We continue to have a great start to the school year with a successful Back To School Night on 9/3/15. I really enjoyed seeing many parents all over the campus (navigating our construction pathways) and hearing about courses from our teachers.
Update on Enrollment
Our enrollment is at 2,258 students. While most classes are reasonable sizes, we still have some classes with enrollments larger than we would like in a few math and social studies courses. While our plan was to hire additional teachers, we are not getting qualified applicants at this time and want to minimize disruption to student schedules. Instead, we will hire additional instructional associates ("teaching assistants") and readers to assist in some of our larger classes.
Use of School Loop
The Sequoia Union High School District has implemented base line requirements for teachers' use of School Loop, our adopted learning management system. I also have some tips for healthy use of School Loop (as a Principal and parent!).
SUHSD requirements:
- Teachers publish, and post in IC, updated, current grades at each progress report period (mid-quarter and quarter) for students, parents, colleagues, and other supports to view. Beyond these minimum requirements, the District strongly encourages teachers to publish updated grades every two weeks.
- Teachers publish and post the following in School Loop:
- Descriptions of major (long-term) assignments, papers, and projects (upload assignment sheets, project description handouts in the digital locker)
- Advanced notice (minimum one school day) of all homework assignment/project due dates (It is understood that teachers may require students to keep track of homework assignments through alternative methods as part of a class expectation, in addition to posting assignment due dates on the School Loop calendar.) Teachers may have external links to their own websites from School Loop.
As a parent and principal, here are my recommendations for healthy use of School Loop:
- Register for a parent account. Students have their own accounts. Go to www.mabears.org and click on School Loop and "Register" (you will need your student's ID #) and follow instructions. One of our vice principals will approve your account asap.
- If you elect to receive the daily School Loop emails, filter them to a folder in your inbox and check them when you can. The daily emails can be annoying and can create stressful situations!
- There's also an app for that! Download the free School Loop app for mobile devices and check when you can. (Get iOS here, iPad here, and Android here.)
- Understand that what you see on a given day may not reflect what has been turned in or graded in real-time and will change as teachers grade work and input scores.
- While every parent / teenager dynamic is different, I recommend having a discussion with your child as to how he/she wants you to monitor School Loop. Let your child take ownership of his / her progress and initiate communication with teachers if there is a concern or question.
- We provide a hard copy planner (thanks to the PTA) to every student to record assignments and use a school resource. This may be the "old school" way, but it also keeps students responsible to keep track of their assignments and to-do lists.
If you need assistance with a School Loop account, contact us at 322-5311 ext. 50131 or 50133.

M-A Math Contests
The math department is quite proud of our students' contest accomplishments and we are looking forward to another great year. School-wide math contests are held on seven different Tuesdays throughout the year during lunch. These contests are part of the California Math League, a statewide contest where hundreds of high schools throughout the state participate, both at a state and county level.
There is a multitude of benefits for participating students. They receive extra credit in their respective math classes, are challenged, and enjoy competition with their peers. Each year we have approximately twenty winners in different categories that receive trophies and get to add this award to their college application resume. In addition, math contests give students an opportunity to engage in independent thinking that cuts across the math curriculum. We believe that students who participate in many math contests over their high school careers become more skilled at taking standardized tests, in particular the SAT's, the math subject tests and their AP math exams.
This year's contest schedule is September 22, October 20, November 17, December 8, January 12, February 9 and March 16 at lunch. Top performers who are returning this year include Andrew Yates, Jasper Fu, Kasey Love, Erik Roise and Nikita Manin.

