M-A High School English Language Development Tutors Needed!

No experience necessary! Volunteers will work with two to three M-A students with the goal of helping them improve in spoken and written English. Over the course of a semester, you will get to know the students and see their progress. This is a very rewarding program for both students and their tutors. Volunteers do not need foreign language experience and the ELD teacher will give you a plan for each class meeting. Volunteers are needed on Thursdays at 9:40 to 11:20 am.

If you are interested, please email colleen_anderson@comcast.net.
CannedFoodDriveCanned Food Drive 2015: Ready, Set, Can
!

The annual canned food drive kicks off on Monday, November 9. This is a chance for the M-A community to rally around the growing number of San Mateo County residents who cannot afford enough food to provide for themselves and their families. According to the Second Harvest Food Bank website, 1 in 4 people in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties are at risk for hunger. Many of them are children, and some are our neighbors, classmates, or acquaintances.

To help alleviate hunger and draw attention to the hunger problem in our midst, the Leadership class coordinates an annual, award-winning canned food drive. This year M-A is again partnering with Second Harvest to ensure that families continue to have access to food sources beyond the canned food drive. Here are ways that you can help:
  • When shopping for your family, please add a few extra cans to your cart and drop them into the Second Harvest Food Bank (SHFB) barrels. M-A students will be handing out the list of most-needed items requested by Second Harvest.
  • Consider donating online here. Your gift will be properly credited to the M-A outreach effort.
  • Some students conduct food drives in their neighborhoods: encourage yours to start that tradition!
  • Every student is encouraged to sign up for canning. Students do not have to be in the Leadership class to participate. Students can sign up in room B-21 to sign up, or contact Mr. Amoroso at mamoroso@seq.org.
  • If you would like to receive food, please leave a message on an anonymous M-A voicemail at 650-322-5311, ext. 58669.
MA is proud to announce this year
's newest partner in the fight against hunger, our neighbors at Facebook! Facebook is supplying all of the reusable grocery bags that will be used to pack up all of the food that is given away on Distribution Day at Ecumenical Hunger Program in East Palo Alto on December 5.

Questions can be directed to Dianne Child and Sue Olson at feedourfamilies@mabearspta.org. Thank you for joining the fight against hunger!
CSFCalifornia Scholarship Federation Week

California Scholarship Federation (CSF) is a program that promotes and recognizes students with above-average grades. In order to become a member, the student must submit an application each semester the student is eligible. A point system specified in the CSF state by-laws establishes the membership requirements. Benefits for life or 100% members include recognition at M-A Senior Awards Night and in the M-A Graduation Program. Applications and course list are available on the M-A CSF webpage. From Monday, November 16 through Friday, November 20, students should turn in their applications during lunch in front of the green/Library. This application process is for spring 2015 grades. The submitted application packet must include:
  • Completed CSF application
  • $5 application fee in cash or a check made payable to M-A High School
  • Copy of the previous semester's report card or transcript. (A copy of a transcript can now be printed from your student's Infinite Campus account. Sign in and select Reports beneath your student's name. DO NOT GO TO THE GUIDANCE OFFICE FOR YOUR TRANSCRIPT!)
Please contact Kim Steere with questions.
GiftDriveHoliday Gift Drive

It is time to brighten the holidays of families in need within the M-A community through the annual M-A Holiday Gift Drive. Last year we fulfilled the holiday wish lists of over 70 M-A families. We need your help again.

We are looking for families and groups to sponsor or adopt a needy family this season to help make their wishes come true. By participating in the M-A Holiday Gift Drive, your family, office, church, book club, sports team, scout troop, professional organization, church, and or social group can directly give to a family within our own M-A community.

As a donor, you will receive a wish list from an M-A family. The wish lists include names, ages, sizes, favorite colors and toy requests to make your shopping fun and easy. Our goal is to provide $30 gifts to family members 18 and under plus a gift card for the family. Gifts should include a toy for small children. Wrapped gifts will be dropped off at M-A on the morning of Monday, December 14, 2015

To become a donor, sign up here. You will receive shopping tips, drop-off information and a link to your family's wish-list around the 4th of December. You can also access the link by going to mabears.org under special events.

If you find you would like to be a part of the gift drive, but do not have the time or opportunity, monetary donation of any amount are accepted and will go directly to buying gifts. Monetary donations can be dropped off at the M-A main office. Please make checks payable to Holiday Gift Drive.

