source of support and can assist students and families with referrals to these and other services. All of these services are available to M-A students on a daily basis, and parents are encouraged to contact us with any questions.Student Support StaffMiki Cristerna, LMFT, Student Support and Partnership for Success Director, mcristerna@seq.orgMatt Cusick, LPCCi, StarVista Counseling Coordinator, matt.cusick@star-vista.orgMariela Ramirez, StarVista Clinical Case Worker, mariela.ramirez@star-vista.orgLilly Quinonez, Bilingual Parent Coordinator, lquinonez@seq.orgGonzalo Alvarez Chavez, Bilingual Community Liaison, gchavez@seq.orgGuidance CounselorsSilvia Torres Garza, Department Chair, sgarza@seq.orgLara Sandora, lsandora@seq.orgKarina Escobar-Weaver, keweaver@seq.orgLaura Duran, lduran@seq.orgFrancine Andrade, fandrade@seq.orgJason Kubo, jkubo@seq.orgMegan Corazza, mcorazza@seq.orgNikki Dang, tdang@seq.orgDuring non-school hours, Starvista's Child and Adolescent Hotline & Prevention Program (CAHPP) is a great resource 1-650-567-5437.

Global Leaders has two remaining spots on our Spring Guatemala Journey, and two remaining spots on our Summer Ghana Journey. We'd love for you to join our team!
As part of a year-long service-learning program, Global Leaders offers the opportunity to travel and participate in service in Guatemala from April 2 to 10, 2016 or Ghana from June 7 to 20, 2016. These international experiences give students the chance to immerse themselves in the culture of their host country, while building elementary schools, working on reforestation projects, and volunteering time to hospitals and children's homes. In Guatemala, students will receive 15 hours of one-on-one Spanish that can jumpstart language acquisition.
If you're interested in learning more, contact Program Director Andy Stuart at astuart@seq.org. There are also three remaining spots for a summer trip to the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador with EF (Education First). An informational meeting for this trip only, will be Thursday, Dec 3 at 6:00 pm in Room I-5. Please RSVP to Andy Stuart, astuart@seq.org. The itinerary is jam-packed full of culturally immersive activities that showcase Ecuador's beauty and diversity. Some highlights include the Intinan Museum, where students will discover how the Incas determined the middle of the Earth. The students will then have the opportunity to pose for a photo on the equator, the namesake of Ecuador. Students will also visit five of the Galapagos Islands and participate in a volcano walk, enjoy a snorkeling activity where they'll see penguins, flamingos, sea lions, and iguanas, and visit the Charles Darwin Research Station. To see a more detailed description and daily breakdown of the tour, please visit http://www.eftours.com/eLiterature/DBD/M/GPI.pdf. Dates for the trip are slated from June 15 to June 27 and subject to minor date changes.

Holiday Closure
Please make note of the M-A Guidance Office and College and Career Center closure for the holiday break from Friday, December 18 through January 4.
We strongly encourage students to plan accordingly in their inquiries for applications support and to take advantage of their vacation to rest, rejuvenate and spend time with their families. The M-A Guidance Office and College and Career Center closure is consistent with the typical university admissions offices' schedule. Counselors can answer questions and assist with applications upon our return on January 5.
Please note that level changes will be considered if space permits at the semester, between December 14, 2015 and January 8, 2016. Please see your Guidance Counselor. ~ The Guidance Office

Girls Varsity Volleyball
YOWZA! Two more thrilling victories and the Bears (26-7) are now on their way to the Northern California Finals for the second year in a row. The X-factor this week was the pack of loyal fans who cheered the team to a three-set home court victory over Lowell (26-24, 25-17, 25-13) and then, defying all rationality, spent their Saturday night traveling to and from Turlock to inspire the upset of #2-ranked Pitman (26-28, 25-21, 25-20, 25-22). THANK YOU!!!
In the Lowell match, Kirby Knapp set the stage with 32 assists, 10 digs, 2 kills and an ace. Jacqueline DiSanto powered 13 kills, 13 digs, 3 aces and 2 blocks. Alexa Roumeliotis served an ace and led the dig count with 14, while Lauren Hellermoved ever-closer to sophomore status with 6 kills and 2 digs. The middle was covered by Eliza Grover (4 kills, 6 digs, 1 block) and Courtney Foliaki (3 kills, 2 digs, 2 blocks). Back row props to Shauna Sabet (3 aces, 5 digs) and Kiana Sales (8 digs, 1 ace). Leanna Collins put down 4 kills to match her 4 digs. Special recognition goes to Kelsey Tonsfeldt, who came in for a short run and, in the space of minutes, delivered an ace, a block, a perfect pass and a hard-swinging kill.
Against Pitman, Knapp got another workout with 57 (!) assists, 18 digs and a block. Meanwhile Roumeliotis led the defense with 40 digs, 3 assists and an ace, and DiSanto kept pace with 19 kills, 24 digs and 4 aces. Grover added to the show of force with 11 kills, 12 digs, 2 blocks and 2 aces; Heller killed 10 and dug 2; and Foliaki stepped up with 9 kills, 4 digs and a team-high 2.5 blocks. Sales delivered with 15 digs and a block, and Sabet was her usual steady self with 13 digs and the team's best passing of the night. Chloe Johnson (6 awesome digs) and Rachel Gerber (1 perfect kill) balanced the team. The greatest excitement of the night was at the end of the 4th set, when the Bears were fighting back from a 17-21 deficit and both sides were looking a little court-weary. That's when Leanna Collins came off the bench and the Pitman Pride's nightmare was realized. Collins delivered 4 kills in rapid succession to seal the win. This team is AMAZING!
On Tuesday the Bears travel to Danville to duel against Monte Vista for the right to go to the State Championships. It's a "lovely" afternoon drive if you can make it. If not, be sure to convince any Danville-based family, friends, employees, acquaintances, or random people on the street to come out and cheer for M-A!

Cross County Congratulations to Annalisa Crowe for finishing 38th (out of 201 runners) in highly competitive Division 1 race at the California State Championships. The race was held on Saturday, November 28 at the 3.1 mile Woodward Park course in Fresno. Crowe was the first varsity girl to race at the State cross country meet for M-A since 2003. Crowe finished with a time of 18:37 which makes her the all-time fastest Bear at the State meet. She had a strong final mile, passing a dozen runners, and was the third fastest CCS runner in the race. This meet concludes the Bear's successful 2015 Cross Country season.

- Email proofread submissions by midnight Thursday to bearnotes@mabearspta.org.
- Please do not send attachments. Send article content in the body of the email.
- Include details such as the event, date, time, location, contact info, and URL.
- Consider including a Spanish translation of your article for critical info. (Please email BearNotes if you need help with translation.)
- All submissions are subject to editing by the PTA.