Safety First: A Reality-Based Approach to Teens and Drugs-
An Evening with Marsha Rosenbaum, PhD
Thursday, October 8, 2015, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
M-A Performing Arts Center, PAC Café
Just say no or say nothing at all? This is the question that many parents face with regard to drug use in their teens-whether alcohol, marijuana, or other drugs. Most drug education programs are aimed solely at preventing drug use. After instructions to abstain, the lesson ends. No information is provided about how to avoid problems or prevent abuse for those teens who do experiment. How can you help your kids stay safe? M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. This event is open to parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members. Simultaneous Spanish translation will be available. |

Sports News
JV Girls Volleyball
The JV team used last Tuesday's match against Valley Christian to work out their pre-season jitters. In their loss to a very strong opponent (18-25, 19-25), the Bears blocked, dug and made impressive kills to show they'll be fine tuned when league play starts. Nicole Kang led the offense with 5 kills, followed by Kaitlyn Tonsfeldt, Camille Rowe, Emily Young, and Kathryn Jones who powered out two kills each. Alicia Letvin, Carolyn Murphy, Erica Fischer and Kailer Prosser each had kills and on defense Tonsfeldt and Fischer closed out points with their blocks. The back court hustled to keep the ball alive with digs coming from many players: Kang (7), Lila Roginski (7), Gabby Rubio (5), Fischer (3), and one each from Tonsfeldt, Elise Carlomagno, Sarah Lehman and Rowe. On Tuesday, the team travels north to play a formidable St. Ignatius team in their last non-league match.
First off, a hearty welcome to our new head coach, Fletcher Anderson, and assistant coach Lauryn Anderson. We are excited to have you as part of the M-A family!
One thing we can say is that the 2014 CCS Division 1 Champions did not take the easy way into the 2015 season! This week the Bears jumped into pre-season with matches against Bay Area powerhouses Valley Christian and Presentation San Jose. The team came out strong, winning its first set against Valley Christian before falling 25-22, 13-25, 18-25, 16-25. Juniors Jacqueline DiSanto (14 kills) and setter Kirby Knapp led the offense, with additional kills by senior Leanna Collins (8), junior Eliza Grover (6) and sophomore Lauren Heller (5). Junior Alexa Roumeliotis anchored the defense with 22 digs, aided by DiSanto (13), Collins (10) and Knapp (8), as well as juniors Kiana Sales (6) and Chloe Johnson (5). Grover and senior Courtney Foliaki both posted blocks against the formidable VC hitters.
Thursday's home game against Presentation was a rousing battle despite the heat. After losing the first two sets (22-25, 16-25) the Bears rallied, with inspiration from the energetic home crowd. The team came alive in the third set, and fought point for point to win 27-25. Moving into set 4, the Bears maintained high energy and kept fans on their feet up until the very end. DiSanto led the charge, pulling off 3 aces, 14 kills and 13 digs. Roumeliotis put up 19 digs, complemented by Johnson (11), Knapp (9), Sales (3), Grover (3), Collins (3), Heller (1) and senior Rachel Gerber (1). The blocking was shared among Grover, Foliaki, Gerber, Heller and Collins. The kill team included Collins (14), Heller (7), Grover (6), Foliaki (2), Gerber (2) and Sales (1) - all facilitated by Knapp's mad-skill assists.
While they ultimately lost the final set 25-21, the Bears have clearly found their rhythm. They will be going strong into next Tuesday's away match against Saint Ignatius, and the Menlo Invitational Tournament on Saturday. Get psyched for a great season! Your support in the stands makes all the difference, so mark your calendar for the next home game on September 22. Full calendar and fan wear at http://m-avolleyball.com/
M-A traveled to Oakdale High School, a perennial powerhouse in the Central Valley, for a challenging Saturday evening game. The Bears started the game strong with a solid running game. Jordan Mims capped an 85 yard drive with a 45 yard touchdown run to put the Bears on the board. The Oakdale defense came on strong and they proved to be a formidable opponent. Mims ended the game with 107 yards rushing. Stavro Papadakis and Skyler Taulapa-Lautalo shared quarterback duties with Papadakis completing a 23 yard pass to Jack Gray and a 17 yard pass to Ben Stanley. Justin Friedsam lead the defense with 9 tackles. Bryce Rodgers added 6 tackles while Ben Stanley and Jack Gray each contributed 4 tackles. The final score was 61-7, Oakdale.
