Dear M-A families,

Make a Gift. Make a Difference. Make it a Great Day at M-A.

It's an exciting time at our remarkable public high school and your support is needed. Our dynamic new Principal is leading initiatives to serve our growing and diverse student body and prepare them for the complex world that awaits. The M-A High School Foundation for the Future is proud to be part of these efforts. We exist to ensure that all of our students have enriched academic experiences by supporting vital programs, personnel and services for every student need, interest and ability. This year we must raise $2.4 million to honor our commitment to M-A students.

Our community high school students rely on Foundation funds to foster across-the-board excellence. We support smaller classes, professional development, on-point electives and AP classes, college and career guidance and other critical programs. Every M-A student benefits from your donation, because your dollars stay here.

Your help this year is more crucial than ever. Please consider supporting M-A with a tax-deductible gift. You can visit www.mafoundation.org to donate online today.

All the students of Menlo-Atherton High School appreciate your support. They are our future, and we are their Foundation.

With appreciation,
Carolyn Tom, Co-President

Scott Lohmann, Co-President

Great Resources from the College and Career Center

In celebration of College and Career Day and the PSAT coming up on Oct. 14, here are a few great resources around exploring majors/careers and preparing for college. For additional links and information, visit the CCC website and log into Naviance.

Exploring Majors and Careers
Undecided about a major or career? Join the club! It is common for students to be unsure of what they would like to do. It is also fairly common for students to change their majors while in college and for adults to change careers several times in their lives. These websites connect majors with careers, but please know that in many, many cases, a person's major does not necessarily determine a career. There are many paths to a career.

Collegeboard.org's Big Future: Wondering what the difference is between majoring in Engineering Mechanics vs. Mechanical Engineering? This website gives profiles of hundreds of majors and careers in a teen-friendly way. This site can help you understand what a particular major is, what your college courses might look like, and which colleges offer that particular major.

What Can I Do With This Major?: The University of Tennessee at Knoxville put together a list of more than 80 majors that you can find at many universities. For each major, you can see a truly wide range of possible career paths related to that major. In addition, this site gives you some very helpful tips that are specific to your major in making you a successful candidate for a job.

Naviance Family Connection: Want to take a survey or questionnaire to help you figure out your strengths, interests and preferences for a possible career? Try the "StrengthsExplorer" or the "Career Interest Profiler" under the "About Me" tab in Naviance. The "Career Interest Profiler" survey can be reset and taken again multiple times, but the "StrengthsExplorer" cannot be reset, and can only be taken once. You can also explore the "Road Trip Nation" short videos to hear interesting and inspiring stories about how people from all walks of life came to the career they have today.

For additional resources on exploring careers, visit the "What Do I Major In?" section of the CCC website.

Preparing for College

College Admissions with Khan Academy: Like many of its instructional resources, the Khan Academy's video tutorials on the college application process are a great introduction to many topics, such as why college is important, how to make high school count, and exploring college options. The Khan Academy also provides free SAT preparation that can be personalized to your needs: current SAT (until Jan. 2016), and the "new" or redesigned SAT (starting Mar. 2016).

Did You Know?

Welcome to a new section in the PTA section of Bear Notes. Periodically we will highlight something new and interesting about M-A. This week we are featuring information about the food service at M-A. Did you know that there are four different locations to purchase lunch on campus with a total of 11 service lines? The average wait time to get food is only 7-8 minutes. Did you know the menu items include hot sandwiches, burritos, salads, cold sandwiches and other specialty main courses that change weekly? The total cost for a meal is $4.25. This includes a main item, fruit and drink. Also, you can prepay on your student's account. Menu information and how to download money onto a student's account can be found on the district website at http://www.seq.org/?id=109

Body Image Workshop - Love the Skin You're In®

With founder and activist Brie Mathers
Thursday, November 5, 2015, 7:00-8:30 pm
Woodside High School, Multi-Use Room (MUR)

Has Instagram got your teen glued to his/her phone? Love the Skin You're In® unites families in exploring the self-destructive doubt that emerges out of the commoditization of our bodies. Through media literacy, young women build body esteem and reclaim resilience together, while boys find power in respect and empathy. Join us for a mindful journey in which we can move beyond the pursuit of an elusive "hot body" and rediscover how to source our lives from within.

Activist Brie Mathers has spoken to over 60,000 young women, inspiring them to reclaim their minds and bodies from ubiquitous media idealizations. Brie has been featured in The San Jose Mercury News, Coastal Living, Origin, and on LA Talk Radio and CTV News. She's the author of Freedom to Blossom and is currently working on a new documentary, You Got This - Owning Body Image.

