From the Principal

Dear Families,

We are fully underway this school year, with first quarter coming to a close quickly! Here are some brief updates on the happenings at M-A.

Event updates:

Today, we had our first Feel Good Friday. We had an extended lunch with a farmer's market, yoga and mindfulness, tapestry making, soccer and volleyball, live music, and a piñata. By all accounts, students and staff enjoyed the time to take a deep breath and participate in "feel good" activities. We have another Feel Good Friday planned for the week before the end of each quarter (the next one will be December 11th). If you follow me on twitter (SimoneKennel@MAHSPrincipal) you can see some photos from today's activities as well as other M-A events.

I hope students enjoy their Monday off. They will return to Spirit Week for Homecoming and our second annual College and Career minimum day on October 14th when sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT, freshmen will visit colleges, and seniors will participate in career panels. The week will culminate with our Homecoming football game on Friday, October 16th at 7pm on Coach Parks field when our Bears take on Aragon (JV game at 4pm) and our Homecoming dance on Saturday, October 17th at 7:30pm at the Fox Theater in Redwood City. We hope to see students and families at the game!

Facility Updates:

The good news is our fire alarms have been repaired and we have recovered from our power outage on September 28th!  However, as you may have heard or seen this week, our landmark oak tree (located at the entrance to the senior parking lot) split and half of it fell last Wednesday afternoon at about 4:30pm. Thankfully, there were no injuries or cars damaged. An arborist was called into check the remaining part of the tree and it was clearly rotted so had to be taken down. We will work on plans for a replacement as it was such an aesthetic part of the campus.

Enjoy the three-day weekend. We look forward to a spirit-filled week!

~Simone Rick-Kennel, Principal

Queridas familias,

Afortunadamente, no hubo lesiones o coches dañados.

~Simone Rick-Kennel, Directora

Great Resources from the College and Career Center

In celebration of College and Career Day and the PSAT coming up on Oct. 14, here are a few great resources around exploring majors/careers and preparing for college. For additional links and information, visit the CCC website and log into Naviance.

Exploring Majors and Careers
Undecided about a major or career? Join the club! It is common for students to be unsure of what they would like to do. It is also fairly common for students to change their majors while in college and for adults to change careers several times in their lives. These websites connect majors with careers, but please know that in many, many cases, a person's major does not necessarily determine a career. There are many paths to a career.

Collegeboard.org's Big Future: Wondering what the difference is between majoring in Engineering Mechanics vs. Mechanical Engineering? This website gives profiles of hundreds of majors and careers in a teen-friendly way. This site can help you understand what a particular major is, what your college courses might look like, and which colleges offer that particular major.

What Can I Do With This Major?: The University of Tennessee at Knoxville put together a list of more than 80 majors that you can find at many universities. For each major, you can see a truly wide range of possible career paths related to that major. In addition, this site gives you some very helpful tips that are specific to your major in making you a successful candidate for a job.

Naviance Family Connection: Want to take a survey or questionnaire to help you figure out your strengths, interests and preferences for a possible career? Try the "StrengthsExplorer" or the "Career Interest Profiler" under the "About Me" tab in Naviance. The "Career Interest Profiler" survey can be reset and taken again multiple times, but the "StrengthsExplorer" cannot be reset, and can only be taken once. You can also explore the "Road Trip Nation" short videos to hear interesting and inspiring stories about how people from all walks of life came to the career they have today.

For additional resources on exploring careers, visit the "What Do I Major In?" section of the CCC website.

Preparing for College

College Admissions with Khan Academy: Like many of its instructional resources, the Khan Academy's video tutorials on the college application process are a great introduction to many topics, such as why college is important, how to make high school count, and exploring college options. The Khan Academy also provides free SAT preparation that can be personalized to your needs: current SAT (until Jan. 2016), and the "new" or Redesigned SAT (starting Mar. 2016).

