Safety First: A Reality-Based Approach to Teens and DrugsTeensDrugs

An Evening with Marsha Rosenbaum, PhD
Thursday, October 8, 2015, 7:00-8:30 pm
M-A Performing Arts Center, PAC Café

Just say no or say nothing at all? This is the question that many parents face with regard to drug use in their teens-whether alcohol, marijuana, or other drugs. Most drug education programs are aimed solely at preventing drug use. After instructions to abstain, the lesson ends. No information is provided about how to avoid problems or prevent abuse for those teens who do experiment. How can you help your kids stay safe? M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. This event is open to parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members. Simultaneous Spanish translation will be available.

 JV Girls Volleyball
On Tuesday the JV team traveled to San Francisco to battle a fierce St. Ignatius team in non-league play. The squad is gaining confidence with each game and earned every point they took against SI, making a statement with kills by Nicole Kang (4), Emily Young (2) and one each from Elise Carlomagno, Alicia Letvin, Erica Fischer and Kathryn Jones. Young was on fire as she assisted on each of the kills and put down two of her own.  An aggressive SI took the first game (25-14), but the Bears fired up and jumped out to a small lead in the second thanks to solid defensive play and digs by Kang (9), Fischer (7), libero Roginski (6), and Carlomagno (5). The team was feeling rejuvenated and Jones, Carolyn Murphy, Hannah Roitman and Kaile Prosser hustled to keep the ball in play with their digs and made the Wildcats work. Roginski, Carlomagno and Kang all served up aces but eventually SI gained the lead and won the match (25-17). Come support the team next Tuesday at 5pm as they take on Mills High in their first league match! Go Bears!

 Varsity Girls Volleyball
This just in! The Bears emerged victorious on Saturday night, winning the prestigious 2015 Menlo Invitational Tournament, and leaving behind a (very brief) string of pre-season defeats.  After falling to Saint Ignatius in straight sets (19-25, 20-25, 21-25) earlier in the week, the girls came to Menlo swinging hard and digging deep. They beat Eureka, South San Francisco, and Notre Dame San Jose in straight sets before facing local rival Palo Alto in the semi-finals. After losing the first set, the Bears stepped it up and handed Paly defeat with a final score of 20-25, 25-21, 15-10. The biggest excitement of the event was the championship match against tournament host Menlo. Our M-A girls played point for point in the first set before losing 23-25.  Then, in the second set, things looked grim as the Bears fell behind 10-17, and the Knights fans were getting rowdy. M-A cheerleader John Gerber was not to be outdone - and neither were the Bears. Slowly but surely, the tables turned. The Menlo crowd went hush as M-A surged ahead and took the second set 25-23. Now we are good neighbors, and we all have pals at Menlo, but what happened in the third set can only be described as a crumbling. The Bears were relentless, taking victory at 15-4, and bringing home the coveted (if not gilded) championship plaque.

Here's what was especially great about the Menlo Invitational:  every single player contributed to the team's stunning success. For the dedicated fans, here is a summary of the stats from the 5 hard-fought matches: Kirby Knapp - setting the stage with a whopping 99 assists as well as 7 aces, 26 digs, and a kill; Alexa Roumeliotis - a phenomenal 74 digs, 3 aces, and 6 assists;  Jacqueline DiSanto - all-around expertise with 8 aces, 48 digs, 44 kills, a block, and 6 assists; Eliza Grover - covering the court with 3 aces, 3.5 blocks, 17 digs, 33 kills and an assist; Casey Olsen - 2 aces, 9 digs, and 32 assists; Courtney Foliaki - 2 aces, 4 blocks, 8 digs and 15 kills; Kiana Sales - 2 aces, 32 digs, 7 kills and an assist; Leanna Collins - 23 kills, 2 blocks, 3 digs and 4 assists; Tatum Maines - 3 aces, 8 digs, 6 kills and a block; Rachel Gerber - 7 digs, 6 kills and a block; Lauren Heller - 7 digs, 7 kills, and 1.5 blocks; Shauna Sabet - 1 ace, 7 digs and an assist; Chloe Johnson - 4 aces and 3 digs; Kelsey Tonsfeldt - 4 kills and 3 assists.

Come out for the Bears' home court matches this week, on Tuesday (Mills) and Thursday (Hillsdale) at 6:15pm.  On Friday evening we need you back at Menlo as the Knights try to exact their revenge. If you're afraid of ponytails, beware:  it could get ugly.

  Freshman Football
The M-A Freshman football team hosted their second home game of the season on Saturday with a loss to the Sacred Heart Gators.  Although M-A lost the game, the Bears' defense shut-out Sacred Heart in the second half thanks, in no small part, to an interception by Samson Motuliki and fumble recoveries by Jack Hansen and Michael Hawkins.  The Bears' defense was rounded out with formidable tackles by David Tafuna, Grant Henry, Jake Wang, Hansen, Matt Bortolazzo, Hawkins, Ric Gold, Simon Pintz, and Will Jackson.  The next freshman football game is against Woodside High School on Saturday, October 3 at 10 a.m. at M-A. (The team has no game this week.)