Thank you for your support! If you have any questions, please email magiftdrive@seq.org.
nov-10Nov 10 - Minimum Day & Special Activities

November 10 is scheduled as a Minimum Day at M-A, and there are special activities planned for each class.
  • 9th Grade: Students will be on campus from 8:45 am until 12:20 pm and engage in a variety of activities, including tutorial sessions with their academic core teachers and a general presentation for the entire class that will continue to support their transition to high school.
  • 10th and 11th Grades: Students will be on campus from 8:45 am until 12:20 pm, and will start preparing for statewide testing by taking Smarter Balanced interim assessments. Testing will be in the subjects of English/Language Arts and Math. Results on these practice assessments will be available by December, and will let us know areas on which to focus as we prepare for Smarter Balanced testing in April.
  • 12th Grade: Students will select from a variety of activities in which to participate. Senior activities will take place from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm. There will be field trips to local community colleges, or students can stay on campus to get help with college applications and their personal statements.
All students will also participate in school-wide surveys that will provide a student voice on issues facing the school.

As announced in previous BearNotes, the new date for the Junior Parent College Night will be Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at 7pm in the PAC Cafeteria, with simultaneous interpretation in Spanish (instead of November 17, 2015). The Sophomore Parent Night will be on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at 6:30pm in the Library, also with simultaneous interpretation in Spanish.

Information for Juniors: In November, I will be making rounds to visit Juniors in their English classes to talk to them about preparing for the college application process. I will continue to communicate with Juniors throughout this year and next year via Naviance and School Loop, so please encourage them to check these and their "seq.org" account regularly. Much of the information I will share with Juniors will also be available on the CCC website and Naviance. For example, information about admissions testing is available on the CCC website, including a comparison of the New SAT vs. the ACT. You may also download a copy of the Junior Year Calendar at the CCC Website.

In the second semester, there will be an optional weekly series of lunchtime presentations in the College/Career Center for Juniors. These lunchtime presentations will include topics like, "How Do I Start My College Search?", the UCs, CSU's, Private Colleges, Personal Statements and Supplemental Questions, and more. Juniors are encouraged to bring their lunch while attending these presentations.

I also invite students and parents to attend Maria Furtado's talk on Thursday, November 19th at 7pm, which is part of the M-A Parent Education Series. Ms. Furtado is the Executive Director of Colleges that Change Lives, and she will be speaking on "Finding the Right Fit" for college. Simultaneous Spanish interpretation is available.

The week of Oct. 26, the Bears hosted Carlmont for their last league game of the season, winning 26-8. The coaches decided to only play the seniors (Jack Beasley, James CalhoonChristian Huhn, Alex Hakanson, Mostyn Fero, Spencer Gran, Jorge Pont, Henry Choi-Freeman, and Jackson Goudey), letting this great group of friends have one last fun game together. In the 4th quarter, goalie Goudey traded positions with Choi-Freeman. Goudey scored a goal from the field and Choi-Freeman had a save in goal.

This week the PAL Tournament was hosted by M-A. On Tuesday, the Bears crushed Carlmont 26-4. Scoring was led by Pont (5 goals, 2 assists) and Hakanson (4 goals and 3 assists). Gran contributed 3 goals, Choi-Freeman, Caryotakis, Calhoon and McMillan had 2 goals each while Huhn and Paquin each chipped in one. Chris Lobdell and Finn DePuy (bumped up to varsity for CCS play) each scored 2. Goudey had 4 saves in goal; Smith had 6 saves. In Round 2, the Bears beat Mills 13-5. Hakanson and Pont each had 2 goals and 2 assists, Maxwell had 2 and an assist, and Caryotakis, Calhoon, Huhn, Fero, Gran, Paquin and Choi-Freeman each scored. Goudey had 4 saves, Raff had 3 saves.

In the final on Saturday afternoon, the Bears played Menlo in front of a vocal crowd. The game got off to a nervous start and despite many good shots on goal, the Bears were down 1-4 at the end of the first quarter. Play was solid and clean (only three kickouts), but a number of bad passes resulting in turnovers hurt. Perhaps the biggest factor in the game was Menlo's goalie; even a penalty shot by Hakanson fired low and just inside the post was blocked. Caryotakis and Hakanson each scored 2, Huhn, Fero and Pont each scored 1. Raff had 3 saves, Smith had 4 saves. The final score was 7-11, and the Bears took 2nd place in the PAL Tournament. CCS play begins this week and M-A will host some quarterfinal games on Saturday, November 14.

 Girls Varsity Tennis
The M-A Girls Varsity tennis team capped another dominant run through the Peninsula Athletic League competition. In addition to winning the regular-season Bay Division championship, the Bears swept the singles and doubles titles at the PAL individual championships Thursday at Burlingame. Lanie Van Linge, M-A No. 1 singles player, had little trouble beating Burlingame in the singles title match, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Van Linge, a sophomore, had plenty of motivation to capture the PAL singles championship. She advanced to the finals as a freshman last year, but lost to eventual Central Coast Section finalist Mariko Iinuma of Hillsdale. Winning the PAL title this season, "was definitely the goal," Van Linge said.