M-A Robotics

Join the Robotics Team

Robotics is "the sport of the mind." The M-A Robotics Team competes in the FIRST Robotics Competition, facing off against teams from around the world. On our team, students are responsible for all aspects of the building process. Technical jobs include machining, wiring, programming, and 3D modeling. Students also learn how to raise funds, get sponsors, and promote the team. No experience is necessary. In fact, the majority of our students join with very little prior knowledge of robotics, and learn under the guidance of veteran students and mentors - professional engineers from companies like Google who volunteer their time to help out. Our alumni have used the skills they've learned on the team to win scholarships, get into college, and land jobs.

This fall, the team is working on a robotic t-shirt cannon. Come get involved! Contact the team at join@team766.com

The Bears led the rest of the game and were up by as much as 3 early in the 3rd quarter, but Menlo hung in and by the end of the 3rd quarter they had clawed back to within one point (8-7). Down by two starters in the second half due to foul trouble, the Bears let up 4 unanswered goals to lose the game 8-11. Alex Hakanson had 5 goals (3 on exclusions) and an assist, Christian Huhn had 2 goals, Jack Beasley had one exclusion goal, and Jorge Pont had 2 assists. Noah Smith had 7 saves in goal. It was a disappointing loss after leading most of the game, but the Bears will get another crack at Menlo in the PAL tournament in early November at home.

These girls are on a roll!  The Bears winning streak continues as their record moves to 12-3 (6-0 PAL).  Tuesday's 4-set victory over Sequoia (20-25, 25-14, 25-8, 25-18) was led by the spring-like action of Jacqueline "Double-Double" DiSanto (16 digs, 15 kills, 4 aces), Kirby "Magic Hands" Knapp (43 assists, 13 digs, 4 aces), and Alexa "The Shovel" Roumeliotis (39 digs, 2 aces).  The ace count went up thanks to Kiana Sales (11 digs, too) and Chloe Johnson (4 digs).  Rachel Gerber and Eliza Grover led on blocks with help from Kelsey Tonsfeldt and Courtney Foliaki.  Every member of the team did some digging, including Tatum Maines, Shauna Sabet and Casey Olsen, who also put in 3 assists.  And DiSanto's kill lead (15, in case you missed it the first time) was followed by Foliaki (8), Grover (8), Lauren Heller (6), Leanna Collins (4), Gerber (3), Sales (2), Tonsfeldt and Maines.

The Ayers crowd was loud for Thursday's highly-anticipated and hard-fought match against Carlmont.  The Bears rose to the occasion with a broom, sweeping the Scots 25-22, 25-20, 30-28 (yes, that last set was a doozie).  Here's the lowdown: 37 assists from Knapp and some hard core kills from DiSanto (13), Collins (12), Grover (7), Foliaki (4), Heller (2), Sales (1).  Aces from Knapp (3) and DiSanto (2); blocks from DiSanto, Grover, Foliaki, Collins and Knapp; and digs from the whole lot of them, led by Roumeliotis (17), Knapp (15), Sales (12) and DiSanto (12), and complemented by 4 each from Johnson, Collins and Heller.  Next week the team travels to Half Moon Bay and Mills.

The JV team came out ready to play this week and won their match in two against Sequoia at home on Tuesday (25-16, 25-17). A few days later, though, the Carlmont Scots came to MA and put some tough pressure on the Bears. It was a battle for every point and there were many sustained rallies but in the end the victory went to the Scots (18-25, 22-25.) Next week the team travels to Half Moon Bay on Tuesday and then to Mills High on Thursday where the Vikings will surely be hoping to avenge their September loss to the Bears!

Bike Donations Wanted

My name is Joe Baran and I'm from Boy Scout Troop 206 in Atherton. Every day I bike to school, making it an integral part of my day-to-day life. Biking is a great way to get around the Peninsula, yet not everyone can afford a bike. My Eagle Project is to collect bikes through donations, and then repair them. The bikes will then be redistributed to local community members who are unable to afford a bike. I am looking for donations of bikes, unused helmets, bike locks, and money for repair parts. If you are able to donate, please contact me at jbarant206@gmail.com or (650)327-6337. Thank you!
