Administration

Bear print Simone Rick-Kennel, New Principal at M-A - At its April 15 meeting the Board unanimously to appoint Simone Rick-Kennel for M-A. Simone has served as administrative vice principal of M-A since 2008 and as a special education teacher at M-A since 2002. Beginning in January 2015 Simone has also served as interim co-principal of M-A. The district utilized a process for the principal selection that involved the services of an outside search firm that elicited input from staff and community while actively recruiting candidates. It is a testament to the experiences and qualities that Simone will bring to a key leadership position that she emerged from the hiring process as the top candidate. Simone will assume the position officially on July 1, however, with major summer construction projects ramping up that will be taking up an increased amount of Matthew Zito's time, Simone will be assuming increased day to day leadership duties at M-A this Spring.

Simone began her education career in 1993 as a special education teacher in the South San Francisco Unified School District.  After coming to M-A in 2002 she became Dean of Students in 2007 and was named administrative vice principal in 2008. Since January she has served as interim co-principal due to the appointment of Matthew Zito as chief facilities officer.

The two interview committees involved in the selection process strongly felt that Simone was the best person to lead M-A as it addresses the challenges of enrollment growth, maintaining and further improving its strong academic program, and providing equitable opportunities for all students.

Please join me in congratulating Simone as she assumes the principalship of M-A.

Jim Lianides

Superintendent

Bear print Changes Coming to the Guidance Department in 2015-16 - In addition to M-A's current six guidance counselors, M-A will be fortunate enough to hire two additional guidance counselors due to our increasing enrollment over the next several years. Given that M-A will have eight counselors, the school will be reconfiguring the breakdown by alphabet for each counselor's caseload. By hiring two counselors now, we are hoping to avoid reconfiguring the alphabet again in a few years. This does mean there will be some guidance counselor changes for current M-A students, however, counselor caseloads will be smaller.

M-A will follow a strategic process to determine the breakdown based on how the numbers fall in relation to last name letters in the alphabet. If you have any input for this process, please contact Steve Lippi, Instructional Vice Principal, at slippi@seq.org or 650-322-5311 ,ext. 50112.

The current alpha breakdown is:

A, M, N, O                       Lara Sandora
B,C,D                              Karina Escobar
E, F, G-Go                        Silvia Torres Garza
Gr-Gz, H,I, J, K, L             Laura Duran
P,Q,R,S-Se                       Francine Andrade
Sh-Sz, T, U, V, W, XYZ       Jason Kubo

Bear print College and Career Advisor UpdateAlice Kleeman will be retiring after 20 years as M-A's esteemed College and Career Advisor. The process is underway to hire her replacement. The position has been posted to Edjoin, the top national education jobs website, so M-A can recruit the most qualified candidate to begin at the start of the 2015-16 school year. Alice will return to consult on a part-time basis, ensuring a smooth transition and continuation of quality college and career advising at M-A.

Bear print Girls Varsity LacrosseThe Bears had three dominating victories this week improving to 14-4 on the season. On Monday night M-A defeated Mountain View 21-1. The Bears' Grace Tully scored 3 of her 5 goals in the first half as the Bears rolled to a 13-0 halftime led. Annie Payne added 4 goals and 2 assists. The Spartans struggled to penetrate the M-A defense with seniors Morgan Corona and Hannah Wilson making defensive stops and winning ground balls. The Bears goalie, Allie Bayne, had five saves. Also scoring for the Bears were Emma Easton (3), Amanda Wiseman (3), Izzy Regonini (2), Sally Carlson, Lauren McGinnis, Cathrine Petersen, and Emma Roellig

On Wednesday the Bears hosted a rematch with Castilleja. The Gators jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Wiseman and Easton each scored 2 to tie the game at 4 with 7 minutes left in the first half. After a Castilleja time out, the Bears went on a 6-0 run and never looked back, winning 18-6. M-A was lead by Payne who scored 6. Wiseman scored 5 and added 3 assists. The Bears benefited from strong defense by Wilson, Corona, and Petersen who also had 2 assists. Also scoring for the Bears were Carlson (2), Easton (2), McGinnis, Tully and Roellig.

On Friday night, the Girls played under the lights at Burlingame. With a big game atmosphere thanks to a full TV production crew, the Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Burlingame was poised to push their lead further, but Gianna Prainito, Kelly Woods and Petersen made defensive stops setting up goals by Easton and Tully, tying the game. The Panthers scored but Petersen answered. After another Burlingame goal the Panthers were up 5-4 midway through the first half. Finally the Bears got their offense rolling and scored the next 9 goals seemingly putting the game out of reach. However, the Panthers refused to go away, going on a 6-2 run in the second half to close the gap to 14-10. The Bears scored the final 4 goals to put the game away 18-10. M-A was lead by Carlson, Regonini and Tully who each scored 4 goals. The Bears goalie Bayne had 7 saves. Also scoring for the Bears were Wiseman (3), Easton and Roellig.

This week the Bears finish their regular season. M-A hosts Archbishop Mitty at 4 p.m. on Monday, May 4 at M-A. On Friday at 7 p.m., M-A honors their seniors before taking on Menlo in a battle between the first and second place teams in WBAL.