There was no question an M-A team would win the doubles crown as Bears filled both spots in the championship match. In the end, it was Julia Marks and Yvette Leung topping teammates Sally Carlson and Julia Chan, 6-1, 6-4. Carlson, a senior among two sophomores and a freshman, said, "I think it's really good" (M-A's success this season). "It's a great way to leave the program." The season isn't over yet. Next week, the MA Varsity tennis team participates in the CCS tournament. Go Bears!

2015 PAL Champs!!! Yes, it's still true. Despite Tuesday's disappointing loss to a bunch of fired-up home-court Scots (23-25, 16-25, 26-28), the Bears are still the undisputed champions of the 2015 Pacific Athletic League. The team will play in the CCS Quarter-Finals on Saturday November 14 at 7 pm in Ayers Gym.

One might argue that the occasional loss helps build character. But one might also want to leave that loss behind and focus on the FABULOUS Senior Night celebration match against Half Moon Bay on Thursday. Emotions overflowed for our six beloved seniors, and it was they who took the court and masterfully swept the Cougars 25-10, 25-20, 25-13. Let's start with the stunning team captain Leanna Collins, who topped herself with a phenomenal 48% kill rate (12 total) and put up a couple of blocks to boot. Tatum Maines activated the springs in her feet and put down 9 kills to balance her 10 digs and a stealthy ace. Courtney Foliaki stoked up the positivity to contribute 5 kills, 3 digs, and two dizzying aces. Outside hitter Kelsey Tonsfeldt was steady and graceful on the court, killing 4 and acing 2. Shauna Sabet stores grit under that headband, and she whipped it out for 2 aces and 12 digs.  And the delightful Rachel Gerber rallied the team, rounding out the kill count and putting up a whole lot of we-got-this attitude. A couple of juniors had to slip in here and there - Kirby "under the radar" Knapp with 33 perfect-placement assists, and Kiana Sales with an ace and a bunch of digs. But really, folks, this is the moment to recognize, celebrate, and get your Kleenex out. The Seniors rock and we're going to miss them something awful.

Fortunately it's not quite over. Let's fill the stands on Saturday night!

 Girls JV Volleyball
What a finish! The JV team went out victorious as they won their final two matches of the season. First up was Carlmont who just weeks earlier had beaten the Bears. Fueled by a desire to win this time around, the Bears took the first set in a point-by-point duel filled with dynamic kills, awesome assists, memorable serving and countless digs in a 26-24 victory. But the Scots weren't ready to take a loss on their home court and worked up a comfortable 9 point lead to 11-20 in the second set. Lights out for the Bears? Hardly! Lila Roginski came to the service line and through a series of aces and unbelievable, fast-moving Bears teamwork stunned the Scots by bringing the score to 18-20. The final points were fiercely fought because the Scots refused to take the loss, but the Bears' kills, blocks, digs and serving overpowered them and MA took the match 25-23!! Amazing win against a very strong team!! Thursday's final home game against Half Moon Bay squad was special because every member of our team hit the floor, gave their best, and contributed to the win (25-21, 25-10)! The JV team and their parents would like to give a public shout-out of appreciation to Coach Joan Gerber and Assistant Coach Lauryn Anderson, who have kept the team rolling and well-oiled day after day since September! Thanks coaches--we are grateful for your dedication and commitment to our team!

The Bears varsity teams both advanced to the CCS Championships based on their results at the PAL League Finals held at Crystal Springs on Saturday, November 7. In addition to many personal best times, the Bears teams came away with 3 first place team results and individual Bears runners won all 3 of the girl's races.

Annalisa Crowe continued to dominate the varsity girls' field, winning her race by almost 30 seconds and further narrowing the gap to a nearly 30 year old M-A record on the Crystal Springs course. While Half Moon Bay (HMB) set a fast pace in the first mile, they eventually faded and the entire Bears varsity squad of seven runners finished ahead of HMB's 4th place runner. The varsity girls beat their nearest PAL competitor by a wide 42-104 margin and were led by scorers Annalisa Crowe (1), Cat DePuy (3), Madeleine Baier (5), Anna Leake (16), and Olivia Shane (17). The junior varsity girls, despite having a depleted squad of only 6 runners, easily handled their nearest competitor Terra Nova by a 28-55 score. The junior varsity girls were led by another first place finisher, Chloe Mauvais (1), as well as Abby Lindquist (2), Elizabeth Muenzen (5), Molly Davis (9), and Aliza Katzman (11). Although the frosh-soph girls placed 4th in their race, Cricket Gorey (1) earned an individual first place result by a 41 second margin. She was supported by Bears scorers Maggie Collins (12), Maile Coberly (16), Meghan Child (27), and Alison Snyder (32).

