It is time to brighten the holidays of families in need within the M-A community through the annual M-A Holiday Gift Drive. Last year we fulfilled the holiday wish lists of over 70 M-A families. We need your help again.
We are looking for families and groups to sponsor or adopt a needy family this season to help make their wishes come true. By participating in the M-A Holiday Gift Drive, your family, office, church, book club, sports team, scout troop, professional organization, church, and or social group can directly give to a family within our own M-A community.
As a donor, you will receive a wish list from an M-A family. The wish lists include names, ages, sizes, favorite colors and toy requests to make your shopping fun and easy. Our goal is to provide $30 gifts to family members 18 and under plus a gift card for the family. Gifts should include a toy for small children. Wrapped gifts will be dropped off at M-A on the morning of Monday, December 14, 2015.
To become a donor, sign up here. You will receive shopping tips, drop-off information and a link to your family's wish-list around the 4th of December. You can also access the link by going to mabears.org under About Us > Community Outreach.
If you find you would like to be a part of the gift drive, but do not have the time or opportunity, monetary donation of any amount are accepted and will go directly to buying gifts. Monetary donations can be dropped off at the M-A main office. Please make checks payable to Holiday Gift Drive.

Canned Food Drive 2015: Ready, Set, Can!
The annual canned food drive kicked off Monday, November 9. This is a chance for the M-A community to rally around the growing number of San Mateo County residents who cannot afford enough food to provide for themselves and their families. According to the Second Harvest Food Bank website, 1 in 4 people in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties are at risk for hunger. Many of them are children, and some are our neighbors, classmates, or acquaintances.
To help alleviate hunger and draw attention to the hunger problem in our midst, the Leadership class coordinates an annual, award-winning canned food drive. This year M-A is again partnering with Second Harvest to ensure that families continue to have access to food sources beyond the canned food drive. Here are ways that you can help:
- When shopping for your family, please add a few extra cans to your cart and drop them into the Second Harvest Food Bank (SHFB) barrels. M-A students will be handing out the list of most-needed items requested by Second Harvest.
- Consider donating online here. Your gift will be properly credited to the M-A outreach effort.
- Some students conduct food drives in their neighborhoods: encourage yours to start that tradition!
- Every student is encouraged to sign up for canning. Students do not have to be in the Leadership class to participate. Students can sign up in room B-21, or contact Mr. Amoroso at mamoroso@seq.org.
- If you would like to receive food, please leave a message on an anonymous M-A voicemail at 650-322-5311, ext. 58669.
M-A is proud to announce this year's newest partner in the fight against hunger, our neighbors at Facebook! Facebook is supplying all of the reusable grocery bags that will be used to pack up all of the food that is given away on Distribution Day at Ecumenical Hunger Program in East Palo Alto on December 5.

Cross County The Bears varsity teams both competed in the Division 1 CCS Championships on Saturday, November 14 at Crystal Springs. The Bears achieved many personal best times, had a few heartbreaking results, and will be represented by an individual runner, Annalisa Crowe, at the California State Championships in two weeks.
The varsity girls placed 3rd out of 19 teams, narrowly missing 2nd place by 6 points to Monta Vista (89 vs. 95 points). Unfortunately, only the first and second place teams advance to the state championships. On the positive side, Annalisa Crowe finished with a strong kick to place second overall in the race, the Bears had 3 runners finish in the top 10 positions, and the Bears ran their 2nd fastest team time ever at Crystal Springs (97:01 minutes). The varsity girls were led by scorers Crowe (2), Madeleine Baier (8), Cat DePuy (10), Anna Leake (34), and Olivia Shane (41). Four of the Bears runners, Crowe, DePuy, Leake, and Shane earned personal best times on the Crystal Springs course reflecting the competitiveness of the squad. Olivia Tai (61) was the sixth runner for the team and Sara Osterberg was forced to withdraw mid-race due to an injury.
The varsity boys placed 11th in a field of 17 teams which was dominated by perennial powerhouse Bellarmine. The Bears were led by scorers Robert Lane (31), Andrew Salinas (40), Rohan DePuy (66), Kevin Conrad (68), and Luke Scandlyn (76). Lane also earned a personal best time. Andrew Tan (96) and Scott MacDonald (110) were the sixth and seventh runners for the team. With only two seniors on the squad, the Bears look forward to improving next season.
The season continues for Crowe who will prepare for the highly competitive Division 1 California State Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno on November 28. |
Boys Varsity Water Polo On Saturday, the Bears played 5th seed Leland in a CCS quarterfinal game at home. It was a defensive match that ended with the Bears winning 8-4. Mostyn Fero in set scored 3 goals and drew 4 kickouts, Jorge Pont had 1 goal and 3 assists, Alex Hakanson and Spencer Gran each had 1 goal and 1 assist and Jack Beasley and Nik Caryotakis each scored one goal in 6 on 5 situations. On defense, Beasley had 3 steals, Christian Huhn and Hakanson each had 2 steals while Pont had 1 steal. Noah Smith was tough in goal with 8 saves. With the win, the Bears advance to the semi-finals and face #1 seed Bellarmine on Tuesday at 5:30 pm at Bellarmine.

