Nov 10 - Minimum Day & Special Activities
November 10 is scheduled as a Minimum Day at M-A, and there are special activities planned for each class. - 9th Grade: Students will be on campus from 8:45 until 12:20 and engage in a variety of activities, including tutorial sessions with their academic core teachers and a general presentation for the entire class that will continue to support their transition to high school.
- 10th and 11th Grades: Students will be on campus from 8:45 until 12:20, and will start preparing for statewide testing by taking Smarter Balanced interim assessments. Testing will be in the subjects of English/Language Arts and Math. Results on these practice assessments will be available by December, and will let us know areas on which to focus as we prepare for Smarter Balanced testing in April.
- 12th Grade: Students will select from a variety of activities in which to participate. There will be field trips to local community colleges, or students can stay on campus to get help with college applications and their personal statements. Senior activities will take place from 9:00 until Noon.
All students will also participate in schoolwide surveys that will provide a student voice on issues facing the school. More details will follow in the coming weeks. ~ Steve Lippi, Instructional Vice Principal |

The NEW SAT: What's New?
You will probably learn more than you care to know, but here goes:
Structural Changes - The NEW SAT has fewer sections but takes more time (140 minutes to 180 minutes). There is no longer a penalty for wrong answers (4 possible answers instead of 5) and calculators are no longer allowed on one of the two math sections. For us older folks, you will most appreciate that the scoring system has returned back to 1600 from 2400. We all have a feel for a 1530 but who ever knew what a 2170 was?
Why Change - The decision to change, according to Time Magazine, was a business decision. The ACT is more achievement based and 20 states were using it as part of their analysis of student progress. The NEW SAT is based on the new Common Core content and the CollegeBoard is hoping to be more competitive.
Math Changes - A bigger emphasis on Algebra and Algebra 2 with Geometry being deemphasized. A lot more applied mathematics with many more word problems and more statistics and probability. The big push is in the area of slope. Half of Calculus is about slope (or change) and the new SAT is testing the understanding of slope in many different ways (without the need to know Calculus.) Also new is simple trigonometry and complex numbers.
English Changes (by Ms. Strub) - The Reading section no longer includes vocabulary questions, and focuses on longer passages that may include graphics. The Writing and Language section requires students to correct grammatical errors as they are embedded in whole passages, rather than as discrete sentences. The essay is now focused on passage analysis rather than argumentation.
Common Core Comment - While M-A has transitioned totally to Common Core, some of the new SAT content was not taught to your son or daughter initially three years ago as most schools began teaching Common Core last year.
Our next article will tell you how to register for SAT Prep classes. If you haven't already joined the list of interested families, please send the following information to gwhitnah@seq.org:
- student name
- student email address
- parent(s) email addresses
- the class (0 period or 3:20 pm) your son or daughter might be interested in it
Thanks in advance as this will help with our planning.

Boys Varsity Water Polo
The week began with a visit from London's St. Paul's school water polo team. The Bears beat them by a lopsided score of 20-5, but mended fences with a potluck dinner on the pool deck. The London boys were housed by M-A players for two nights. On Wednesday, the Bears faced undefeated Woodside in PAL play. The Bears beat a much improved Woodside team 17-4. Mostyn Fero had 7 goals, Nik Caryotakis had 3 goals and a steal, Alex Hakanson had 2 goals, an assist, and 2 steals, Jorge Pont had 1 goal, 5 assists, and 3 steals, Jack Beasley had 1 goal, 3 assists and 2 steals, James Calhoon had 1 goal and 1 steal, Christian Huhn had 1 goal, 1 assist, and 1 steal, and Henry Choi-Freeman had a goal. On Friday and Saturday the Bears co-hosted the prestigious North-South Challenge which pits the top 8 northern California teams against the top 8 Southern California teams. The Bears' first game on Friday was against Harvard-Westlake (#1 in country). The Bears put up a valiant fight, but lost 4-17. Huhn, Hakanson and Hugo McMillan scored. In goal Raff had 3 saves and Goudey had 1. Friday night's game was against Campolindo (placed 5th). A series of unfortunate circumstances, including the loss of Beasley to foul trouble early put Campo up by 4 at the end of the first quarter. The Bears won the next three quarters, but ultimately lost 9-12. Key contributors were Fero with 3 goals and a steal, Huhn with 2 goals, 1 assist and a steal, Hakanson with 2 goals, Pont with 1 goal, 1 assist and 5 steals, and Andy Maxwell with a goal. |
Boys JV Water Polo The Bears played in the very competitive NorCal JV tournament on Friday and Saturday and beat Valley Christian 10-3 but lost to Sacred Heart Prep, Davis and Serra. Tournament standouts were Chris Lobdell (6 goals, 7 assists, 17 steals), Finn Depuy (8 goals, 3 steals), and Cooper Gran (4 goals, 5 steals). The Bears jumped to an 11-3 halftime lead over Woodside on Wednesday and cruised to a 17-10 PAL win. Everyone got into the action, with Finn Depuy leading the offense with 6 goals and 2 assists. Chris Lobdell (3 goals, 3 assists, 5 steals), Cooper Gran (3 goals, 2 assists, 3 steals), and Shon Alimukhamedov (3 goals, 2 assists, 1 steal) added firepower. Girls Varsity Water Polo
On Wednesday the varsity girls faced Woodside HS at their pool for the 6th PAL game of the season. MA came out strong with not much opposition from the Wildcats as the half ended with MA up 3-0. Action picked up the third quarter with Woodside scoring 1 goal and 2 more in the fourth quarter. They were not going down without a fight. Friday the varsity girls traveled across town to meet up with Menlo. In a non-league matchup, the Knights were tough staying just a goal behind for most of the match. The Bears were able to pull away by 2 in the fourth quarter ending the game with a 7-5 win over the Knights. Maxwell scored 3 goals and had 1 assist, Jackson 2 goals, 2 steals, Paris had 1 goal, 2 assists, 2 steals and a block, Sheeper 1 goal, 1 assist 1 block and 5 critical steals. Girls JV Water Polo
The JV girls' team had a strong showing Oct 21 at Woodside High School with an impressive 9 goals scored! However, Woodside High managed to win 10-9, in spite of a fierce defense by our M-A Bears. It was an intense and physical game, but M-A held the lead in quarters 2 and 3. Goals were scored by Taylor Shantz, Makenzie Hazard, Ally Feeley, Grace Dowley and Claire Bozdog. Dowley led the scoring with 5 of the 9 goals scored. Assisting with some of the team's goals were Yarelli Moran, Suzuka Kawaguchi and Claire Bozdog. Defense was a challenge as Woodside sprinters twice made it to the goal before the defense could get there - scoring 2 goals. Goalkeeper Cameron Bozdog held up well under intense pressure, blocking at least 3 shots in the game.
Come cheer on the M-A Water Polo teams' last home games on Wednesday October 28, starting at 3 pm. |

