Meet & Greet with the Principal:
Please join me for a Meet & Greet with the Principal on Monday, August 31 in our PAC Café at 6:00 pm. J.C. Farr, our new Administrative Vice Principal, and Mai Lin Nyugen, our new College Advisor, will join me. Please join us for casual conversation and some light refreshments!

Back to School Night:
Also, be sure to attend Back to School Night this Thursday, September 3rd, starting with a welcome message in the PAC theater for new families at 6:15 pm followed by class visits (starting at 6:45 pm) to meet your student's teachers and learn about plans for the school year.

Please wear a helmet when riding your bike to M-A!
It's been wonderful to see so many students biking to school. Biking is great exercise, and it really helps reduce traffic congestion. While it's terrific to see so many students on their bicycles, it's a concern that many students are not wearing bike helmets.  Please remember to wear your bike helmet when biking to M-A!

Thank you for all of the amazing support from parents, students and staff. I look forward to a fabulous 2015-16 school year.

~Simone Rick-Kennel, Directora, M-A

Volunteers Needed for Challenge Day 2015 -- Be the Change!

Join us Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, October 26, 27, and 28 for this important one-day workshop that promotes compassion, communication and community building among the Class of 2019.  It's a great way for parents of all students to get involved at M-A. This one-day commitment helps our teens break down barriers and create new levels of empathy and respect. Come participate in one of the most meaningful volunteer opportunities of the year.

We especially need small group facilitators, from 8:15 am to 3:30 pm.  We will need almost 200 adult volunteers, who are critical to the success of this program. Please consider signing up!

To volunteer, pick the day you prefer and e-mail the Julie Quinlan at  challengeday@mabearspta.org.  Please put "Challenge Day Volunteer" in the subject line. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our students!
Thank You from the Library

A big thank you from the library to all the PTA volunteers who helped us distribute textbooks: Mary Ryan, Lauren Calhoon, Pacita Ikonomou, Audrey Kemp, Valorie Friedsam, Mary Murphy, Roscoe Jennings, Lourdes Lopez, Kathryn Bowden, Venetia Riso, Gail Gran, Narmina Sharifova, Jacquie Kershner, Lora Christen, Diane Schiano, Pam Fernandes, Kristin McDonnell, and Peri Caylor.

This event will be held on the Green.

We will look to the students and local community to reign as the biggest Canned Food Drive put on by a high school in North America. All Leadership students and anyone who would like to serve food to our local community can do so by volunteering at our Distribution Day at Ecumenical Hunger in East Palo Alto on December 5.

M-A Parent Education Series
M-A PARENT EDUCATION SERIES and KEPLER'S BOOKS PRESENT
Brainstorm: The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain

An evening with Dr. Daniel J. Siegel
Wednesday, September 16
Event starts at 7:30 pm - Doors open at 6:30 pm
M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC)

The Peninsula Arts & Letters and Kepler's Books are pleased to bring internationally acclaimed author and UCLA psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Siegel to the M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC).
This special evening is presented in partnership with the M-A Parent Education Series and Menlo-Atherton High School.

Dr. Siegel will share the exciting neuroscience behind the heightened social, emotional and creative energy that drives teen behavior. Between the ages of 12 to 24, the brain changes in important and, at times, challenging ways. In "Brainstorm," Dr. Siegel dispels a number of commonly held myths about adolescent behavior and demonstrates that during these years children learn vital skills, such as how to leave home and enter the larger world, connect deeply with others, and safely experiment and take risks.

Drawing on important new research in the field of interpersonal neurobiology, Siegel explores exciting ways in which understanding how the brain functions can improve the lives of adolescents, making their relationships more fulfilling and less lonely and distressing on both sides of the generational divide.

Event is open to parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members.

Kepler's Books will offer sales of Brainstorm: The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain.

Travel to the Galápagos Islands & Ecuador in Summer 2016!

We  currently have 6-8 spots left for M-A students to embark on a nine-day tour of the Galápagos Islands, which are most famous for the profound discoveries of Charles Darwin. In June, we will carry on that scientific tradition as we learn about the unique species that call the islands home. On mainland Ecuador, we will experience the local culture in Quito. Independence Plaza and the Intinan Museum will provide social context to the biological wonders of this fascinating country.

Please contact Andy Stuart at astuart@seq.org for more details.

Stanford Adolescent Sleep Study

Stanford University is currently conducting a study to help teens (14-18) go to bed earlier and wake up earlier. The treatment involves use of a light device that is placed by the teen's bedside and flashes periodically throughout the night. Teens also meet for four sessions with a licensed psychologist at Stanford to learn about sleep and strategies to improve sleep. The paid study requires completing a sleep diary daily for five weeks. To participate, please contact the Zeitzer Laboratory at teensleep@stanford.edu or 650-725-7767.