 JV Football
After facing two weeks of stiff competition at away games, the M-A JV Football team opened its league season at home versus Riordan. It was a total team effort as the Bears displayed continued growth on both sides of the ball. Touchdowns were scored by Aliefeti Malupo, who also had an interception, Noah Nglau, who also rushed for 60 yards and had a fumble recovery, Daniel Heimuli, who also had a fumble recovery, and Joey Olshausen, who also had a kickoff return of 20 yards. Dimitri Sakalia and D'Arius Gipson both caught a pass and both had a fumble recovery. Jhavante Hill played both sides of the ball with his usual focus, blocking a punt, a pass, recording 5 tackles and recording a takeaway on a fumble in addition to running the ball. Spencer Corona recorded four successful PATs, two catches, an interception in the end zone, and when not kicking off deep, executed a successful on-side kick. Ryan Buck not only led the offensive line at center, but made key tackles and an important sack. Multiple tackles and assists were provided courtesy of Sione Fehoko, Andrew Ojeda, Tony Siri and a whole passel of Bears. Final score was M-A 28, Riordan 0. The JV Bears play Monterey next at 4:30pm on Friday at Coach Parks Field.

Varsity Football
The Bears battled Archbishop Riordan in a non-conference game Friday night at Coach Parks Field. The Friday Night Lights atmosphere was exhilarating with over 1,000 fans in attendance who were wowed by our new cheer and dance squads, our pep band and drumline and tremendous energy by M-A's own 12th Man Club. The Bears kept the game close but ultimately Riordan prevailed 26 to 9. The Bears' passing game dominated the offense and quarterback duties were shared between Spiro Papadakis (9 of 19 for 101 yards) and Skyler Taulapapa-Lautalo (4 of 5 for 58 yards). At the receiving end, Tate Tussing caught 3 passes for 67 yards, Ben Stanley caught 3 passes for 42 yards, and Justin Friedsam caught 2 passes for 33 yards.  M-A scored on a field goal by Dylan Calderon and a touchdown pass from Papadakis to Stanley.  The defense was lead by Justin Friedsam who had 8 tackles. Bryce Rodgers and Christian Wiseman contributed 7 tackles each, and Kevin Jaggers contributed 6 tackles. The Bears will play Monterey this Friday at Coach Parks Field at 7:00.  Come out and Cheer on Your M-A Bears!

 Varsity Boys Water Polo
The boys varsity water polo team participated in the Roche Invitational Tournament hosted by Menlo this weekend and placed 7 out of 16 teams. On Friday afternoon, the Bears easily defeated San Luis Obispo 11-2 with 5 goals from Christian Huhn (2 of them penalty shots), 2 goals each from Mostyn Fero and Jack Beasley, and one each from Nik Caryotakis and Alex Hakanson. Cameron Raff had 11 saves in goal. The second game on Friday was against San Ramon Valley, an east bay powerhouse. The Bears were ahead 2-1 after the first quarter, but despite a good fight ultimately lost 6-11. Fero had 2 goals while Beasley, Huhn, Hakanson, and Jorge Pont had 1 each. Noah Smith had 7 saves in goal.

On Saturday morning, the Bears faced Vista from north San Diego county in an intense physical battle. The game was tied in the final minute when Vista got the last point, beating the Bears 10-9. Huhn had 4 goals and 2 steals, Pont had 2 goals, an assist, and 3 steals, Caryotakis had a goal and 3 steals, while Hakanson and Spencer Gran each had a goal. Smith had 10 saves in goal. The final game of the tournament was against La Jolla. The game was well played with M-A winning 13-9. Huhn and Fero had 5 goals each; Caryotakis had 2 goals and an assist, Gran had a goal and Pont had 7 assists. Smith was a wall in goal with 12 saves (one was a 5m penalty shot).

The Bears kick off league play this week with a 5 p.m. game against Mills on Wednesday at home.

 M-A Cross Country
The PAL season opener took place on Tuesday, September 15th on the 2.4 mile course at Westmoor High School with 15 schools in attendance. The Bears dominated the meet winning 3 events and placing second in 2 events. The varsity girls placed 1st by a significant margin with leading scorers Madeleine Baier (3), Cat DePuy (4), Annalisa Crowe (6), Olivia Shane (12), and Katie Beebe (14). The varsity boys placed 2nd led by scorers Robert Lane (5), Kevin Conrad (10), Rohan DePuy (14), Andrew Tan (20), and Scott McDonald (23). The JV girls won in a tie breaker led by top 5 scorers Olivia Tai (5), Chloe Mauvais (8), Anna Leake (9), Sophia Goland (10), and Sara Osterberg (15). Senior Elizabeth Muenzen finished ahead of Aragon's 6th runner to seal the win for the JV girls. The frosh/soph boys also dominated their race led by scorers Andrew Salinas (1), Kyle Conrad (3), Luke Scandlyn (7), Karl Zahlaas-Liebner (11), and Nicolas Hafer (12). Salinas was also the top individual runner in the frosh/soph race.  Despite placing 4 runners in the top 10 finishers, the JV boys were narrowly edged out of first place by 2 points to Half Moon Bay. The JV boys lead scorers were Evan Reed (5), Alan Beilin (6), Lukas Rash (7), Tommy Bohac (9), and Daniel Malkary (11).

Next up, on September 26th, the Bears will split the squad with varsity runners competing at the nationally recognized Stanford Invitational and the rest of the team competing at the Ram Invitational at Westmoor High School in Daly City.