Girls Varsity Water Polo The Varsity girls ended their season on Thursday in the second round of the CCS tournament. They again went head to head with Woodside hoping to move on to the semis over the weekend. As in previous games, the Bears and Wildcats were within a goal of each other until the fourth quarter when Woodside kicked in their defense holding back the Bears from scoring and getting in 2 goals of their own. They won by a score of 3-6. Scoring for the Bears were Annabelle Paris with 2 and Julia Sherman with 1 goal. Kate Denend, Olivia Jackson, Kyra Sheeper and Ayla Huhn all helped with assists, steals and a block. Lauren McGinnis blocked 7 balls in goal.

Girls Varsity Volleyball
On Saturday night M-A rolled to a 3-set victory over Piedmont Hills (25-11, 25-20, 25-14), advancing to the CCS Semi-Finals and preparing to face the region's toughest competition in the week to come. The Piedmont Hills Pirates were no match for across-the-board solid performances from our pumped-up Lady Bears. Kirby Knapp, smooth and steady as ever, put up 39 assists along with 12 digs and an ace. Leanna Collins smacked 10 unanswerable kills and added 4 digs. Peninsula Athletic League 2015 MVP (wow!) Jacqueline DiSanto served 2 aces, dug 11 and killed 9. Alexa Roumeliotis had a couple of aces too, and wasn't letting anything drop in the back row, with 19 digs and an assist. The back row response team was rounded out by Kiana Sales (7 digs and 5 kills) and Shauna Sabet (5 digs and an ace). Honorary Freshman Lauren Heller had a great night with 5 kills and 5 digs. And from the middle, Eliza Grover had 6 kills and led on blocking, while Courtney Foliaki put down 5 kills and got in on the digging.
This Wednesday the Bears travel to San Jose to face the formidable San Benito Haybalers in a fight for a berth at next Saturday night's CCS Finals. GO BEARS!! |
Varsity Football M-A wrapped up the regular season with a convincing win over crosstown rival Woodside High by a score of 59 -34. Josh Lepulu rounded out the Bears scoring with a 43 yard touchdown run. The defense was led by Ben Stanley with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery and Christian Wiseman with 8 tackles. The Bears sacked Woodside quarterbacks 3 times, twice by Papadakis and once by Marcus Gershenberg. The Bears finished the regular season with a record of 6-4 going 6-1 in its final seven games. The Bears will host their 1st CCS play-off game this Friday night against San Benito at Coach Parks Field at 7pm. Come out and cheer on the Bears!!

JV Football The M-A JV football team ended their season on a high note with a great total team effort against Woodside High School, their perpetual arch-rival. The team was firing on all cylinders as Spencer Corona threw for 200+ yards and caught a 40 yard pass, Jhavante Hill ran for major yardage and scored a touchdown, along with a score by Joey Olshausen on a great catch. The defense swarmed and overran the Woodside offensive line sacking their quarterback 10+ times and hurrying him on almost every throw. Feleti Malupo and Dimitri Sakalia were notable stand out among many too numerous to mention. The final score was M-A 28, Woodside 10, and reflected the amazing growth that took place this year with this team. Huge thanks go to our Coaches, Players and Fans! Go, Bears!!