Come cheer on the Bears at their first home game this Friday night against Archbishop Riordan. JV plays at 4:30pm and Varsity plays at 7pm under the lights at Coach Parks Field. Catch our new Freshman team on Saturday against Sacred Heart Prep at10am at Coach Parks Field.
The Bears dominated play from start to finish on Tuesday and thumped Los Altos, 9-3. Finn Depuy and Henry Marx paced the balanced attack with 2 goals apiece, with Ben Ferrick (1 goal), Chris Lobdell (1 goal, 2 assists), Demetri Sweezy (1 goal), Davos Paquin (1 goal, 1 assist), Alec Berquist (1 goal, 2 assists), Cooper Gran (1 assist) and Nick Andrew (1 assist) all contributing. The entire team played airtight defense, allowing only 4 shots on goal. Lobdell (3 steals) and Gran (2 steals) were particularly disruptive.
The Bears were routed 19-4 by a very talented Sacred Heart Prep squad on Thursday. M-A defense's was overwhelmed by the potent and deep SHP attack, which fired on all cylinders for all four quarters. Chris Lobdell had a hand in all of the Bears' goals (2 goals, 2 assists), with Shon Alimukhamedov adding a goal and an assist, and freshman Finn Depuy scoring the final goal.
It was a busy week for the boys varsity water polo team. On Tuesday, the Bears hosted Los Altos and won 18-4. Hole set Mostyn Fero led the scoring with 6 goals. He was assisted by Jorge Pont with 3 goals and 2 assists, Jack Beasley with 2 goals and an assist, Spencer Gran with 2 goals and one goal each for Nik Caryotakis, James Calhoon, Christian Huhn, Alex Hakanson, and Hugo McMillan. The three goalies (Jackson Goudey, Cameron Raff, and Noah Smith) had a total of 4 saves.
On Thursday the Bears hosted water polo powerhouse Sacred Heart Prep. The Bears got off to a quick start and led 4-2 after the first quarter. SHP adjusted and the Bears were down by 1 at the half. Play deteriorated in the second half, with SHP awarded a total of 12 power plays compared to M-A's 4. The final score was a loss 7-13. Hopefully the Bears will get another crack at SHP in the North-South tournament in late October.
Over the weekend, the Bears participated in the Schmitt tournament hosted by Bellarmine. The Bears bounced back from their disappointing game on Thursday and placed 3rd out of 16 teams. The first game against Jesuit went to overtime and the Bears won 10-9. Fero had 5 goals, Caryotakis had 2 goals and Huhn, Hakanson and Pont each had 1 goal. Raff and Smith shared goalie duties and each had 3 saves. The Bears won Game 2 against Buchanan 11-7. The Bears were ahead 6-1 at the half, and then a series of exclusions gave Buchanan a number of powerplay opportunities, and the Bears were outscored by 1 in the second half. Huhn led the offense with 4 goals, supported by Hakanson and Fero with 2 each. Pont, Caryotakis and Beasley each had 1 goal. Smith in goal had an impressive 9 saves, 1 assist, and 1 steal.
Game 3 on Saturday morning was against Lodi. Despite being outsized, missing 2 key players to the ACT test, and losing shooter Huhn to fouls in Q1 the score was tied at the start of the fourth quarter. Bench depth became the issue when 2 more players fouled out and the Bears were outscored 5-0 in the fourth quarter to lose 6-11. Beasley, Caryotakis, Huhn, Fero, Gran, and Pont each had one goal. Goudey was tough in the goal with a total of 7 saves and a steal. The final game for 3rd place was against St. Mary's. Hole set defender Beasley fouled out early and the Bears were down 2-3 at the end of Q1. They battled back and at the end of the half were ahead 5-4, ultimately winning 12-8. Caryotakis and Fero each had 4 goals, Pont had 2, and Calhoon and Huhn each had 1 goal. Despite a kickout resulting in a goal, goalie Smith was impressive with 10 saves. A solid early season showing for the Bears. This coming weekend the Bears will play in the Roche invitational hosted by Menlo.