The varsity boys placed 3rd out of 16 teams in a field dominated by Half Moon Bay. The Bears were led by scorers Robert Lane (9), Andrew Salinas (11), Kevin Conrad (15), Rohan DePuy (16), and Luke Scandlyn (30). Lane and Salinas managed to break up an HMB sweep of the race and both finished in an elite group below the 17 minute mark. The frosh/soph boys outdistanced 12 other teams to win their race by 42 points. The frosh/soph boys were led by scorers Cameron Plume (2), Karl Zahlaas-Liebner (3), Nicolas Hafer (5), Justin Li (11), and Kyle Conrad (14). The junior varsity boys earned a solid 2nd place to the Half Moon Bay squad and were led by scorers Max Colbert (4), Lukas Rash (6), Tommy Bohac (8), Alan Beilin (15), and Henry Morrissey (18).

The varsity team's next competition will be against their Division 1 rivals in the CCS Championships on Saturday, November 14 at Crystal Springs in Belmont. The top 2 girls teams and top 3 boys teams in Division 1 will advance to the state championships.

  JV Football
In a closely contested battle, the MA JV team dropped a close decision to the Burlingame Panthers 14-13. The team controlled most of the action for most of the game and statistically won, however a couple of close plays were all the difference. Touchdowns were scored by Jhavante Hill and Noa Ngalu and the entire team participated in a great defense of effort. Final game for the JV team is at Woodside at 4 pm on Friday.

  Varsity Football
M-A ended league play Friday night with a 14 - 0 loss to Burlingame resulting in a three way tie for first place in the PAL Bay Division between M-A, Burlingame and Sacred Heart Prep. M-A's defense held Burlingame well below their season average of  over 30 points a game. The defense was led by Christian Wiseman with 12 tackles, Marcus Gershenberg with 9 tackles and a quarterback sack, Bryce Rodgers with 8 tackles and a quarterback sack and Stavro Papadakis with 8 tackles. Wiseman also caused a fumble that Rodgers recovered. On offense, Jordan Mims ran for 78 yards and Justin Friedsam caught 5 passes for 60 yards. Congratulations to the Bears for winning a share of first place in the tough PAL Bay Division. Come out to cheer on the Bears in their final regular season game against cross-town rival Woodside, Friday night at 7:00 at Woodside.

  Girls Varsity Water Polo
On Tuesday the girls faced Carlmont in the first round of the PAL tournament. The Bears went scoreless in the first quarter but came back, bagging 3 goals in the 2nd ending the half up 3-1. Intensity was then ramped up by CHS but MA ended the game winning 5-4. Olivia Jackson scored 2 goals and had a steal, Kate Denend 1 goal, 1 assist and a steal, Maddie Maxwell 1 goal, 2 assists and 1 steal, Annabelle Paris rounded out the scoring with a goal and 2 steals. Ayla Huhn had 1 assist and 2 steals and Kyra Sheeper 1 assist and 3 steals. Lauren McGinnis saved 7 shots in goal.

The second game of the PAL was against Burlingame on Thursday. After losing to them earlier in the season the Bears had nothing to lose and jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. Burlingame answered back with 3 as well tying it up. The Bears then trailed the remainder of the game trying hard to find the back of the net. Lauren McGinnis and Alexa Finn fended off 5 shots in goal but Bears could not come back and lost 6-11. Paris scored 3 goals, Jackson 2 goals and Maxwell 1 goal. Sheeper again was instrumental by stealing 3 balls as well as Denand, Huhn and Sherman all getting a steal.

The last game of the PAL was Saturday with the Bears playing Woodside for 3rd place. The last time the Bears met Woodside they pulled out a W but knew this was going to be a battle; and a battle it was! After regulation play the game was tied 5-5. It remained 5-5 until the 4th overtime period, now in sudden death, when the Wildcats lobbed in a goal winning the game 6-5. Our MA girls played hard the entire game--Sheeper was a dominant force on defense, stealing 4 balls, blocking 1 shot and assisting another. Denend and Sherman helped the defense with a steal and a block as well. Top scorer was Jackson with 3 goals, 1 steal, 1 block, Maxwell with 1 goal, 1 assist and 2 steals and Paris 1 goal, 1 steal. McGinnis fended off 9 shots in goal.

The Bears will begin the CCS tournament Tuesday. Check the website calendar for venue and times.

Become a mentor to a talented first-generation college student. The Peninsula College Fund, which provides four-year college scholarships, 1-1 adult mentors, college and career success training, and summer internship support to low-income, first-generation college students, is seeking volunteers to serve as mentors to college students. Mentors offer advice, support, and role modeling to a student throughout the student's college career. Prospective mentors can learn more about this life-changing experience at our website. This highly effective organization serves mid-peninsula high school students from Palo to Redwood City.