Bear print Varsity BaseballComing off of a long spring break, the Bears were at home Wednesday against Capuchino, winning 7-0. Senior Matt McGarry had another great start on the mound going 6 shutout innings on 117 pitches. The overpowering right hander struck out 8 in route to his third league win. Left hander Kodiak Conrad came in to close the game out in the seventh, getting 2 strike outs of his own and giving up no runs. It was AJ Lemons day all the way around. The senior continued to swing a very hot bat with a 3-4 day (double, two singles) and also drove in 3 runs. If that was not enough, Lemons also made the defensive play of the day in the fourth inning by diving head long towards the infield and making a spectacular diving catch to save a run and preserve the shutout. Junior Matthew Johnston also continued to swing a hot bat with 2 more hits and an RBI. Max Gardiner matched this with 2 hits of his own. McGarry (long ground rule double to deep center), Bret Rodrigues (single and a run scored), Nick Prainito (single and a run scored) also contributed hits, and third baseman Nikolai Tarran reached base twice. In addition to Lemons defensive gem, the team was very solid on defense with outstanding play behind the plate by Daniel K-G, strong play up the middle by Prainito and Evan Easton, and many nice catches by sophomore center fielder Kennedy Ojeda.

The Bears traveled to Capuchino on Friday afternoon and suffered a tough loss, 3-7. Junior Nick Olson started on the hill and threw well going 4 innings. Olson had 3 strikeouts and battled through some tight spots. Lemons came in to throw the final 2 innings in relief and had great command of his pitches. On offense short stop Prainito had 2 doubles, third baseman Tarran had 2 singles and an RBI, and McGarry hit his eighth home run of the year, a 2-run shot in the top of the seventh inning. K-G added a big double, and Johnston had a single.

Bear print Varsity SoftballOn Tuesday, the Bears beat Jefferson 3-0 at home. Pitcher Emily Katz threw 7 shut out innings, allowing only 3 hits and 1 walk and recording 6 strike outs. She was supported by error free play from the Bears in the field, and the Indians had only 4 base runners, none of whom advanced past first base. Shortstop Delilah Kline was a key to the Bears' defensive play, with 2 great catches and 3 assists. Jess Burgos showed her defensive versatility by making plays at both third and second base, and Alice Coleman made a great catch in left field to keep the shut out alive. Kline was also a key offensive player, going 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI double. E. Katz went 3 for 4 with 2 singles and an RBI double, and Coleman hit an infield single to drive in the third run of the game. Other offensive contributors were Sarah Tiemann, with a double and a single, and Burgos and Molly Katz, each with singles. On Friday, the Bears' bats fell silent, and they lost to Mills High School. The Bears play their last 2 home games of the season on Tuesday, May 5 against Terra Nova, and on Thursday, May 7 against San Mateo.

Bear print Boys Varsity Lacrosse - On Tuesday, May 5 the Bears are hosting the National Foundation for Cancer Research game at M-A. M-A plays Menlo School (JV at 4:45 p.m. and Varsity at 7 p.m) at Coach Parks field. The team is fundraising via Play 4 the Cure 15. Come cheer on the M-A teams! Fees will be charged at the gate:
  • $5, Adults
  • $2, Students
  • Free, 5 and Under
T-shirts will be available for sale and the Snack Shack will be open.

Senior Night will be held on
Thursday, May 7 at 6:15 p.m., on Coach Parks field.  All M-A fans, families, friends, and fellow students, are invited to come out and support M-A's  senior players Miles Evans, Wes Fischer, Holden Kardos, Eric Levenson, Cole Shaffer, Max Sonderby, Will Tully, and Peyton Uphoff as the team acknowledges and celebrates their achievements in M-A lacrosse. Stay after the ceremony to cheer on the team as they play Woodside at 7 p.m.

Bear print Boys Varsity Volleyball - After going over the .500 mark, the Bears had 3 games this past week.  On Tuesday, they travelled to Mills, where the team won in straight sets. The offense was led by Edward Falefa (15 kills and 6 aces), Ryan Cole (6 kills), and Laki Fonua and Eddie Ives (5 kills each). The defense was led by Fonua (5 blocks) and Cole (3 blocks). Falefa had 6 digs, while Ives had 3.

On Thursday, the Bears hosted Aragon High School. The Bears had previously lost to them on their home court. Aragon was expecting the same outcome, but the Bears had other ideas. The Bears offense was led again by Falefa (20 kills), Cole (16) and Ives (7) , with Schuyler Knapp assisting on most (40 assists).  It was a team-wide effort on defense, led by Falefa with 20 digs, Knapp with 11, and Bryan Kang with 8. The defense was strong where the boys were not allowing anything to hit the floor. The play of the season happened when there was a scramble on defense to dig a ball, and a diving Ives was able to get a ball up into the air with the back of his heel, which eventually led to the Bears winning the point, and eventually the match in straight sets.

M-A travelled to San Jose on Friday to take on the Comets of James Lick. Once again the Bears were dominant. Great serving (Falefa, 6 aces, Cortney Weintz, 2 aces), and great team defense with contributions by Troy Sweetnam, Dylan Calderon, and Jose Guzman, allowed the team to win in straight sets and improve their record to 11-7. Knapp once again controlled the offense (27 assists), with Falefa leading the way (12 kills) and key contributions from Cole, Fonua, and Jack Hinshaw.

The Bears host their final game of the season on Tuesday, May 5 against University Prep Academy, at 6:30 p.m. in Ayers Gym. It is Senior Night for the team. Come out strong and loud to cheer on the team for the finale of their inaugural season!
