New Bike Racks in Front of E-1
Recently, and thanks to parent support, we have installed a few bike racks in front of E-1, near the Oak Grove entrance. We will also be temporarily placing a couple of bike racks on the Northern edge of the parking lot, along Oak Grove. The bike racks along Oak Grove will only be there for a couple of weeks as we take a look at the flow of bike and pedestrian traffic on campus; our eventual goal is to place a large and permanent bike parking area at this location. There will be no cage at this location and while we are working on having a camera placed there, we do not have one at this time, which means that students must use a sturdy bike lock.

M-A PARENT EDUCATION SERIES
Safety First: A Reality-Based Approach to Teens and Drugs
An Evening with Marsha Rosenbaum, PhD
Thursday, October 8, 2015, 7:00-8:30 pm
M-A Performing Arts Center, PAC Café
Just say no or say nothing at all? This is the question that many parents face with regard to drug use in their teens-whether alcohol, marijuana, or other drugs. Most drug education programs are aimed solely at preventing drug use. After instructions to abstain, the lesson ends. No information is provided about how to avoid problems or prevent abuse for those teens who do experiment. How can you help your kids stay safe? M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. This event is open to parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members. Simultaneous Spanish translation will be available. |

Sports News
The Bears walloped Burlingame 24-4 this week at home. Henry Choi-Freeman was the high scorer in the goal fest with 5 points and an assist. Mostyn Fero and Nik Caryotakis had 4 goals each, Alec Berquist had 3 goals, Jack Beasley, Andy Maxwell and Alex Hakanson had 2 each while James Calhoon and Christian Huhn each had 1. Jackson Goudey and Cameron Raff shared goal tending duties; Raff had 7 saves and Goudey had 5. The bears are now 9-4 overall and 2-0 PAL. Next Wednesday, the Bears travel across town to play league rival Menlo at 4 pm.
Girls Junior Varsity Water Polo
On Wednesday, the Bears hosted Burlingame for their third PAL game of the season. The JV girls fought hard but were not able to overcome the Panthers, losing by a score of 6-9. Grace Dowley led the scoring for the Bears with 3 goals, Ally Feeley had 1 goal, an assist and 3 steals, Suzuka Kawaguchi 1 goal and 1 steal, Charlotte Stid had 1 goal, 1 steal and a block and Yareli Moran and Devin McNerny each had a steal. Cameron Bozdog was tenacious in goal with 7 blocks. Next game is against Castilleja on Wednesday, October 7 at Menlo pool.
Girls Varsity Water Polo
The Varsity girls had a tough game and were not able to score much against a strong Burlingame defense. The Panthers led the game 6-2 at the half and while the Bears held them to 1 goal in the third quarter they were able to score 2 more in the 4th. The final was M-A 2, Burlingame 9. Lauren McGinnis did a tremendous job in goal blocking 8 shots. Maddie Maxwell scored one of the goals and had an assist and 2 steals, Annabelle Paris scored the other goal while Kate Denand, Olivia Jackson and Kyra Sheeper all had 2 steals apiece and Ayla Huhn with 1 steal. Next game is against Castilleja on Wednesday, October 7 at Menlo pool.
Girls Junior Varsity Volleyball Two weeks ago, the JV team traveled to San Francisco to battle a fierce St. Ignatius team in non-league play. The squad gained confidence with each game and earned every point they took against SI, making a statement with kills by Nicole Kang (4), Emily Young (2) and one each from Elise Carlomagno, Alicia Letvin, Erica Fischer and Kathryn Jones. Young was on fire as she assisted on each of the kills and put down two of her own. An aggressive SI took the first game (25-14), but the Bears fired up and jumped out to a small lead in the second thanks to solid defensive play and digs by Kang (9), Fischer (7), libero Roginski (6), and Carlomagno (5). The team was feeling rejuvenated and Jones, Carolyn Murphy, Hannah Roitman and Kaile Prosser hustled to keep the ball in play with their digs and made the Wildcats work. Roginski, Carlomagno and Kang all served up aces but eventually SI gained the lead and won the match (25-17). (BearNotes accidentally skipped this entry last week. Sorry team!)
Last Tuesday, the JV team traveled to San Mateo's Aragon High. Our team's fight was a tough one but they couldn't fend off Aragon's attacks and were defeated. Thursday, however, the team showed what they were made of! The Bears came from behind in both sets to win. In the first set, the Bears were down 6-14 but after Erica Fischer got a kill, Kaile Prosser went to the line and served 6 in a row, which changed everything and the Bears took over for the win. In the second set the Bears again trailed and were down 10-21 but Kaitlyn Tonsfeldt made a tremendous kill and Emily Young reversed the momentum of the game by serving nine points-all winners and only one point from a Burlingame error. The rest of the points were earned from kills, blocks and aces. The stunned Panthers were unable to keep pace and the Bears went on to put a stamp on their victory! (25 - 17, 26 - 24). This week's stats:
- Aces: Young (5), Carolyn Murphy (2), Prosser (2), Nicole Kang (1)
- Kills: Tonsfeldt (7), Fischer (4), Young (3), Camille Rowe (3), Prosser (2), Kang (2)
- Assists: Young (18) & Blocks: Tonsfeldt (1)
- Digs: Fischer (14), Kang (12), Young (6), Lila Roginski (5), Murphy (3), Tonsfeldt (2), Camille Rowe (2), Prosser (2)
This Tuesday the team will battle it out at Sequoia HS but will be home on Thursday to take on Carlmont. Please come out and support your Bears!
M-A's freshman football team had a decisive 40-14 victory over Woodside High School on Saturday morning at Coach Parks Field. The Bears' offense dominated the game, led by DeMarshaun Payton, with the most all purpose yards, playing quarterback and sometimes running back. The offensive line of Connor Gentile, David Tafuna, Michael Hawkins, Manu Tonga, Samson Motuliki, and Kiuola Teu consistently controlled the line of scrimmage. Ric Gold, Damien Greer, and Will Jackson Roundtree each had big plays and gains for the offense. And, Simon Pintz, Samson Motuliki and Matt Bortolazzo each had an interception. Anthony Waller had 7 kickoffs, all of 45 or more yards, one for a touchback. The freshman football team plays their next game against the Palo Alto Vikings on Saturday, October 10 at 11 am at Palo Alto High School.
Junior Varsity & Varsity Football
Both the JV and Varsity teams had a bye this week. Our teams will travel to Sequoia High School on Friday to take on the Sequoia Cherokees (JV plays at 4 pm, Varsity plays at 7 pm).
***Be sure to come out for the 10/8 home game against top PAL rival Carlmont! ***
Last week's two victories boosted the Bears' record to 10-3 (4-0 PAL). Against Aragon, Eliza Grover had her game on, leading with 15 kills, 13 digs, 2.5 blocks and 2 aces. The whole team stepped up with skilled performances by Kirby Knapp (47 assists, 8 digs, 1 ace) Alexa Roumeliotis (37 digs, 1 ace), Jacqueline DiSanto (10 kills, 1 ace, 7 digs), Courtney Foliaki (9 kills, 8 digs), Leanna Collins (8 kills, 2 digs), Shauna Sabet (1 ace, 9 digs), Lauren Heller (3 kills, 5 digs), Rachel Gerber (3 kills, 1 dig, 1 block), and Tatum Maines (3 digs). Final score: 25-20, 17-25, 25-15, 25-21.
At Burlingame, the Bears lost the first set, then got in their groove and swept the rest: 15-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-21. Foliaki was on fire, leading with 13 kills. She was backed up by DiSanto (10), Collins (10), Grover (6), Heller(3), and a zinger by Knapp. Kelsey Tonsfeldt came on the court at a critical moment and put away 2 quick kills to clinch the final set. Knapp placed 40 assists, and Casey Olsen came in with 4. Digs were a full-team effort led by Roumeliotis (33), DiSanto (13), Chloe Johnson (7), Knapp (6), and Sabet (5). Grover, Foliaki and Gerber put up the critical blocks, and the team hosted a little ace party courtesy of Roumeliotis (4), DiSanto(3), Grover (3), Knapp (3), and Heller (1). This week the team plays at Sequoia on Tuesday and at home on Thursday.

