Guidance Counselor Reconfiguration
Guidance Counselor Alpha Breakdown:
We have hired two new guidance counselors and have reconfigured the guidance counselor alphabet breakdown. The rationale for hiring two guidance counselors now was to avoid re-configuring the alphabet again in a few years. Our two new guidance counselors, Megan Corazza and Nikki "Tram" Dang, join the M-A guidance team with excellent references and high school counseling experience.
The new alphabet breakdown is listed below with an exception for class of 2016 seniors.
For the class of 2016: If the new alphabet breakdown resulted in counselor reassignment, students will have the option of consulting with and / or requesting a college letter of recommendation from their previous counselor. This exception will only apply to the class of 2016.

Arena Check-In
Arena Check-In is scheduled for - Freshman and seniors: Tuesday, August 11 from 1 to 5 pm
- Sophomores and juniors: Wednesday, August 12 from 8 am to 12 noon.
Please look for a mailing from M-A soon. Arena Check-In provides an opportunity for students to take photos and pick up their ID card, sign up for a locker, buy a parking permit, pay outstanding fines, return books, purchase clothes for PE, and buy BearWear from the boosters. Sophomores and juniors can also register for the PSAT, and families can submit athletic clearance paperwork or immunization records as well. Parents can sign up for volunteer opportunities, join the PTA, as well as buy some BearWear for themselves. Consider it one-stop shopping and a good place to get excited and ready for the new school year. Keep in mind student schedules cannot be picked up until the first day of school, starting at 7 am in the New Gym. Parents, we are looking for volunteers to help with both Arena Check-In as well as with the schedule pick up on the first day of school. Please consider signing up at the following link, Volunteer Sign Up.

Volunteer for Arena Check-In
VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED FOR ARENA CHECK-IN - There are less than 48 hours left to staff all of the tables at Arena Check-In, and many more volunteers are needed. Please help keep the lines moving by volunteering a little of your time while catching up with old friends and making new ones. M-A staff members will be on hand to give you a one-minute training. It's that simple! M-A staff can't do it without you! Please sign up on our spreadsheet here. As of this writing, the late Tuesday afternoon shift (freshmen and seniors) is particularly short-staffed. Thank you so much for pitching in! Contact Mary Murphy at adminsupport@mabearspta.org with questions.

Let Your Imagination Fly
The theme for this year's Reflections Arts Competition has been announced: "LET YOUR IMAGINATION FLY." Reflections is a national PTA program that has been in existence for 40 years. The competition covers six art disciplines, Photography, Visual Arts, Music Composition, Film Production, Dance Choreography and Literature. All entrants must create a work of art based on the theme "Let Your Imagination Fly." The artwork is judged by working artists in our community and the winning entries then move on to compete at the district, state and even national levels. All entry forms and rules are available on the M-A's PTA website or from any of the Arts Department faculty. Due date for entries is November 4th. So go and create a work of art showing how you "Let Your Imagination Fly."

Stanford Adolescent Sleep Study
Stanford University is currently conducting a study to help teens (14-18) go to bed earlier and wake up earlier. The treatment involves use of a light device that is placed by the teen's bedside and flashes periodically throughout the night. Teens also meet for four sessions with a licensed psychologist at Stanford to learn about sleep and strategies to improve sleep. The paid study requires completing a sleep diary daily for five weeks. To participate, please contact the Zeitzer Laboratory at teensleep@stanford.edu or (650) 725-7767.

News about BearNotes & TriVocis
We are making some changes this year to BearNotes and TriVocis. - BearNotes is now mobile-friendly! BearNotes will now be a mobile-friendly weekly newsletter. Short articles will be published in full in the email newsletter. Longer articles will begin in the email newsletter, but then will continue on the M-A PTA website through a "Read more" link to the full article.
- BearNotes and TriVocis will be combined. There will now be a single source for all important M-A news. The articles typically published in TriVocis, like the Principal's Message and more in-depth articles about what's happening at M-A, will now be included in BearNotes. We also plan to include more student contributions to honor the spirit of TriVocis, which was originally conceived as the voice for the PTA, school staff, and students.
We hope you like this new, more streamlined M-A school newsletter!

How to Submit Articles
Please keep articles short and focused. Longer TriVocis-style articles are welcome, but keep the most important info in the first paragraph. (Longer articles might show only the first paragraph in the BearNotes email and then continue on the M-A PTA website.)
- Email proofread submissions to bearnotes@mabearspta.org by Thursday midnight.
- Please do not send attachments. Send article content in the body of the email.
- Include the event, date, time, location, and contact info, including URL.
- If the submission includes critical info for parents, please consider including a Spanish translation of your article. Please email BearNotes if you need help with this.
- All submissions are subject to editing by the PTA.
For the PTA policies on BearNotes publication, please visit the M-A PTA website. M-A PTA does not endorse third-party events or submissions, nor take responsibility regarding the content of any third-party websites.