Olsen also provided 15 assists to complement 28 from Knapp. Blocks were shared among Foliaki (2), Grover (2), Collins (1.5) and Rachel Gerber. There wasn't a whole lot to dig, but Roumeliotis, Sales and Knapp popped up what they got with 7 each. Digs from Roumeliotis (22), Sales (16) and DiSanto (9) were matched by blocks from Foliaki, Grover and Knapp. DiSanto revved things up with 19 kills, Collins put down 12, and Grover and Heller submitted 5 each. The domination was facilitated by assists from Knapp (37), Olsen (7) and Roumeliotis (3) and decorated with aces from DiSanto (3), Sales (2), and Grover. This week the Bears host Burlingame on Tuesday(6:15) and Sequoia on Thursday (5:15). Let's fill the stands! |

Tuesday's away match at Hillsdale was an easy win in 2 games, but on Thursday the Aragon Dons came into our gym and took the first game (16-25). The Bears fought back and surprised the Dons by winning the second (25-20). The third set went point for point but in the end the win went to the Dons (13-15). Friday the team traveled to St. Francis where the Lancers took the first game 8-25. The Bears dug in and put up a strong fight, making St. Francis work for their eventual victory (23-25). On Saturday the Bears won back-to-back matches against Mills Freshman (25-8, 25-19), Sequoia JV (25-22, 25-13) and Aragon Freshman (25-22, 25-13), which led them to the finals where they played a rematch against the tournament host Aragon. The match went to three games and the third set was a real nail biter and the Bears took second place in the tournament! Congratulations to our JV Bears! The games this week are at home - Tuesday (vs Burlingame) and Thursday (vs Sequoia) - so come on out and support your team!

JV Football Displaying their growing confidence in each other and their abilities as a squad, the M-A JV Football Team continued their winning ways in conference play against Sacred Heart Prep on Friday at Coach Parks Field winning 28-7. Firing on all cylinders, the offensive line paved the way for the "Committee of Running Backs" that was chaired this week by Noa Nglau, with multiple scores and several 25+ yard runs, Jhavante Hill with a 60 yard TD romp and tough defense, Daniel Heimuli with a consistent attack against the defense, and Gary Carter and Kabir Lubana finding daylight. QB Spencer Corona completed 8 of 12 pass attempts for a number of first downs and kicked 4 PATs with the kicking unit of Center Ryan Buck and Holder Anthony Siri who are now on the season an amazing 22 out of 23 point after attempts. The defense was a complete team effort with a blocked field goal attempt, multiple interceptions, gang tackles of any SHP runner approaching the line of scrimmage, tipped, deflected, or defensed passes, and a QB sack(s) on almost every SHP possession or drive. Adopt A Teacher Who Needs Your Support
Make a real difference for a teacher and his/her students by "adopting" a K-8 teacher in the Ravenswood District of East Palo Alto or east Menlo Park for a school year. Provide the teacher with encouraging notes or small gifts of appreciation, school supplies and support for two class parties. Financial commitment $500-600, time commitment very flexible. It's easy and fun to adopt a teacher with friends.

- Email proofread submissions by midnight Thursday to bearnotes@mabearspta.org.
- Please do not send attachments. Send article content in the body of the email.
- Include details such as the event, date, time, location, contact info, and URL.
- Consider including a Spanish translation of your article for critical info. (Please email BearNotes if you need help with translation.)
- All submissions are subject to editing by the PTA.
