Through a partnership with Starvista, a local non-profit organization, M-A provides on-campus crisis intervention, prevention and counseling services that support students' social-emotional well-being. Additionally, the Student Support Center offers case management, brief intervention counseling, bilingual parent support and referrals to off-site agencies.

Guidance Counselors are also a primary source of student support and can assist students and families with referrals to any of these services. All of these services are available to students on a daily basis, and parents are encouraged to contact us with any questions. During non-school hours, Starvista's Child and Adolescent Hotline and Prevention Program (CAHPP) may be reached at 650-567-5437 (habla español).

The Mask You Live In, a new documentary film premiering at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, asks the important question:  Is American masculinity harming our boys, young men, and society at large? Compared to girls, research shows that boys in the United States are more likely to be diagnosed with a behavior disorder, prescribed stimulant medications (for ADD/ADHD), fail out of school, binge drink, commit a violent crime, and/or take their own lives.

This event is sponsored by the WHS PTSA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. Simultaneous Spanish translation will be available.

Bear print Badminton - Last week the Bears defeated Hillsdale, 10-5. Boys #1 singles (Terrance Woo), Girls #1 singles (Gray Perrone), Boys #1 doubles (Arash Afsarifard/Matthew Vollrath), Girls #1 doubles (Ashley Utz/Misato Muraoka), and Mixed #1 doubles (Erin Sanchez/Trenton Hall) all won their matches. On Thursday the Bears defeated Jefferson, 9-6.
Girls #1 singles (Perrone), Boys #1 doubles (Afsarifard/Vollrath), and Girls #1 doubles (Muraoka/Utz) all won their matches.

Bear print Varsity SoftballThe Bears had a tough week, losing 2 tight games in the top of the seventh. On Tuesday, M-A faced the St. Francis Sharks from Watsonville. Although the Bears had a slow offensive game, they scored 4 runs in the fourth inning, and the game stayed tied until the top of the seventh, when the Sharks scored twice. The Bears were unable to answer, and fell to the Sharks 4-6. Only 2 Bears had hits in the game,  Sarah Tiemann had a single and a double, and Brianna Martinez had a single. Defensively, the Bears played well. Pitcher Emily Katz had 7 strikeouts and there were only 2 errors, but ultimately the Bears fell to the speedy, aggressive base running of the visiting team. On Thursday, the Bears fell to South San Francisco in the first league game of the season. Again, the Bears' bats were quiet, with only 3 players getting hits, Tiemann had a double and a single, E. Katz had 2 singles, and Martinez had a single. The lone M-A run was scored in the bottom of the first inning, when Tiemann scored on a sacrifice fly by E. Katz. After 6 innings, the score was 2-1 in favor of South San Francisco, but the Warriors broke it open in the top of the seventh, plating 6 runs to bring the final score to 8-1. League play continues next week, with a home game against El Camino on Tuesday, March 24 and an away game against Jefferson on Friday, March 27. On Wednesday, March 25 the Bears face Pinewood at home in a non-league game.

Bear print Varsity BaseballThe Bears played 3 games this week. The first game was at home against Sacred Heart. The game was an epic battle that was eventually called due to darkness after 6 innings with a score of 16-14 in favor of Sacred Heart. But the game was played under protest after the umpire called a M-A batter out at the plate on a warm up swing that came in contact with the catcher while the game was not in progress. At the time M-A was ahead 10-9 in the bottom of the fourth inning. The team awaits a ruling from the league to determine the official outcome.

Matt McGarry was the starting pitcher and faced a tough strike zone and good hitters. AJ Lemons came in to relieve in the second inning and faced the same challenges but managed to get an 11 pitch inning in the third with a strikeout and some great catches on fly balls to Nick Prainito and Max Gardiner. The Bears ended up going through 5 pitchers, using Nick Olson, Ryan Klapper, and Cam Malloy in an attempt to battle the tough calls at the plate. Pranito had a great day at the plate with 2 doubles and 4 RBI's. Brian Coggins also had a long ball to the fence in right field for a double that brought in 2 runs for the Bears.

The second game was a rematch at Sacred Heart and M-A lost 6-3. Kodiak Conrad got the start and lasted 5 innings on 100 pitches. He had 3 earned runs, 3 strikeouts and 3 walks. Olson came in to close and had 1 earned run, 1 strikeout, and 1 walk. The Bears managed only 4 hits against a tough left handed pitcher from Sacred Heart. The credit for the singles goes to: Evan Easton, Matt Johnston, McGarry, and Nikolai Tarran

The third game of the week was a tough non-league game with the seniors missing the game due to the M-A fashion show. Coach Amoroso called up a couple of JV players, Hunter Sevy and Miles Conrad who managed to get on base twice, once with a line drive down the left field line and then a great sacrifice bunt. Junior Klapper got the start and went 8 innings allowing only 3 walks, 6 strikeouts on 7 hits. Sevy came in to close the game and got 3 quick outs on 4 batters. The Bears had offensive efforts from some new faces in this game, Kevin Shimbo and Mitch Eisenstat in addition to Conrad and singles by Prainito, Olson, Bret Rodrigues and Johnston.

Bear print Boys Varsity TennisM-A won its two league matches last week to run its PAL Bay record to 5-0. The Bears traveled to Burlingame and San Mateo and won by identical 7-0 scores, not dropping a set in either match. Recording wins were Reed Fratt, Axel Brenner, Jeffrey Jorgensen, Camillo Saueressig, Tyler Ellingson, Alex Iyer, Danny LaPorte, Zach Novak, Noah Milman, Nishant Relan, Eric Laderman, Jack Jensen, and Oscar VolpeThis week, the Bears have 4 consecutive matches. Also scoring for the Bears were Emma Easton (3), Grace Tully (3), Annie Payne (2), Lauren McGinnis, and Emma Roellig.

The Bears notched their third consecutive blow-out victory with a 20-3 win over Christian Brothers, Sacramento. M-A's offensive firepower was on display as 8 Bears scored 20 goals, 9 of which were assisted. Wiseman was the top scorer again with 5 goals and 2 assists. Payne added 4 and Carlson had 3 goals and 3 assists. Morgan Corona and Wilson combined for 7 defensive takeaways. The Bears were up 10-0 before the Falcons scored late in the first half. Also scoring for the Bears were Tully (3), Easton (2), McGinnis, Izzy Regoniniand Roellig.

This week the Bears face greater challenges as they open league play against the perennial champions. On Tuesday, March 24 at 4 p.m. they travel to Menlo and on Thursday, March 26 they visit Sacred Heart for a 4 p.m. game.

Bear print Boys Varsity Volleyball - M-A played a hard fought match last week against visiting Wilcox. The Bears ended up losing the match 1-3, when they finally succumbed to Wilcox in the fourth set 27-29! Despite the loss, it was a brilliant team effort for the night. The Bears had their first taste of victory as they narrowly missed shutting out San Mateo with a set count of 3-1 last week. M-A came from behind in the second set but ended up losing the set 26 -28. The Bears kept up their momentum, however, and dominated the third and fourth sets, taking the lead early and never letting up. Junior Edward Falefa led the team in kills (36) and aces (9), with additional kills, blocks, aces, and digs from seniors Laki Fonua and Ryan Cole, sophomores Eddie Ives and Bryan Kang, and freshmen Cortney Weintz, Troy Sweetnamand Schuyler Knapp. Knapp contributed to the team's success with 46 assists.