Cross Country
On Saturday, October 3rd, the Bears competed in 7 races at the 48th annual Artichoke Invitational at Half Moon Bay High School. The varsity girls placed 2nd, missing first place by a slim 2 point margin. The Bears were led by scorers Annalisa Crowe (3), Madeleine Baier (4), Cat DePuy (14), Olivia Shane (16), and Anna Leake (18). The varsity boys placed 4th led by scorers Robert Lane (8), Andrew Salinas (9), Kevin Conrad (17), Rohan DePuy (36), and Andrew Tan (37). The JV boys and freshman boys both placed 2nd in their races. JV boys were led by scorers Lukas Rash (3), Tommy Bohac (8), Alan Beilin (9), Even Reed (34), and Matt Kenney (35). Freshman boys were led by scorers Luke Scandlyn (2), Nicolas Hafer (7), Cameron Plume (9), Jake Andrew (12), and Luca Johnson (20). The sophomore boys placed 5th in their race led by Karl Zahlaas-Liebner (18), Justin Li (29), Giles Beebe (42), Jake Quinn (47), and Tarek Nasr (48).

The JV girls were only able to field 4 runners, so didn't earn a team score, but were led by Molly Davis (16), Aliza Katzman (19), Elizabeth Muenzen (24), and Helen Boussie (63).
Next up, on October 13th, the Bears will return to Half Moon Bay High School to compete in the 2nd PAL meet of the season. On October 17th, the team will travel to Toro Park in Salinas to compete at the Monterey Bay Invitational.

Bike Donations Wanted
My name is Joe Baran and I'm from Boy Scout Troop 206 in Atherton. Every day I bike to school, making it an integral part of my day to day life. Biking is a great way to get around the Peninsula, yet not everyone can afford a bike. My Eagle Project is to collect bikes through donations, and then repair them. The bikes will then be redistributed to local community members who are unable to afford a bike. I am looking for donations of bikes, unused helmets, bike locks, and money for repair parts. If you are able to donate, please contact me at jbarant206@gmail.com or (650)327-6337. Thank you!