Parents, students, faculty/staff and community members welcome! Free admission. Spanish interpretation will be available.
M-A Robotics

Join the Robotics Team

Robotics is "the sport of the mind." The M-A Robotics Team competes in the FIRST Robotics Competition, facing off against teams from around the world. On our team, students are responsible for all aspects of the building process. Technical jobs include machining, wiring, programming, and 3D modeling. Students also learn how to raise funds, get sponsors, and promote the team. No experience is necessary. In fact, the majority of our students join with very little prior knowledge of robotics, and learn under the guidance of veteran students and mentors - professional engineers from companies like Google who volunteer their time to help out. Our alumni have used the skills they've learned on the team to win scholarships, get into college, and land jobs.

This fall, the team is working on a robotic t-shirt cannon. Come get involved! Contact the team at join@team766.com.

Keep M-A Athletics Strong

Your donations to M-A Boosters bridge the large gap between the funds provided by our district and what is really needed to run the top-performing sports program that we have today. Donations pay for coaches, uniforms and equipment - as well as new sports that don't receive district funding.

PLEASE help us meet our goals and support our 50 athletic teams and more than 950 athletes. There are many ways to support the athletes and the programs - donations, volunteer your time or purchase BearWear.

 Boys Varsity Water Polo
This week the Bears easily notched another league win against Half Moon Bay by a score of 17-2. In set, Mostyn Fero scored 6 goals. Jack Beasley, James Calhoon, Christian Huhn, and Jorge Pont each scored twice while Nik Caryotakis and Hugo McMillan each scored once. Carmeron Raff had 7 saves the first half and held HMB to two goals. Jackson Goudey manned the goal in the second half but saw little action (2 saves) as the HMB squad fatigued.

The Bears have a busy week ahead. On Monday, the team will scrimmage St. Paul's school (London) and then will "billet" the players in their homes for two nights. On Wednesday the team travels to undefeated Woodside for a league match and then on Friday and Saturday M-A co-hosts the prestigious North-South tournament with Sacred Heart and will face top-ranked Harvard-Westlake (Los Angeles) in their first game on Friday at 2:10 pm.

 Boys JV Water Polo
M-A unleased a torrent of 2nd and 3rd quarter goals to pull away from Half Moon Bay enroute to an 8-4 PAL victory. Cooper Gran (4 goals, 2 steals) and Chris Lobdell (2 goals, 4 assists, 6 steals) led the Bears. Other contributors included Nick Andrew (1 goal, 2 steals), Shon Alimukhamedov (2 assists, 1 steal), Liam Lutton (2 assists, 1 steal), Ben Ferrick (1 steal), and Aaron Zheng (1 goal). Otto Meyer turned away 3 shots in the goal as well.

 Girls Varsity Tennis
The M-A Girls Varsity tennis team is undefeated in league play 11-0! They beat Half Moon Bay 6-1 on Tuesday (10/13). Yvette Leung, Julia Marks, and Elise Kratzer prevailed in singles, and Julia Chang/Sarah TiemannBeata Brenner/Amanda Scandalios, and Erin Cole/Kate Perri succeeded in doubles. On Thursday (10/15), M-A also won 6-1 against Burlingame:

Halle Martinucci (Burlingame) def. Lanie Van Linge 0-1 retired
Yvette Leung def. Natalie Somers 6-2, 6-7, (2) 6-4
Julia Marks def. Sarah Sinatra 6-1, 6-2
Elise Kratzer def. Lindsey Schloetter 7-6, 6-0

Julia Chang/Sally Carlson def. Arisa Dintcho/Marie Blukher 6-0, 6-1
Beata Brenner/Natasha Auer def. Ashley Coskey/Priya Patel 6-3, 6-3
Libby Kirk/Laura Kirk def. Monica Millett/Eleni Rally 7-6, 6-0

After Lanie had to retire, the M-A girls knew that each match was vitally important and that anything less than maximum effort wouldn't get the job done. With three matches still on the courts and M-A trailing in all three, Burlingame was feeling that an upset of last season's champion and this year's undefeated leader was imminent. However, M-A's players, Leung, Kratzer, and Kirk and Kirk would not give in, showing tremendous resolve and finally prevailing in each of the final three matches!

 Girls JV Volleyball
The JV team cruised to an easy victory over Half Moon Bay in game one, only to have the Cougars put a scare put into them in the second. The entire team put in a solid effort to get this one done (25-8, 25-20)! Serving up aces were Elise Carlomagno (3), Emily Young (4) and Nicole Kang (1). Kang also led in kills (5), followed by Gabby Rubio (3) Carlomagno (2), Alicia Letvin (2), Camille Rowe (2), Kaile Prosser (2), Kaitlyn Tonsfeldt (2), Sarah Lehman (2), Young (1), Erica Fischer (1), and Kathryn Jones (1). The kills would have been impossible without assists from Young (13), Hannah Roitman (8), Kang (1) and Jones (1). Strong defensive play was seen in digs by Kang (6), Roginski (5), Rubio (3), Carlomagno (2), Prosser (2), Fischer (2) and one each from Roitman, Jones, Rowe and Carolyn Murphy.

