A very warm and cuddly bear hug to all the amazing runners, walkers, volunteers, and sponsors who helped make the 10th Annual Big Bear Run on Sunday, May 3, a huge success! This year there were 938 registered runners who came out to support M-A Athletics, including our first international runner visiting from Mexico. The M-A Boosters granted over $140,000 to M-A athletic teams this year, funding critically needed equipment and uniforms, including $85,000 in coaching stipends. Support for the Big Bear Run and M-A Athletic Boosters is a separate and necessary addition to the donations you may have already made to your athlete's individual sports team. Individual team needs far exceed the amount any team can raise alone. Many of the items funded by Boosters benefit several teams such as the weight room, canopies, electronic timing devices, and M-A athletic trainers.

Congratulations to the fastest male bear, Kevin Conrad (17:41) and fastest female bear, Madeleine Baier (20:07). Check out the race results and great Big Bear Run photos on M-A Athletic Boosters. Congratulations to the lucky M-A student winners for the end-of-race drawings! Thank you for the contributions of new and gently used shoes that will be donated to Guatemala. The race could not have happened without the help of many wonderful volunteers. The Big Bear Committee oversaw all the details such as food, logistics, T-shirts, sponsors, publicity and race planning. Thank you to committee members Dana Hayse, Megan Johnson, Kathleen Balestra, Libby Beasley, Libby Tinsley, Corby Locke, Maryellen McCabe, Kristin Spindt, Vicki Knapp, and Jill Roumeliotis. Thank you to the parents, students, and friends who came out race day to help with set-up, registration, food and water, marking the course, and cheering on the runners. Thank you to Madeleine Baier for her inspiring singing of the Star Spangled Banner, Alexa Roumeliotis and Ryan Cole as the M-A Bear, Eric Wilmurt as our Race Rabbit, Chris McCabe as the race commentator, and Mark Balestra for the fun race photos. Thank you to the Atherton and Menlo Park Police Departments and the Menlo Park Fire Department for keeping us all safe on the race course. A big thanks to Brien Oliver, Keith Perkins, and Juan Flores and their M-A custodial crew for all the heavy lifting in race preparations, set-up, and take down. Thank you to Frances Gray for notifying and distributing letters to all M-A Lindenwood neighbors. Thank you to the M-A's own cheer team, lacrosse team, football team, volleyball team, and swim team for helping out at the race, generating lots of school spirit! Thank you to the AP Environmental students for providing and manning the compost bins. Thank you to Tom Hayse and Jeff Child for marking the course and cleaning the fire road. Thank you to Annette Smith for the loan of mile marker signs. Thank you for all the M-A neighbors for accommodating our race so graciously! Thank you to Freewheel Brewing Company for the space and equipment we used to prepare our food, Hobee's California Restaurants for the delicious coffee cake, Bianchini's Grocery for the fresh fruit,, Fleet Feet Sports for the race bibs and gift certificates, Occasions, etc...for the trophies and medals, Angel Heart Cakes and Jeffery's Hamburgers for gift cards, and Peet's Coffee & Tea for the morning coffee.

All 6 of these talented Bears are going to the California State Championships this coming weekend. In other CCS news, the M-A Aqua Bears had a great showing at the CCS preliminary meet on Friday, with individual swims by the Bears: Jak Tedesco (100 back), Matheus Santos (50 free), Scott Kuhnen (100 breast), Zach Goland (200 free and 500 free), and Gordon Williams (100 fly and 50 free). The Lady Bears swimming in CCS are: Denend (50 free and 100 free), Emma Kaufman (100 breast), Mary Lane (200 IM and 500 free), Murff (50 free and 100 free), Claire Haldeman (100 fly and 500 free), Worden (100 fly and 100 back), Dunn (100 breast and 200 IM), and Sophia Bergmann (500 free). Relays participants were: Girls' 200 Medley (Worden, Kaufman, Haldeman, Murff), Boy's 200 Medley (Tedesco, Kuhnen, G. Williams, Santos), Girls' 200 Free (Dunn, Worden, Murff, Denend), Boys' 200 Free (Santos, Kuhnen, Alex Hakanson, Goland), Girls' 400 Free (Denend, Lane, Haldeman, Dunn), and Boys' 400 Free (G. Murff went from 57th place out of 59 swimmers in the 50 Free event to make the final cut. She placed 9th place overall in the finals. Z. Goland impressed in the 200 and 500 Free preliminary heats, eventually earning 9th place in the 200 Free and 12th place in the 500 free in the final Championships. M-A also had two girls' relays and a boys' relay in the final heats. The Girls' 400 free relay placed 10th in the finals and 7th in the 200 Free relay finals, and the Boys'  400 relay placed 14th.

In diving, M. Paulsen placed second in CCS overall out of 54 divers. T. Paulsen followed in 3rd place. Congratulations to our divers for this awesome accomplishment!

Summing up this year's Swimming and Diving Season: undefeated Girls' in PAL dual meets (6-0); PAL Championships for all 4 squads (JV Boys and Girls, and Varsity Boys and Girls). In combined CCS competition, M-A Girls' placed 11th of all CCS teams, and the boys tied with Menlo for 29th place. Great results for this year's aqua bears!