On Thursday the squad traveled to Millbrae where the Vikings took control of the match and closed it out in two (17-25, 22-25), although the Bears put up a tough fight. Aces were served up by Roitman (3), Carlomagno (1), Young (1) and Rubio (1) and the Vikings were hard pressed to defend against Carlomagno who put down seven huge kills, along with Fischer (3), Rubio (2), Prosser (2) and Tonsfeldt (2) and one each from Letvin and Lehman. Assisting in those kills were Roitman (13) and Young (5). The Bears were tenacious and worked hard to keep the points close, popping up digs and making the Vikings scramble: Carlomagno (7), Roitman (5), Roginski (3), Fischer (2), Murphy (2), Jones (2), and Prosser, Tonsfeldt and Letvin each with one.

This week is a busy one for the Bears: Tuesday at Hillsdale, Thursday at home vs Aragon, Friday away at St. Francis and Saturday an all-day tournament at Aragon. Come on out and cheer on your Bears! They appreciate the support!

Defensively the Bears prevented Mountain View goals with numerous shots blocked by goalkeeper Cameron Bozdog. In game 2, the Bears lost 7-8 in a hard-fought game against Sequoia High School. Offense was impressive with goals scored by Grace Dowley (3 goals), Ally Feeley, Mackenzie Hazard, Suzuka Kawaguchi and Devin McNerney. Assisting those goals were Claire Bozdog, Grace Dowley and Ally Feely. On defense there were 5 steals by several players, and 9 shots blocked by goalkeeper Cameron Bozdog. In the final game, the Bears fell by a close score of 6-7 to Gunn High. Throughout the tournament, teamwork was the highlight.

At M-A on Wednesday, October 14, the JV team beat Half Moon Bay 5-3 in a well-played game. Leading the scoring were Grace Dowley, Makenzie Hazard and Claire Bozdog, who had an impressive goal shot from way outside. Goalkeeper Cameron Bozdog prevented at least 4 goals to cement the win. Also playing for the JV team are Selena Yuan, Erica Smith, Taylor Shantz, Charlotte Stid, Dani Williamson and Yareli Moran.

On Wednesday at the home games, it was nice to see many parents and other M-A students cheering on their team from the stands. At the recent game against Castilleja, an M-A English teacher was there to support the girls.

 Girls Varsity Water Polo
On Wednesday the Varsity girls once again faced Half Moon Bay at home. The Bears lost to them 3 weeks ago in the Amanda Macdonald tournament 4-8 and were looking for a PAL win. The game started out slow with both teams looking a bit tentative; HMB scored 1 goal in the first quarter and Bears scored 1 goal in the 2nd tying the game 1-1 at the half. MA then turned it on full speed and never looked back. Four goals were scored in the third and another 2 in the fourth quarter beating HMB 7-3. Maddie Maxwell lead the scoring with 3 goals, Olivia Jackson delivered 2 goals, an assist and a steal, Ayla Huhn 1 goal, 1 assist and 3 steals, Kyra Sheeper 1 goal, 3 steals and Kate Denand had 2 assists. Lauren McGinnis had 4 saves in goal. The Varsity girls face Woodside on their turf Wednesday at 5:15.

The Bears thrilled our Homecoming crowd winning their third game in a row by defeating the Aragon Dons 31-10. Jordan Mims had touchdown runs of 74, 70 and 48 yards and accumulated a total of 321 yards rushing. He also had a 27 yard catch and run touchdown. Of course, all those yards were made possible by excellent blocking by the offensive line, including Makisi Tonga, Epeli Mataele, Ivan Robles, Bryce Rodgers, Marcus Gershenberg and running back Stavro Papadakis. Papadakis also ran for 70 yards on 11 carries. Dylan Calderon added a 28 yard field goal and four extra points to round out the scoring. The defense was led by Justin Friedsam with 10 tackles, Marquise Reid with 9 tackles and Papadakis, Christian Wiseman, and Bryce Rodgers each with 8 tackles. Tate Tussing blanketed Aragon receivers and knocked down several passes. Come pay tribute to our Seniors on Senior Night and cheer on the Bears as they take on Sacred Heart Prep and go for their fourth win on Friday, at 7 pm at Coach Parks Field.