Bear print Varsity Baseball - In the first round of the PAL Tournament against Mills, M-A won 14-6. Senior Brian Coggins took the hill and got the win. Coggins was solid for 3 innings giving up only 2 earned runs, and striking out 4. The ball was then handed to freshman Miles Conrad who gave Bears' fans a promising glimpse of the future. Conrad was fantastic going 2 innings, and giving up no earned runs. Conrad used a fastball and a devastating curve ball to strike out 3 hitters. Juniors Hunter Sevy and Nikolai Tarran pitched the last 2 innings, and closed the game out.

The Bears bats were strong again, led by senior Matt McGarry who homered (11th of season), doubled, walked, scored 3 times, and drove in 5 runs. Other big hits and runs scored were by junior Ryan Klapper who also drove in 2 runs, senior Daniel K-G who had 2 RBIs, senior Evan Easton (1B) and 2 runs scored, sophomore Nick Prainito (2B) and 2 runs scored, junior Nick Olson (1B) and run scored, junior Matthew Johnston (1B) and 2 runs scored, senior AJ Lemons (2B), run scored and an RBI, Coggins (2B) and a run scored, senior Max Gardiner (1B) and a run scored, and junior Bret Rodrigues (BB) and a run scored. The Varsity welcomed up Josh Bogomilsky, Connor NathanConrad, Chris Liang and Sevy for the post-season drive.

In the second round of the PAL Tournment versus Sacred Heart, M-A lost 4-5. McGarry got the starting pitching assignment. McGarry settled in and did not allow a hit or an earned run after the second inning, and struck out 9 Gator hitters. After 6 innings the ball was handed to senior Lemons, who was in complete command and pitched brilliantly, spotting pitches wherever and whenever he wanted. Johnston had 2 hits for the Bears, and McGarry, Easton, and Rodrigues all had doubles. RBI's were by McGarry who had 2, Johnston and Tarran. Runs were scored by Easton, Johnston, Rodrigues, and Tarran. The loss knocked the Bears out of the PAL tourney, but the team secured a CCS birth, and awaits their seeding and schedule. The first CCS game is at home this Wednesday, May 20 against Gunn at 4 p.m. There is a $5 entrance fee and all proceeds go to the CCS.

Bear print SoftballThe Bears finished the season on a high note, winning both games last week.  On a blustery Tuesday, the Bears traveled to South San Francisco to face South City in their last league game of the season. The Bears won the offensive battle 20-10 in 6 innings; every player got at least 1 hit, and the seniors led the offensive effort. Three seniors combined for 5 home runs: Emily Katz and Yesenia Garcia each had 2 and Erin Goode had 1. Erin White, also a senior, went 3 for 4 in her last game. The underclassmen contributed to the effort as well:  Delilah Kline went 4 for 5, reaching base safely and scoring all 5 times she batted, Sarah Tiemann doubled twice, Jess Burgos and Sarah Scandalios each had 2 singles, and Molly Katz and Taylor Conrad each singled. Pitcher E. Katz struck out 7, and the Bears again played an error-free game.  The Bears won the game 7-0, to finish the season a game under .500.  Co-captains E. Katz and Goode want to thank the coaches, Rick and Jaclyn Vujovich, the parents, and all the students who came out to cheer them on.  Go Bears!

On Friday, the Bears celebrated senior day. Seniors E. Katz, Goode, Garcia, White, Alice Coleman, Maddie Zamora, and Georgette Libunao were honored before the last home game of the season against Mt. Eden. The game lacked the offensive fireworks of the prior game, but E. Katz pitched a masterful shut out in her last game as a Bear. She struck out 11 batters, including striking out the side in both the second and seventh innings. She only walked 1 and gave up 5 hits, and Mt. Eden had only 1 runner advance past second base all game. The Bears committed only 1 error, and the seniors contributed heavily to the defensive effort. First baseman Goode had an unassisted double play, Zamora made a nice catch in right field, and E. Katz had 2 assists in addition to her 11 strikeouts. Kline had a great game at shortstop as well, with 2 assists and a put out. At the plate, the Bears were hot again, with Goode leading the team, going 4 for 4 with 4 RBIs. E. Katz had a triple and a double, Zamora had 2 singles, M. Katz had an RBI double, Kline had an RBI single, and Coleman, Tiemann and Burgos all singled. The Bears won the game 7-0, to finish the season a game under .500. Co-captains E. Katz and Goode want to thank the coaches, Rick and Jaclyn Vujovich, the parents, and all the students who came out to cheer them on. Go Bears!

Bear print Girls Varsity Lacrosse -With their second place finish in league, the Bears received a first round bye in the WBAL Playoffs and hosted Sacred Heart on Thursday. After splitting games in the regular season, it was all SHP in the playoffs as the Gators went up 11-2 in the first half and closed out the game 14-6. Scoring for the Bears were Amanda Wiseman (2), Annie Payne (2), Emma Roellig, and Emma Easton. Strong defense came from Sally Carlson and Cathrine Petersen. Despite the disappointing loss, the Bears finished their regular season at 15-6, their best record since 2007. The Bears would like to thank their Head Coach, Juliet Mittlemann, for helping them realize their potential as people and players. The team would also like to thank the loud and boisterous fans who showed up in record numbers at every game.
